Serena Williams weighs in on Caroline Wozniacki ‘impression’ of her

Excerpt:“I know Caro and I would call her my friend,” she wrote in an email to USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/tennis/2012/12/19/serena-williams-caroline-wonziacki-impression-not-racist/1780467/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+UsatodayTennis-TopStories+%28Sports+-+Tennis+-+Top+Stories%29). “And I don’t think she (meant) anything racist by it.”

Still, Williams acknowledged that it might be time for Wozniacki to retire the homage to her physique.

“I must add,” she wrote. “If people feel this way, she should take reason and do something different next time.”

Very diplomatic from Serena - post-USOballshovinggate, and her brush with serious illness, Serena has really grown up. I always found her irritating and entitled when she was young, but credit where it's due, she really has matured a lot in recent years.

But the stupid non-issue needs to go away. There is so much real and destructive discrimination going on in the world on the basis of race, gender, sexuality, religion, etc - that it makes me insanely angry when people waste time, energy and effort in trying to paint a stupid joke as some sort of racist statement that it clearly was never meant to be. Talk about diluting a message... people need to stop desperately searching for perceived insults where none were intended and instead tackle the real discrimination that thrives even in "tolerant" countries. *gets down off soapbox* (Sorry, this whole thing just pisses me off.)

Serena will just channel any hurt caused (which I don't think there was although it does make you think) into a passive-aggressive lashing on the court. It only makes their match up that much more interesting for 2013. I do like the fact she asked, why noone spilt the stormy tea when other people did it in the past?

This is only because she's going unchallenged at the moment methinks, if she starts getting challenged again I think we'll see her old self come out pretty quickly.

Hater, hater...it's that what you guys are hoping for, huh?! Well, since in her 15 years, she only had two chapters..I think those implosions were the norm.

Heck even Wozniacki herself has more run ins with umpires than Serena. ( saying umpire lacked education, her run-ins with Kader Nouni, etc..)

Fair enough. A very mature reaction from Serena. :worship:

This was a really tricky situation for her. Some of her friends (Caro, Roddick) did the impersonation that is considered to be racist inside her own community. You must be really careful with these statements, because you don't want to hurt anyone. Every word can be misinterpreted.

The odd thing is. As soon as she did her "impression"....Maria began to play exactly the way she's been playing against Serena this past while back

 Exactly right. It's pretty easy to seem diplomatic and mature in the presence of advisors, agents etc...

Oh yeah there you have like 20.

Everyone has had discussions with umpires, they don't compare with Serena's or Azarenka's encounters though.

This story went over the top. There was no racism involved and it was rather funny. It isn't like Serena is God and no one can touch her.

Let's hope that Serena's comments about Woz won't be called "racist" by some TF posters , because i remember how i and some other sensible posters were writing the same comments as Serena did and were called racists ))))

In that case opening this thread is justified (cause OP's not supposed to know which thread has been "wiped off the map" on the orders of whoever.

I think it has been deleted, yes. Search for "Serena Responds To Caroline Wozniacki's Impersonation" on the TF main page and you will find some links but when you click on them a message will show that "you do not have permission to access this page".

I have no idea why all those threads are being deleted tbh. Even threads about tennis players and doping only get closed. Would be nice if a mod could explain that before deleting this one as well.

Anyway, hopefully we can stop having to hear about this situation now. It's over. I wonder how many times they'll bring it up during the AO.

This subject got shut down from TF like I've never seen before. While it was being discuss EVERYWHERE, threads kept getting deleted here one after another.

I guess we will never know the reason behind it.
