Your list is pure bullshit: http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=Yanina%20Wickmayer%2C%20angelique%20kerb er&date=1%2F2012%2012m&cmpt=q

Additionally, players who have to endure "WTA spelling" lose pretty much all the traffic they generate from their home country if you just check for the WTA spelling, e.g. Görges vs. Goerges (http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=julia%20g%C3%B6rges%2C%20julia%20goerges&date=1%2F2012%2012m&cmpt=q) or Kvitová vs. Kvitova (http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=Petra%20Kvitov%C3%A1%2C%20Petra%20Kvitov a&date=1%2F2012%2012m&cmpt=q).

Impressive to have so many tennis players on the list.

.
You editorial comments give life to the list.
I wished you had added the same for Li Na and Ana Ivanovic

Tennis benefits by being the only international individual women sports with 4 marquis events every year.
People are "forced" to be proud of their country woman; explaining why you the likes of Yanina Wickmayer, Petko, Dominica C. etc...are on the list.

I am not surprised by high position of Sania Mirza given the enormous population behind her.
I am surprised by low position of Li Na, again - given the enormous population behind her.
I interpret it that Mirza might be the only world known Indian athlete (well, relatively known compared to other Indian athletes), so no wonder she has such a high status in India.
As to Li Na, China has enough athletes to care about, so Li Na must compete against a quite large internal market for an attention.

And I am totally surprised by Ivanovic on the list. She is a celebrity of the distant past, but somehow the population got it engraved in their minds that Ana is a "hot tennis chick", and somehow that sticks longer than it should.

I think Ana is popular for the same reason Sania Mirza is: they are both extremely easy on the eyes( although lately, in Ana's case, that could be debatable) in their respective base of support.

Not really, because a Chinese person who wants to read what the world thinks of his/her heroine will not type "李娜", but simply "Li Na".

This makes no sense. Most Chinese people read Chinese-language media, just like most Brits read English-language media. Just because I'm a fan of Dementieva does not mean I'm going to google her in Cyrillic script.

This is the only thing that matters in the slightest. Whether or not you trust the authority of the precise rankings in this particular list, it surely indicates that women's tennis is hugely popular right now, and that can only be a good thing.

At the individual level, being more popular than your rivals is not going to win you a single point on a tennis court, much less a match or a title. These are the only things that matter. Popularity that isn't backed up by success is only so much hot air.

Well, I guess Chinese mainlanders wouldn't google for 李娜 either, they'd probably baidu for 李娜. It's not like there are many Chinese (except for those on Formosa and Hong Kong) who use google in the first place.

Since the Chinese are close to 50% of the world's internet users and google does not operate in China (you get redirected to Hong Kong google), using Google as any measure of "global popularity" is pointless.

Eh, I'm not even sure it actually shows that. For some reason you get a large number of results if you type "Yanina Wickmayer" into Google and that's purely what this list shows. They've just used a really misleading title for their article, since to me, and pretty much everyone else, 'googled' usually implies 'searched' but not in this case.

Not sure I get your point tbh. "Yanina Wickmayer" gets less than half the results that "Jelena Jankovic" gets, and about 1/15th of the hits that Venus gets, the players just above and below her in the rankings. Of course these are former #1s and huge stars, but if you look a bit higher and lower in the rankings, only "Varvara Lepchenko" gets fewer hits than Wickmayer.

But even if, as is undoubtedly true, the precise ranking is determined by other things besides popularity (alphabet issues, regional differences in google use), I would expect number of hits to be a pretty good indicator for number of searches, simply because supply generally caters to demand.

The fact that there is a lot of online content catering to interest in women's tennis seems to me to be a pretty good indication that there is actually a lot of interest in women's tennis.

That makes even less sense, as Google does not show a results number when you google for a specific time frame, and it is very very unlikely that Wickmayer returns more results from the last year than Kerber. The list is just bogus. Some stupid blog making stuff up to generate clicks.

So then the list is clearly just totally wrong since they ranked them by number of search results and Halep and Wickmayer are supposedly in the top 50 and Jankovic isn't. It's a totally meaningless list.

You may be right, tbh I couldn't be bothered to check it any further.

My point wasn't to defend the list anyway, but to point out that being popular doesn't mean shit if it's not backed up by results.

If you like to vote various Athlete of the Year polls, I found this site: http://ussa.edu/ballots/athlete-of-the-year/#

The 12 female nominees for the Athlete of the Year are: Victoria Azarenka (tennis), Jessica Korda (golf), Yani Tseng (golf), Caroline Costner (figure skating), Carmelita Jeter (track & field), Missy Franklin (swimming), Serena Williams (tennis), Gabby Douglas (gymnatics), Allison Felix (track & field), Tamika Cathings (basketball), Jessica Ennis (track and field) and Lindsey Vonn (skiing).

The 12 male nominees for the Athlete of the Year are: Novak Djokovic (tennis), LeBron James (basketball), Lionel Messi (soccer), Rory McIlroy (golf), Miguel Cabrera (baseball), Ashton Eaton (track & field), Bradley Wiggins (cycling), Usain Bolt (track & field), Andy Murray (tennis), J.R. Cellski (speedskating), Michael Phelps (swimming) and Drew Brees (American football).

Those nominees are selected by the United States Sports Academy which probably explains why certain American athletes are on the list, but that is not a main point of this story. I think it is a good thing for tennis that there are 4 tennis players on the list comparing to other major sports including team sports like soccer and basketball.

Supposedly, Kazakh volleyballer Sabina Altynbekova has rocketed up the rankings of fb and Instagram followers, etc. (The "too pretty to play" article & vid about her seems like an obvious publicity stunt).

Nice looking, tall & athletic; now can the Kazakh TF teach her how to play tennis? Hell, she might beat everyone there except Shvedy & Diyas within a year.
