????? :help:

BANGKOK -- Serena Williams has had surgery on her big toes and withdrew from an exhibition match against top-ranked Victoria Azarenka in Thailand this month.

A medical certificate from Florida podiatrist Jeffrey Rockefeller says Williams "was treated for a chronic foot disorder which involved minor procedures on both of her great toes."

He said she needs to minimize activity to fully recover.

Williams, the WTA player of the year after winning Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and London Olympics, was replaced by Li Na for the exhibition on Dec. 29 in Hua Hin.

It's probably just an ingrown toenail or something.

She should be crossed off the Brisbane EL as well.
Hopefully, it is something really minor and does not affect her. Anyway, even with dire footwork Renochka can get to the semis & final and then when she sees the blond wigs on the other side of the net she will find it in herself to snatch them. It is known.

This. It's not like there are that many 'minor surgeries' you can do on your big toe. I had surgery for my ingrown toenails a few years ago, and provided that the wound doesn't get infected she should be moving just fine in about 2 weeks' time.

Not surprising that she should get them either. Athletes with frequent trauma to the nail tend to suffer more ingrown toenails.

 Some of you here are damn funny without being hateful, I love that!
I think Serena did go thru a minor procedure back on the 13th of Dec. & wanted to minimize the risk of aggravation ...& also she prolly wanted to spend more time with Patrick post-training & prior to Brisbane instead of traveling to Thailand

Where did you get/hear this date? She was in Abu Dhabi then. She's hardly been in Florida at all this entire offseason (Paris post-YEC, then to Canada, then to the Bahamas, then back and forth a bit for 2 weeks between Florida and Los Angeles, then off to Brazil, then Abu Dhabi, then Mauritius...) so I'm thinking that this is something that must have happened at least 2 weeks ago.

Wow you're excellent at tracking her movement, haven't been following except for the TO exho which I attended. But I think this is minor procedure as some1 alluded to, otherwise she would be in a cast & not training. From Twitter, some1 posted this Dr's note today....dunno whether its authentic or not ;)

She likely had this planned for a while. It does make sense that she wants to take the holidays to relax and then get back to training for Australia during the 2nd week in January. Probably won't be winning that title in Brisbane though...which could only mean she will be even more hungry in Melbourne.

I'M guessing it's not too serious...I'm sure she'll be ready for Australia or else she wouldn't have waited so long during the off season to have that surgery since it's a chronic injury. Sometimes I wonder if she doesn't go in surgery simply to get more motivated to win tournaments lol

Healing time, rehabilitation time, court time(from Serena team) needed to get into match form.

Well I expect this went something like this:

Agent: One million dollars you play Thailand exho.
Serena: Sure.

Two weeks later...

Agent: Booked your flight to Thailand for Dec. 26th
Serena: WTF am I doing in Thailand on Christmas.
Agent: Play that exho.

Agent: Party? You play Brisbane on New Year.

lol Alright I shouldn't say Serena fans you're right, I should say most Serena fans who posted on this thread. To me a shoulder tweak is much more serious than a MINOR surgery to your BIG TOE. It's not a surgery to her foot, only to a toe. Shoulder tweak can turn to be way worse and any surgery in a shoulder can be way more complicated than the one to a big toe. I just don't see the big fuss about it, Serena went through worse surgeries and she and her team knows what to expect now and if there would be ANY concerns they wouldn't appear so confident about Australia. That's what I'm saying, all those people dramatizing about that surgery just sound like they don't have much confidence in Serena's abilities which is kinda weird knowing Serena's past and record with post injury return.

it says "minimize activity" as a recommendation for full recovery. It's basically saying, live your life as usual but just don't push it. For Serena it would prevent her from obviously playing tennis for a couple weeks, running, dancing, booty popping but beside that she does as she please. To me that's not a really concerning recommendation and he said himself that it was a MINOR surgery.

It sounds like it's no big deal.

Be realistic, you are not thinking.

Today is December 19, 2012. Aussie Open start January 14, 2013.

That is not lot of time to heal, rehabilitate the 2 toes and get into match form.

Tennis is not a team sport where teammates can cover for someone who is not 100%, or the player can only see limited play time because s/he isn't 100%.

You're assuming Serena has to play her best to get to the QF of this tournament. If she isn't all the way rehabbed she will have to work hard through the first few rounds but if she makes it to the 2nd week...well it is an odd year...

You're assuming Serena has to play her best to get to the QF of this tournament. If she isn't all the way rehabbed she will have to work hard through the first few rounds but if she makes it to the 2nd week...well it is an odd year...
I think she is getting older now, it will become increasingly diffictult to use early rounds as warmups.

Also, as a fan, it is less nerve wrecking to see Serena have an easier time, and not struggle so much in the first week.

Totally agree. I want her to win another slam without dropping a set just adds to her total in the "dominance" conversation. I do think watching her come back from the brink has almost become a tradition in Australia sooo here's to hoping she's in the final!

LOL I believe that Serena will have as much trouble post surgery as the world will end on friday. Seeing how cocky some of Serena fans are I'd believe that a minor toe surgery isn't something that you'd think twice. That's what I'm saying, if you're doubting Serena's abilities that's not my problem but I find it really odd.

Stop generalizing. Anyway, can you blame us, considering the past issues with her feet? It's a legitimate concern. Unlike an insignificant shoulder tweak or something..

Really? :o

I am not doubting her abilities, I have concerns with so little time left for preparation.
It is one thing to not be 100% match ready in early rounds, it is another to add "recovering, healing toes" to the equation.

Even with all the countless comeback in her history, we were still concerned and anxious but confident ( the right word, cocky is the wrong word) in each one of them.

Anyways this is clearly minor. If it was going to take a long time to heal she would have had the surgery straight after Istanbul.

Alright so now you're going to paranoid each time she has a minor thing going on? BTW I thought the cuts was all over her foot not only (if any) on her big toe. Unlike some of her own fans, I believe her doctor, her team and herself when they say it's a MINOR surgery. The fact that you detailed her dental work makes it even funnier, having gum work is a bit painful but this is not making it any more serious lol, it's still a simple dental work. You either don't know what you're talking about or you're seriously trying to make it sound dramatic.

I'm a Serena fan too. She's cryptic about her injuries, but, like I said, her agent's comments and the timing of the surgery have me thinking this is minor. I'm obviously no doctor, but there doesn't seem to be anything to get your panties in a bunch over.

i simply corrected a poster  what's your point there??

as i said, if it's minor it's minor and we'll be happy and as a fan we worry when she needs work done on something she's had MAJOR surgery on before - she had a drooping toe hence some serena fans will be genuinely worried...you're the one who NEEEEDS to be right here so carry on over a player you have no interest in but to point out she's gonna be at a party soon

Dec 19th, 2012, 10:29 PM
lol Alright I shouldn't say Serena fans you're right, I should say most Serena fans who posted on this thread.

You don't have to use the word dramatic, the other action and descriptive words you used are enough to merit the characterization of dramatic.
You are predicting that in less than a week time, she'll be wearing high heels, dancing, etc.... For me and any objective observers, it is dramatic for someone who just had surgery on both big toes.

I can't imagine the amount pressure just wearing high heels would put on those toes, but with dancing to boot????

Ok, listen if YOU think that this surgery is a big deal and terrible, yes of course partying and standing up will be a big deal. BUT if you take out of the equation that it's a big deal and you keep it as a MINOR surgery as it is stated by the doctor himself and her team, it is way less of a big deal. It's only DRAMATIC cuz you think it's gonna be a big thing. Have you ever had any kind of surgery? Personally I don't think that seeing her at a party in 2 weeks would be dramatic at all

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) -- Brisbane International organizers say Serena Williams still plans to compete in the Dec. 30-Jan. 5 event despite minor surgery on her big toes that forced her to withdraw from a Dec. 29 exhibition in Thailand.

Brisbane tournament director Cameron Pearson said Thursday he had been assured by Williams' agent that the WTA player of the year will ''be fit and ready'' for the event at the Queensland Tennis Centre.

Williams has been affected by chronic foot problems since treading on glass and badly cutting both feet in 2010.

The five-time Australian Open winner played at last year's Brisbane International but pulled out because of an ankle injury at the quarterfinals. Later in the year, she won Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the women's singles title in the London Olympics.
