View Full Version : Where Would a Second Serena Slam Place Serena on the All Time List???

I <3 Serena
Dec 18th, 2012, 06:14 PM
If Serena were to win the Australian Open and French Open in 2013 that would give her a total of 17 Grand slams and the only women in the History of Tennis to hold all four grand slams at once TWICE!! Where would this place Serena on the All Time Greatest list?

1. Greatest Of All Time, No woman has ever held all 4 grand slams simultaneously TWICE in their career?

2. #2 on the All Time Greatest list right behind Graf but firmly ahead of Nav and Evert?

3. Tied with Nav and Evert because their Slam total is still greater than Serena's, and holding 4 grand slams simultaneously TWICE in her career isn't that great?

4. Still in 4th place behind the respected Graf, Nav and Chris Evert?

I personally would go with #2 on the All Time greatest List. Just slightly behind Graf. Opinions Opinions!! First time posting on this site but have been a member for many years!!

If she had a calendar year slam, meaning winning 6 straight slams then she will go down as the greatest

Lets just hope she stays healthy :cheer:

Graf won AO, FO, WB, US 88 + FO, WB, US 93 and AO 94 and came close to do it again in 1996 (had she played the Australian Open) and in 1997 (when she lost to Coetzer in the AO quarters)

I do agree that It is too soon to assume that Serena will win the French. But if she continues her present form and wins the Aussie open(which I believe she will) then this questions becomes very relevant. A second Serena slam a decade apart from each other is a Feat I don't think will ever be duplicated. That alone should easily place her above Nav and Evert and slightly behind Graf.

OK I was a little quick when claiming that Serena would be the only woman to hold all 4 grand slam titles simultaneously TWICE!! But it is still an accomplishment that would rarely be duplicated and you cant ignore the fact that if successful both Serena Slams would span 10 Years apart. That's Banana's!! Once again that's an error on my part with claiming that Serena would be the only woman to hold all 4 grand slam titles simultaneously TWICE!! But lets not get away from the fact that the longevity of Serena's superior play puts her in a League of her own. I AM NOT SAYING THAT SHE IS GREATER THAN GRAF. She has plenty of time to prove that. But this feat alone places her in 2nd SLIGHTLY behind Graf!

1. You can't compare one Slam in the past with one Slam in the current time. Different eras, different competition, etc. A player doesn't have to win 10 Slams now to be equaled with 10 Slams that were won in the old days.

2. This discussion is pointless since Serena is nowhere near to achieve that feat. It's silly to arguing about something that hasn't happened yet. When Capriati won the 2 first Slams in 2001, there were talks about the promise of her winning the Calendar Slam. Yet the 3rd Slam never came, let alone 4 Slams on a row.

Dec 18th, 2012, 08:23 PM
Behind only Graf - Graf is the only tennis player to win the Golden Slam in one year and would have 5 more Slams at that point than S Williams but if S Williams win all Slams in 2013, I may change my opinion.

Seems too much to expect this in the upcoming year, because, if she wins AO, the fourth slam would be RG, and that has been the most difficult for her. She would be under so much self-induced and media-emphasized pressure. Maybe if she loses AO, it would motivate her to win RG, Wimbledon, USO, and then AO. :D Less pressure to win the fourth since it begins a new season after a break.

In any case, she would just be adding to her haul of slams. She is already a great of tennis.

Serena already IS 'the greatest player of all time', if what you mean by that is have everybody play H2H, with the equipment of their choice.

If what you mean by 'greatest' is 'most dominant over longest period of time', Margaret Court is the 'greatest'.

If you go by, 'sure she was mentally fragile, but if she hadn't been stabbed'

'If her younger sister wasn't so damn good' ....

'If people had any sense of history .....'

There's a list of pillars of the sport. People you can't even discuss women's tennis rationally without mentioning.

Suzanne Lenglen
Helen Wills Moody
Margaret Court Smith
Billie Jean King
Chris Evert
Martina Navratilova
Steffi Graf
Serena Wiiliams

Given the differences in training, equipment, travel, compensation and sexism, order is kind of not important. Serena is on 'The List'.

she needs 25GS titles to be cleary NO1 in all time
and 20GS titels + 2times Serena slam still not enough. (can't avoid arguements)

I mean easiest way to be all time NO1 is get over all the records like Federer did
and then Serena would be Queen of tennis. :hearts:

I do agree that Talent wise Serena Williams is the GREATEST player to ever grace the WTA. Graf was dominated on multiple occasions early in her career by Evert and Nav and before the stabbing by Monica as well. Serena jumped out the gates her second year on tour and barring injury has never turned back. I still give graf The slight edge because of her singles slam count, but Ms. Williams is vastly approaching that #1 spot if she can continue her next generation form.

I would consider her the greatest ever if she reaches 20 slams including a 2nd French. A 2nd Serena Slam would place her 2nd behind Graf for me, but she would be well on her way already, as that would mean she has only another 3 slams to go, and another French is no longer needed.

That's the right attitude to have. Everytime a player wins one some of their fans are already looking forward to the next one. You have to treasure these things. Another Serena slam or even a calender year grand slam? Not impossible, but some talk about it as though it's the most natural thing in the world and it isn't. Those things happen so rarely that they are virtually a miracle. Each slam or Olympic gold or YEC victory is a magnificent achievement in itself and should be treated as such.

To me Serena's career is like a chapter out of a fantastical fairytale.
One that I was fortunate enough to be alive to experience.
Greatness at this level is not an everyday occurrence,
so I relish each and every moment that she graces the court with her incredible passion to win.
Regardless of how many more slam titles she wins beyond this point, or in whatever order, doesn't matter in the slightest.

Moreover, despite every adversity faced, she worked her butt off to not only overcome them, but attain the highest achievements possible. And now, having nothing further to prove, she still finds the motivation, drive, and perseverance, to stay on top and even dominate.
There is no current female athlete today, IMHO, that even comes close to her overall accomplishments and current athletic/professional status and ability.
And the fact that she sometimes makes wins look so easy says more than any expert analyst possibly could about her game vs previous greats...past, present, or future.
:hatoff: to Serena, and may her 2013 season be just as magnificent as the second half of 2012. :worship:

No I literally meant GO (play for after winning two straight) for a third slam in a row. I'm assuming a player has done that besides Serena. I know winning three slams in a row isn't easy. But has anyone besides her recently won 2 in a row with a chance at 3 besides her?

Kim would have competed for 3 in a row at the 2011 French Open had she played(won 2010 USO + 2011 AO) Before that it was Serena aiming for the 2009 French Open after winning 08 USO + 09 AO, and before that I'm thinking it was Justine going for the 2004 French Open after winning 03 USO + 04 AO. Well, in 2006 Justine made it to all four finals (with one of those translating into a singles title: French open).
Don't know of anyone else, since, making it to four finals in a roll, or even three for that matter.
Proof that even reaching a slam Final is extremely difficult.

Her career spans several generations (3, at my count) easily.
Now some may take the perspective that it's only one generation---'Serena's Generation'.
So I suppose that it can easily depends on your own personal perspective.

Fact is, Serena has been playing high level for 17 years... this past September 24th.
That's incredible!
