Although she played better in many other matches including her 2009 clay matches and that that 2006 dismantling of peak sharapova

The record against Henin is an issue :sobbing:

Prime Kuznetsova was a beasts. Completely abundant with weaponry. One of the few players who has nearly every shot in the book.

Kind of tragic to see her now.

She's also 3-7 against Ivanovic.

Not denying she's talented though and wish her all the best for '13 :D.

- Both are Russians.
- Both have great personalities.
- Both won 2 slams.
- Both waited 5 years to win their 2nd slam.
- Both had every shot in the book.
- Both were BEASTS when on.
- Both underachieved.

I loved her matches against Serena because it was a challenge and Serena usually came out on top at the end. ;) Sveta is to inconsistent to be labeled a God of any sort, she reminds me of Mauresmo in that regard who possessed every shot in the book but could never maintain top caliber play and dominance from match to match. The top 3 can bring their best when it's needed during matches. This is something that Sveta could never do.

I never understand this reasoning. Kuznetsova was 5-3 up in the second AFTER the roof was closed. Serena saved herself.

Yeah, Sveta was amazing. Easily the most talented russian player ever. She could do anything on the court. What makes Sharapova the best russian player of all time is her killer instinct, competitiveness and superhuman will to win, qualities Sveta never had. A waste of talent really.

I enjoy watching Kuznetsova play more than Sharapova but Sharapova at her best is more devastating. Sharapova at her best beats Serena 6-4, 6-1 in a slam final and Henin 6-4, 6-0 in a slam quarterfinal. Would even Godnetsova be capable of that?

I love me some Kuzzie, but when it's peaks we are talking about, Maria Yuryevna Sharapova doesn't have equals...a 6'2 power player just dismissing any opponent with crazy angles and non-stop barrage of heavy groundies.:p

All I see is a sub-par Serena absolutely decimating that sad excuse of a "GODnetsova" serve.

*gets on the bandwagon hoping for a return to form for Sveta*

I think people hit the nail on the head with the Safin comparison (not in game really, but in ability versus application)... like Marat, Svetlana has had all the weapons and physical prowess to be genuinely great and doesn't have any big weakness for an opponent to abuse... but she hasn't driven herself like a champion in any consistent fashion because she doesn't truly have the mentality for it. I don't mean that in an accusatory sense either, I think both Kuz and Safin have similar "intense but distracted/oddball" personalities and mentally neither of them is ever going to be driven in the single-minded manner of say... Serena or Federer, who are almost super-human in the strength of their focus/self-belief.

Of course, that gets into a very esoteric argument about how much of your personality/behaviour is consciously controllable in the long term and how much is just "the way you are"... but I am way too tired to go there :p At any rate, Sveta please return to the building, we need you!

One of the greatest wastes of talent on the WTA.

If she were a bit taller with a 110mph serve and achieved to her potential she'd be a multiple (4-5 time) slam winner by now.

Dec 15th, 2012, 02:13 AM
Going by the Kuznetsova/Safin comparisons... Safin made a Slam semifinal 3 and a half years after he won his 2nd Slam... it'll be roughly 3 and a half years since Kuz won RG in January 2013...

People forget, that coupled with Safin's notorious inconsistency, he was plagued by TWO near-career threatening injuries in '03 and '05 that derailed him for months. In hindsight his wrist injury in '05 basically marked his decline.

Kuznetsova's injury has obviously been the reason for her inactivity this past 6 months, but she's been in lousy shape for the last few seasons now, and her game has just been one big shit tip. I don't understand why people think her return to Slam-winning tennis is imminent.
