Wow wasn't expecting this. It's a bit unfair to Vika that she wasn't recognized for her great season when Wozniacki and Jankovic won this award with 0 slams. Playing Fed Cup, winning Olympics and YEC must have been the tie-breakers for Serena because history tells us that slams don't matter to ITF :tape:

Congrats to Serena! Very well deserved. An absolutely amazing year! Much respect. She's the cream of the crop, the best of the best. Hope she continues to excel even more in 2013. :yeah: :worship:

I don't think in this context it is fair to compare Vika's season to Caro's or to Jelena's. There was a more accomplished tennis player in 2012 and she won the ITF award. Let's hope Vika can build on the year she had and continue to improve and impress in 2013.

Well deserved.

How can you award this to Azarenka when she lost to Serena 5 times in a row this year?

Three of the five were ITF events, of the three two were Grand Slams and the other being Olympics.

On top of that, Azarenka lost to Serena on all surfaces possible.

Clay - Madrid
Hard - US Open
Grass - Wimbledon/Olympics
Indoor Hard - Istanbul

There was a more accomplished player in 2008 too: Serena. Clijsters was also more accomplished than Caro in 2010 but part-time schedule cost her this award. Venus lost it to Hingis with 2 slams+Olympic gold in 2000. These are all slamless winners you see. Vika won a slam and had an amazing streak at the start of the season. As I said in the other thread, do I think her year was better than Serena's? No but she deserved some kind of recognition. ATP automatically gives its player of the year award to the year-end no.1. WTA should do the same. (Is there a WTA award for the year-end no.1?) Then the ITF could give theirs to the player with more slam success and there would be no problem.

I thought they'd give this award to Vika.
Serena won 3 ITF main tournaments(of 5), it won't be fair to give it to anyone not named Serena in 2012, and it's not like Serena was successful only at Slams , she won as much titles as Vika including PM , YEC and 2 Premiers

So did Venus in 2000 but they gave it to Hingis who skipped the Olympics :tape:

And to TF anything other than a slam is a glorified exho.

But anyway - Serena won four of the six biggest events of the year and in succession at that. Nobody came anywhere close to doing something like that in the years that Jankovic and Woz won the award.

NID deservedly so :bounce: Serena was unstoppable in the second half of 2012, winning Wimbledon singles and doubles gold at the Olympics and the U.S. Open & YEC12.....breaking & tying a zillion records along the way including some of her own and some of Graf's.

The Olympics stood out!According to tennis pundits it was the best performance by a singles player since 1929, Serena totally destroyed a very strong field which included former & current #1s :worship:

Btw the ITF award is not a consolation prize, it's awarded to the best of the best ...Vika's best in 2012 just wasn't enough to beat Serena's best even though Vika had a monster year!:wavey::wavey:

So did Venus in 2000 but they gave it to Hingis who skipped the Olympics :tape:

it wasn't fair for sure ,
but Hingis in 2000 won YEC + 5 Tier 1 titles (big titles on hard, clay and carpet) , Venus 2 Slams + Olympics + 0tier 1 (big titles on 2 surfaces hard and grass)
Azarenka in 2012 Slam + 3 tier 1 (all titles on hard), Serena 2 Slams, Olympics +Yec + 1-Tier1 (titles on hard, grass and clay). Actually Serena has twice more Slams and the rest of her WTA titles in 2012 are bigger than what Aza won and what is more she won 7 titles total , what is +1 to Azarenkas

There's no way she was losing this.

How close do you think it was between Serena and Vika? Would a Vika win at the YEC been enough for her to get the ITF with her holding the #1 for the majority of the year and winning a first slam?

The most undisputed ITF POY since Henin in for 2007?

Kvitova last year was close to as undisputed. Serena of 2012 > Kvitova of 2011 by a big margin, but Azarenka of 2012 > Wozniacki 2011 by a big margin too. Either ways Kvitova (2011) and Serena (2012) was way ahead of the #1 ranked player. Henin in 2007 was about five times further ahead of second best than either Kvitova in 2011 or Serena in 2012 though.
