View Full Version : Who has the best shots on tour?

The Dawntreader
Dec 10th, 2012, 06:03 PM
While it's the off season, I thought It'd be a good, unoriginal opportunity to make a thread determining which players have the best shots on tour, as well as other facets such as movement, mental strength etc. Unlike the Top 10 thread, you can include any player you think is worthy of defining any given category.

So here they are:

-Forehand CC

-Forehand DTL

-First Serve

-Second Serve

-Backhand CC

-Backhand DTL

-Return of serve

-Inside out forehand

-Inside out backhand

-Drive Volley

-Forehand volley

-Backhand volley

- Smash

- Lob

-Drop-shot

-Slice

-Movement

-Footwork

-Stamina

-Mental strength.

Let the fan-girl wars begin!

-Forehand CC: Ivanovic when playing well

-Forehand DTL: Serena

-First Serve: Serena

-Second Serve: Serena

-Backhand CC: Sharapova. Azarenka's a close second. Both are technically very fluid shots but Maria just hits a bigger ball so I give her the slight edge.

-Backhand DTL: Jankovic Azarenka

-Forehand volley: I'm no authority on net play (considering my own lack of ability and who my fave is  ) but Radwanska, Errani, Serena, Kvitova are all up there.

-Backhand volley: Errani's is pretty solid and so is Kvitova's

- Smash: Serena. It's always a shock to me when she misses one or doesn't put it away

- Lob: Serena. She doesn't use it a ton but when she does they're measured to perfection.

-Drop-shot: Radwanska. Errani's up there, too.

-Slice: Radwanska just because hers are so sneaky.

-Movement: Serena. Raw speed and excellent anticipation make up for her sometimes-lackadaisical footwork. Plus no one moves forward better than Serena. Kerber would probably be runner-up.

-Footwork: Azarenka, Sharapova, Li Na when she doesn't forget her brain

-Stamina: All the top defensive minded players (Kerber and such) have to have great stamina to be where they are playing the type of tennis they play. Serena and Maria are really fit too and don't seem to get worn out after long rallies or lots of close matches in a row.

-Mental strength: No one can touch Serena's will to win and, but honorable mentions to Azarenka (her self-belief and fearlessness when she's down is really impressive) and Sharapova (She's so resilient, and no active player has won more matches when playing like total crap than her)'

Also, I'll add:

Anticipation: Azarenka, Serena, Peak-Woz

Return of Serve: Azarenka (Serena and Maria hit more menacing returns when they connect but they're far less consistent)

Edit: Add Venus to pretty much everything involving the net

Inside out backhand is definitely Serena. A lot of players have really good inside out forehands so that one's tougher. I'm going with Ivanovic because I'm a sap. If I was a logical human being I'd probably pick Serena or maybe Stosur.

Forehand CC - Serena. Although this shot was somewhat MIA during Wimbledon

Forehand DTL - Serena. Because of her core strength and superior timing, she is able to change the direction and move it DTL better than any other player. I am becoming quite partial to Azarenka's on the run fh dtl these days. She has improved it quite a bit.

First Serve - Serena. No one even comes close to her. Just look at the aces and service points won record for this year. And she only started getting her serve going half way through the season.

Second Serve - Serena. Stosur has a kicker, but thats it. Serena can get some nasty slices, kickers and even flatten out her second serve.

Backhand CC - Consistently - Azarenka. When playing well - Kvitova, Sharapova - their best shot. Both use their height well and get great angles on it, Martha is better when returning with her BH CC while Kvitova is better at just exploding with it.

Backhand DTL - Consistently - Azarenka. When Playing well - Serena. When she is playing well, she leans into this shot changing direction at will, from ridiculous positions, returns etc. If her BH DTL is working, that means she is stepping into the court and it might as well be GSM

Return of serve - Azarenka. By far the most consistent returner on tour. Serena is the most explosive but not as consistent. Although the last return game of the YEC was

Inside out forehand - Stosur

Inside out backhand - Serena. AFAIK she is one of the very few people who even attempts this ? Wozniacki does it some times as well as Paszek and Timea.

Drive Volley - Sharapova

Forehand volley - Venus

Backhand volley - Vinci

Smash - Serena - her climbing the ladder smash is legendary. Leaves everyone singing praise of her athleticism

Lob - Radwanska

Drop-shot - Radwanska

Slice - Vinci

Movement - Kerber

Footwork - Errani

Stamina - Sharapova

Mental strength - Serena

I can't with y'all putting Stosur's slice as the best slice in the WTA. That's sad. :help:

That was the reason she lost at Wimbledon(?), IIRC. Especially her backhand slice, it looked so awkward and just allowed Cirstea(?) to unload on it.

I'd go for the latter.

Best slice should go to Graf as an honorary award, there isn't a great slice on tour IMO

That's what I thought, too, considering I put Ivanovic on my list

When Maria's confident her swing volleys are the best on tour IMO.

lol, no.

Second Serve - Serena. Stosur has a kicker, but thats it. Serena can get some nasty slices, kickers and even flatten out her second serve.
This, I think a lot of people must be putting Stosur just to balance out their lists or something  how can a shot be the best if it is absolutely taken apart by any 6'0+ player(Vika, Venus, Petra, Sharapova being more than enough to be a roadblock on any surface,) and even as a non-six footer(Serena) showed us at Charleston just taking it early is enough to completely neutralize it. Serena clearly has the best first and second serve.

- Second Serve: Serena Williams/Maria Sharapova

- Forehand CC: Kvitova (reliable and deadly even when her game is off)

- Forehand DTL: Venus (utilizes it more regularly than most big hitters and has options to follow it up)

- First Serve: Serena (greatest serve of all time)

- Second Serve: Serena (Stosur doesn't even come close because of her lack of variety. Maria's second serve is better than Sam's tbh)

- Backhand CC: Sharapova (rarely ever loses cc bh rallies; very deep and heavy, and consistently paints the lines)

- Backhand DTL: Venus (again, utilizes it more regularly than most players and to great success)

- Return of serve: Azarenka (consistent unlike Serena and Maria)

- Inside out forehand: Ivanovic (can flatten it out unlike Stosur, and much more aesthetically pleasing too)

- Inside out backhand: Serena (Venus is a close second)

- Drive Volley: Sharapova

- Forehand volley: Venus (her reach is unmatched)

- Backhand volley: Vinci (incredible control and has a lot of variety to boot)

- Smash: Stosur (probably the only top player who can actually consistently deliver a good backhand smash)

- Lob: Radwanska (honourable mention goes to Lisicki, both are probably the few players who are comfortable at lobbing from all areas of the court whether from the baseline or up at the net)

- Drop-shot: Radwanska

- Slice: Niculescu (nobody junkballs as well as Monica)

- Movement: Jankovic (with Clijsters retired, who else can straddle on all surfaces?

- Footwork: Sharapova (how often can you catch her off balance?)

- Stamina: Sharapova

- Mental strength: Serena

Surprised people are still saying Vee for down the line backhand. She rarely hits it now and when she does it doesn't have much angle like the good old days and isn't even very close to the line. Before wrist operation and at her best it would definitely win the battle. Still there has been the odd time post-surgery where it's still been pretty good.

I actually think she's been hitting her backhand with much more conviction this year. She seems to be hitting with a less pronounced open-stance than in '07-'11, and generally the shot looks more fluid, with greater disguise and and timing resembling how her backhand used to be struck.

She was hitting some absolute screamers at the Olympics and vs Errani in Cincinnati.
