Actually considering her last 4 season, except for 2012, calling her "mm player" may be too generous. Last season gives a promise that she still could be a decent MM queen, but with stupid scheduling, its less likely too happen.

Not a shock that she lost, but a disappointing scoreline. Alize beat her in 2007, but that was a long time ago. Scheppers won a much closer match last year in Sydney. Let's hope for a good AO draw...

Her serve is much better actually, but the forehand is leaking errors..even it is much more powerful now. :(

Alize is in a very tough section of the draw, with Venus and Maria. She plays Marina Erakovic, who is talented, but coming back from injury. If she wins that, it then would be Venus or Galina in the second round.

A marathon 3 1/2 hour win down under for Alize, 7-5, 6-7, 10-8. I didn't see the match, but the stats show only 8 unforced errors in three long sets which is pretty promising. She apparently saved a set point in the first set. Venus won easily and will be her next opponent. Allez! :)

Venus beat Alize 6-3, 6-3 in the first stadium night match. Watching the match highlights, it looks like Alize was competitive. She went up 2-0 in the first set, but was broken in three of the next four service games and lost the set. They were on serve at three all in the second set when Venus took control. Next up for Venus is Sharapova, who looks to be in dominant form. On paper this looks likes a great match, but I think Sharapova comes through without too much difficulty.

Alize is playing doubles with Mona Barthel. Mona's a great young player but I don't know much about her doubles talents. We will see how they do.

I'm impressed by Alize so far. She changed her serve motion a bit maybe it will be more consistent, and changed her forehand grip. It will be good I hope. It's a hard task for her, she has to get used to it, it's a long time, so I thought she won't have huge results already in Australia.
It is good that she could win a match in Melbourne, and win a crazy match like against Erakovic. It is good for her confidence. Against Venus she was good, she was a break up in the first and in the second too. I'm content with her.
She scored 160 points (last year 10 or 20) and she is very close to the top 30. Until Strasbourg every point will be a gift so I really hope she will be seeded at Roland Garros and also in Wimbledon.
I think she will be playing Fed Cup in France on indoor clay, I think she will play singles matches. Maybe she can play a good match against Kerber, won't be easy. After that Paris indoor is not her surface :help:
And AO is not over yet, good luck in doubles!!!

A BIG QUESTION!!!! Why was Gabriel Urpi (Pennetta's coach) in Alize's box today? There were Mauresmo, Goven and Urpi. What does it mean? Now Pennetta is training in Barcelona...

Alizé Molik
Jan 17th, 2013, 04:51 AM
Not sure on the coach question but watching both these matches you could see that they have tried to put more weight on the forehand. It is still producing a lot of stupid errors on routine balls so that really needs to be worked on. If you are going to play the game Alize does you need to not make so many errors. Serve looked like it had more on it too. I'm not too concerned about the apparent "ugliness" of the forehand that people claim. if Alize could get close to a Justine Henin type game that works I would be really happy. I feel like she needs to play a schedule similar to her 2008 one that worked so well and propelled her into the top 20.

Now Pennetta is training in Barcelona...Gabriel Urpi is the new coach of french fed cup team. Amélie proposed him to work with her and he agreed in august 2012. So, he already worked with all the french top players except Marion during 3 weeks last november and last december.

Alize lost a close doubles match and is out of the AO, 7-6, 4-6, 7-5. She started working to improve her serve last year, and I hope that trend continues. Happy to see she is also focused on improving her forehand, I think the past few years she has hit her forehand off the back foot way too much. It may work on clay against mid level opponents, but she's not going to beat any top players on any surface unless she can add a strong flat forehand. When she is playing with confidence, that shot can be a weapon and she does not have too many of those. If she can continue to improve her serve, I would like to see her come to the net a bit more and not always be glued to the baseline. Not many points to defend until March, so getting back to top 30 is possible with a strong run in a few tourneys.

Fed Cup draws were announced and Alize will not be playing singles for the team. Alize and Razzano are scheduled to play the final doubles match. Bartoli has pulled out with the "flu". Interesting decision by Mauresmo to move both Parmentier and Mladenovic ahead of Alize in the singles. I guess since Mladenovic just beat Goerges in Paris, that makes some sense. Parmentier has a decent record against both Goerges and Lisicki. We all know Alize's troubles in FedCup. We will see how it works out...

Pax
Feb 10th, 2013, 01:21 AM
Yeah what a silly decision that Alize isn't playing singles!!!!!!!!!! That makes no sence. lol

Who decided this? Mauresmo?? This decision for me seems a stupid joke.
-Alize is is good form, it's not fair to her.
-Alize is World No. 36 at the moment, far more better rankings than the others.
-We can say that Alize played this year after some weeks consistent.
-Her performance in Paris indoors, which is her weakest surface, was very impressive, good fight against Safarova, Alize was competitive there.
-They play in Limoges on clay, which is her best surface.
-She plays well on clay, she can give back a lot of balls on every surface, and on clay it is more effective.
-And Alize could have been very dangerous to Lisicki and Goerges, who can hit a lot of unforced errors and play a lot of times without brain.

Not letting her play I think it is a huge mistake. Mladenovic plays, who played well in Paris on fast surface. So why they play on clay if Mladenovic is playing well on fast and they want Mladenovic to play?????? Why is Parmentier playing and not Alize??

Alize's smile at the photos of the official draw for me doesn't seem very honest. I think she is pissed, and I can understand her.

If Alize plays tomorrow singles it will be very hard for her, big pressure too because the Germans lead 2-0. It won't be fair.
It's hard to say, but the French team deserves the lose if they decide the things like this. One positive thing is that Alize was at the Fed Cup and she can qualify for the next Olympic Games. She doesn't have to play this event if she doesn't want.

bad decition, but you can see what parmugtier and mladenovic did yesterday :oh: karma is a bitch, amelie

HowardH
Feb 10th, 2013, 11:52 AM
To be honest, I would have expected this scenario: they choose fast hardcourt, use Bartoli and Mladenovic, given her Paris indoors run.

But with Marion out with flu, maybe Mladenovic and ... not sure about the second singles choice, maybe Razzano who hits very flat shots.

On clay however I'm really surprised that they didn't use Alize in singles. Her game suits clay more than any of the other French players. It was always going to be a tough tie though. Sabine is strong on quick surfaces as she has shown at Wimbledon, Julia is strong on clay where it becomes difficult to rush her big swing, so even the surface choice was tricky, but with Bartoli theoretically available I would have gone with a fast surface.

jiffster
Feb 11th, 2013, 02:17 PM
I think it says a lot about Mauresmo's lack of confidence in Alize. Clay is her best surface, and she was the highest ranked French player on the team. The fact that Amelie thought an untested Mladenovic was a better choice than Alize--on clay--is a bit puzzling. Like I said we all know Alize's troubles in FedCup, but she has been a loyal supporter of the team and deserved the chance to play in the singles.

I don't care how well the other girl may/may not have played (she played well last week) - #36 (2nd seed) doesn't lose to an inexperienced number #156 in the second round on her "best surface". Alize was broken three times in the final set, and double faulted five times. Pretty disappointing loss.

Alize will play qualifier Castano in the first round in Mexico, and would meet meet Candela (who she beat easily in Bad Gastien last year) in the second round. There are only 16 seeds at Indian Wells...Alize will not be one of them. Alize plays a qualifier in the first round and then Wozniacki in the second. Her ranking will likely take a hit the next two weeks, she has a lot of points to defend next week from her finals run at the 100,000+ ITF Nassau tourney last year (a tournament that is now gone). Alize needs to beat Wozniacki just to defend her Indian Wells points from last year, and will need to get to the fourth round to avoid losing most of the points she won in the Bahamas last year. She has never done very well at Indian Wells, but hopefully this will give her extra inspiration and she will make a good run. :)

Alize beat Robson in Miami 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. More good news is that Azarenka withdrew, so her third round opponent is a lucky loser Lauren Davis. I think she has an opportunity to win a few more matches here.

The match was delayed by rain twice, and a power outage as well, and didn't end until after 10pm. I think the delays helped Alize, she served terribly in the first set. Robson was all over her second serve. The score was only close because Robson played equally poorly. At the end of the first set Alize asked to see her coach and was very upset, crying. Something happened during the delay and she really turned it around. She will play her third round match on Sunday.

According to a posting in GM, Alize was supposedly so confused by the heat that she had to ask her coach in the locker room whether she won or lost the match.

Worrying... not sure whether she should try to play or not at this point. I'm finding it hard to believe she will be able to play properly. If she feels up to it, maybe start the match with Vinci but don't continue if the effects of heat exhaustion reappear.

I was at the match yesterday. It was very hot, they played midday, with swirling winds. Davis played a very solid first set, was getting everything back and hitting some nice winners. I think because of the wind it was difficult for both players to be super aggressive, so the rallies were long with lots of looping topspin shots. The games and rallies were long, and there were many deuce points on both sides. It was almost like watching a clay court match. Mauresmo was in the stands watching and was full of support for Alize's efforts. Alize was in a lot of trouble, but started to turn things around in the second set. She hit some pretty effective drop shots, and Davis started missing a bit. By the end of the second set both players were exhausted. Davis was clearly cramping in the back of her legs, and both players left the court for 15 minutes between sets 2 and 3. Alize started strong in the third set, and opened up a 4-1 lead. I was surprised that Davis had seemed to recover from her cramping, and was moving well. I thought she might default early in the third set, but instead she seemed to revive and started playing better again. At 4-1 Alize was in the driver's seat, but the match did not feel resolved yet. Alize is always capable of losing her service game, and it seemed like it would still be a fight to the finish. In the end, I think Alize's experience pushed her past Davis. Alize fought really hard in the final games, though she was clearly in distress. Still she played smart, and was aggressive when she could be and it paid off. At match point Alize screamed in victory, a win that she deserved and really wanted. Davis walked off the court quickly into the arms of her coach, she was very upset and crying. Alize walked off looking fine, smiling and waving to the crowd. Neither player emerged from the small court 2 stadium for quite awhile, in fact the next doubles match started before either player left. Davis did not leave in a wheelchair, but she was rushed out by a bunch of security and she was clearly not feeling well. Alize left 10 minutes later, and was rolled out in a wheelchair with towels of ice on her neck and legs. Shot lots of photos, will post when I get a chance.

Her match with Vinci is mid to late afternoon today, and heat should not be a factor. Vinci came back to beat Suarez-Navarro and looked pretty strong in doing so. This could be a tough match.

Could you please split your post into paragraphs, jiffster? It'd be a lot easier to read. Thanks. :)

I like that she was competitive against VInci. There is work to do on her serve but from what I've been able to glimpse from her Miami +IW matches her FH looks like it's coming together.

Making the fourth round in Miami is a good accomplishment, but the match with Vinci was very winnable. Alize played a great first set, serving very well and dictating the pace. It was the best set of tennis I have personally seen her play in Miami in years.

In the first game in the second set, it seemed like her lower back started to bother her. She was holding it, and stretching it between points. All her momentum disappeared quickly and her mood completely changed. Her serve lost a lot of effectiveness, and Vinci was in complete control of set 2.

Alize never stopped fighting and opened up a 3-0, 2 break lead in the third set. But her serving betrayed her yet again and Vinci quickly reeled off 4 straight games. Vinci started attacking the net on anything short, which was a good strategy and well executed with lethal net play. Alize finally held serve and got to 4-4 in a very tense eighth game where she held off many break points and hit some incredible winners. Alize had her chances with Vinci serving at 4-4. she had a few break points, but Vinci played tough and made some big shots to go up 5-4.

I had a strong sense that Alize had to break at 4-4 or the match was over. Her serve was a big weapon in the first set, but it was a real liability in the third. Vinci was all over Alize's serve in the final game and quickly went up 0-40 and finished off the match. If Alize could have just held serve a couple of times in the third, she would have won this match. Still, the level of play from both players was quite high and Vinci did go out and grab the victory, Alize did not just hand it to her.

If she was feeling the effects of yesterday's match, she didn't show it. I watched her practice in the morning and she looked just fine. She played late in the day, and the temperature was much cooler with very little wind.

All in all Miami was a success for her this year. She will pick up a nice bunch of points that will boost her ranking. But honestly she got a huge break when Azarenka pulled out, otherwise she would have likely walked away with only one win here. But that's how it goes, sometimes the breaks are in your favor and sometimes they aren't.

It was good to see her take advantage of the good fortune, a loss to Davis in the third round would have felt like a real missed opportunity. I don't know if she could have beaten Jankovic in the quarters, but I would have liked to see her get that chance.

It was Schmeidlova's first WTA tour main draw match. She got to the semi's in an ITF on hard courts a week ago, and one three qualifying matches (beat S. Peer) to get to this match. She was clearly on a bit of a roll coming into the match against Alize. Still, this is a pretty bad loss for Alize. Not a good way to start the clay court season.

She wasn't injured and they didn't argue about a wrong ball call  Alize's first serve broke the net mounting so they had to fix it :wavey:

Alize wearing Karin down. Lost the first set 6-1, managed to pull out the second, very tight, 7-5, now 4-0 up in the third.

Alize has learned to use her forehand topspin, fitness and footspeed to wear opponents down physically and mentally, which is probably the reason why she has risen back to 33 in the world.

25 April 2013 3:23 PM

Queen of Aces with Alize Cornet

Answering the questions this week is France's world No 33 Alize Cornet.

What’s the best match you have ever played?
I think the best match I ever played was in 2007. I was 17 and a qualifier at the US Open, and had won through to the third round. I was playing against Jelena Jankovic, who I think was in the top five at the time. I think I played the best match of my life, even though I lost. It was my first experience on a big court with the crowd behind me. I played my best tennis and I enjoyed it so much.

What’s the worst?
I think I played a couple of really bad matches in Fed Cup because I couldn’t handle the stress and pressure I felt. There’s not one match that comes to mind, but I know that in Fed Cup I’ve had some troubles. At those times you’re on court feeling so confused and uncomfortable about your game, it’s horrible!

If you could play a match against any player from history, who would it be and why?
I would have loved to play against Justine Henin. I never played against her even though we were playing at the same time. She was a player I really admired and I would have loved to play against her. It would have been interesting to see what I would have done on court to play against her great game. Unfortunately it’s not ever going to happen, but it would have been fun.

What’s your comfort food/guilty pleasure if you lose a match?
It doesn’t matter if I win or lose, I love chocolate! It’s really my guilty pleasure. I could eat it until I feel sick, but I try to be good and control myself. When I feel really sad about a match it’s something that makes me feel better.

Who was your idol growing up?
My idol growing up, without a doubt, was Andy Roddick. He was my favourite player when I was 13, 14, and playing in the juniors. I used to love imitating him on the court! When I got a dog when I was 15, I called him Andy! (laughing) I’ve told that story to a few people and it’s funny because it tells you how much I really loved Andy when I was growing up. I’m sad he’s stopped playing tennis but I think he had a good career.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever been sent by a fan?
I don’t really have that many things sent to me by fans and I remember one day I received a small decorative object, it was like a small fountain and you put water in it – it was actually cute! I don’t think I ever figured out exactly how to make the fountain work properly, but it was a lovely thought from the fan who gave it to me.

What’s your favourite song to dance to?
There’s a lot of songs I’m really enjoying at the moment, but I think the one that makes me feel good before matches is called “I could be the one” by Avicii.

What strange thing is regularly in your suitcase as you travel round the world?
I’m not superstitious at all, so there’s not really one thing I have to have with me. I always travel with the same set of stuff. I think when you have to pack your bags every week it really becomes automatic that you put the same things in the bag. But nothing strange in my bags!

What would be your last meal on earth (all three courses)
Definitely start with prosciutto...it’s in the same category as chocolate for me, I could eat it forever. Then for main meal I’d have chilli con carne from my mum. It’s funny, I only like her version. I like it much less when other people cook it. For dessert I’d love to have chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream.

What’s the one object you couldn’t live without?
For sure my phone. I would love to be less dependent on my phone but it’s my contact with everyone – my family and friends – and I really couldn’t live without it.

Craziest or funniest question you’ve ever been asked in a press conference?
This one is an easy one for me. The press conferences are always so boring and they always ask me the same things, even the French journalists, and I never really get any funny questions! It’s a shame because it would be fun to get some other questions sometimes apart from tennis. I’m not sure what questions I would ask if I was a journalist, but I think it’s good to get asked different questions sometimes (laughs).

As I expected, Natassja is quite a tough opponent for Alize. 1-2, down a break, a battle is developing. Alize needs to fight back, Natassja has more power than her so she will need to use her footwork and depth, spin etc.

HowardH
May 13th, 2013, 01:04 PM
Lost 2 and 2. Natassja has a big game and plenty of promise. To beat her you need to attack and or counter her attacks and expose her movement. Alize didn't produce her best at all so had no answer.

Hopefully she can produce some better form in RG.

When I watched Sabine beat Burnett it seemed that when Sabine hit big returns etc Natassja couldn't move to defend that well, but it was a different situation against Alize.

TheJoh
May 13th, 2013, 02:06 PM
She played just awful as tennis player from the third hundred, backhand was terrible forehand was short, Burnett did what they wanted, the serve was very weak, do not know how it could play, so get worse this week in Madrid, she played well enough, but there is simply no words. Next Strasbourg. As for Roland Garros, it does not seem to lose anything points, and it points in 1530, now it is 29, it will depend on rivals hope to remain in the top 32, as rated on May 20 will be shaped draw RG.

TheJoh
May 13th, 2013, 03:22 PM
Generally, of course, Alize draws with very lucky, she has not won in 30 of the top tennis players since February 2011 (Kuznetsova), even though she is now in the top 30, and today again lucky with the draw, Italian did not show anything special. Well you can not score, then you do not make mistakes, play as Errani, Wozniacki, Aga, not okay, we would not have seen another game Alize, but she played in 2008, beginning of 2009, the moments in 2012, but the same match against Kerber , she WINNERS more than the Germans had, and that the more powerful Italian Kerber plays? I doubt it. I hope today was just a bad day, the more the wind was very strong. I hope this fear is no longer seen. And the time to have a really strong beat.

So Lepchenko us now overtaken Alize is 30, thank you Petra and Roberta for, what Lisicki and Vesnina were defeated accordingly, I think that Serena beat Robson and Stosur beat Peng, and then the real danger may come from Ursula Radwanska and Yanina Wickmaer, but they need to third round, at least go in,and Lucie Safarova of which should go to the finals tournament in Prague. So it is likely to be seeded Alize at the RG:)

This is a great win for her though considering she got beaten pretty badly both times she played her before in 12,13. Maybe she will beat EB but I'm not really sure...Did anyone see Alize's tweet about being stressed before the match today? I still think the mental isn't there.

She played quite well in the final but Lucie really handed it to her in the end. I'd like to see more of this assertive court positioning and using the opponents pace to hit winners and be aggressive rather than just moonballing with no purpose.

Best she's played in a long time and held it together emotionally (for the most part). I would love to see her play the post W clay swing and pick up another title/get into the top 20 again.

good luck

Alize lost 2 and 4. But I think we can't say anything bad about Alize, she is not a grass court player.:smooch:

I think her new serve, backhand and slice is good on grass, but the big problem is her forehand, she has to improve it on grass, but I know she's already worked a lot on it.

 I missed her aggressive shots, she didn't go to the net, she had nothing to lose, but yeah Li is a tough opponent.

Hope she will win a match in Wimbledon.

Alize beat Hsieh easily 6-3, 6-2. Next up Pennetta who got a walkover when Azarenka pulled out of the tournament. Good chance to get to the 4th round. :)
