Whitney Houston Acknowledges Drug Abuse

Dec 3, 2:18 PM (ET)

NEW YORK (AP) - Whitney Houston admits she's abused drugs in the past, but says she's gotten beyond that time through prayer.

The Grammy-winning singer also discusses the pressures of stardom and her decade-long marriage to Bobby Brown in an interview with Diane Sawyer on "Primetime," scheduled to air at 9 p.m. EST Wednesday on ABC.

When Sawyer asks her, "Is it alcohol? Is it marijuana? Is it cocaine? Is it pills?" Houston responds, "It has been at times."

"All?" Sawyer asks.

"At times," Houston says. "Uh-hm."

The 39-year-old concedes she's "addicted to a few things."

"Making love," Houston says. "I don't like to think of myself addicted. I like to think ... I had a bad habit ... which can be broken."

Houston's shockingly thin frame at last year's Michael Jackson tribute sparked reports that she was ill, which she vehemently denies. She also says she's not anorexic or bulimic.

"Let's get that straight. I am not sick. OK?" she says. "I've always been a thin girl. I am not going to be fat, ever. Let's get that straight. Whitney is not going to be fat, ever."

Brown also appears in the interview, and says he's frequently used marijuana because he's been diagnosed as bipolar. The 33-year-old was arrested last month in Atlanta on drug and traffic charges.

"Me and drugs. We're not friends. We're not friends at all," Brown says. "I'm a very high-strung person. ... (Marijuana) seems to help me ... from going up and down."

Houston says she's done partying now, and has found strength through daily prayer. Her new album, "Just Whitney," comes out Dec. 10.

"I'm not the strongest every day, but I'm not the weakest, either," she says. "And I won't break."

I agree. Bobby has turned Whitney out whether she want's to acknowledge it or not. Whitney use to never been like this, she was always a good girl with a very loving and supportive family.
I have most of her older live performances and interviews and she can sing any pop chick off the stage.

However, when Bobby came in her life she started slipping. The first sign was at the Grammy's when she and CeCe Winans were singing the final number from the Waiting To Exhale soundtrack. Whitney could barely hit a note, and ever since then she has been missing notes left and right. The BET awards was so embarassing. She had to call a young lady to the stage to finish singing her song.

I can't wait to see this interview. I hope Whitney is together. I don't think I can continue to see Whitney continue this downward spiral.

harloo, whitney just signed a 150 million dollor record contract so i would like to on a downward spiral with her. Everybody makes mistakes so why not her?

Dawn, people had been saying she was gay and "too white" so she fixed both of those by marriing Bobby Brown and they have a kid and seem to be in love. At least they are still together in this age of divorce.

If she drops Bobby, I would like to see Whitney married to:
1-Michael Jackson (their kid would have golden lungs for singing)
2-Halle Berry's ex, the baseball player. They would be nice together maybe.

Whitney's on the right track by being honest to herself. This is a great sign and I wish her the best.

anton, the money will always be their for Whitney. Her voice is TIMELESS in my opinion. She has longevity, but I'm happy she got the big contract but I just wish that she's healthy and happy first and foremost.

Also, whitney and micheal wouldn't work. I think Whitney likes sex too much.

And please don't even suggest David Justice for Whitney. He is not only a wife beater, but a skirt chaser. My sister wen't to school at Spelman and tells me that he would be up at the mall talking to every female he could and this is while he was married to Halle.

Now Halle is with someone who slutted around on her. Ughh! They should just let me hook them up with someone.:lick:

Best of luck to you Whitney! She's come in for a lot of slack over the past 10 years.. But she's still about and (seemingly) on the road to recovery.

I wonder where that poster is who posted all those hysterical rantings last week about how mean we were and how Whitney would NEVER do drugs and we were all liars etc etc etc
I'd go and find it if I could be bothered

But good for her for acknowledging it ;)

lol jon, i was thinking the same.

does anybody know how old their daugther is now? i have a feeling that the girl will have a toughchild :(

I like Whitney and think she has a fabulous voice. However, I think that her comment that she's overcome her addictions through prayer is bullshit, to be frank. At least she is making an effort to get on the right track though. I love seeing her perform.

Personally I think Whitney is a tragic figure. I'm hoping she and her husband can pull through this difficult period of their lives.

I hope she is really off of drugs and this interview is not some total bullshit p.r. puff-piece like Sawyer did with Michael Jackson and Lisa-Marie. Remember that one, where they all denied any pedophile-related wrongdoing and told the public how happy they were. Sure, like anyone believed that for 3 seconds. I thought Sawyer was a real journalist until I saw that. But I hope Whitney Houston is really clean now.

I hope many of you will get a chance to see the show tonight or tape it..

Has anyone noticed that when Whitney performs live, she sweats ALOT, was that caused by the drug or watever?? Just wondering..

NEWS - Whitney Houston Tells All To 'Primetime'

(12/04/02, 12 p.m. ET) - Whitney Houston is the subject of Wednesday's (December 4) special edition of ABC's Primetime, airing at 9 p.m. ET. During an hour-long interview with host Diane Sawyer, Houston discusses the many health and drug rumors that have dogged her for years. Her often-troubled husband Bobby Brown also makes an appearance during the interview to discuss his own personal demons.

One key topic Sawyer discusses with Houston is the singer's frail frame. At last year's Michael Jackson 30th Anniversary concerts, Houston appeared extremely thin, with speculations of anorexia, bulimia, and heroin use running rampant. In the interview, Houston addresses her size by saying, "I've always been a thin girl. I am not going to be fat, ever. Let's get that straight. Whitney is not going to be fat, ever."

Houston also discusses her arrest on drug-possession charges, and her battle with addiction by noting, "I pray every day, Diane. I'm not the strongest every day, but I'm not the weakest, either. And I won't break. And I won't break."

As for Brown, who was recently arrested for possession of marijuana, the former New Edition star reveals, "Me and drugs. We're not friends. We're not friends at all. I used to smoke a lot of marijuana, a lot...I'm a very high-strung person. I'm bipolar. It seems to help me from going up and down...And it helps me to keep a level in my life."

As for why their marriage always seems to be front-page news, Brown offers, "I think marriage is turbulent. You know, we're just in the public eye, you know? A lot of people, you know, that are married go through worse problems than us."

I give Whitney much credit for opening up on national tv.

I've come to the conclusion after seeing Whitney's interview that she is still using drugs. Her husband Bobby admitted that he stills uses drugs. Unbelievable!

I hope she overcomes her denial and gets treatment.

Whitney Houston's Dad Makes TV Plea to Daughter
Thu December 5, 2002 09:01 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop diva Whitney Houston's ailing father, who is suing her for $100 million, called for his daughter to settle the case in a televised plea Thursday, urging her from his hospital bed to "pay me the money that you owe me."
John Houston, 82, made his unusual public appeal on the syndicated television show "Celebrity Justice," a day after his daughter said in her own ABC interview that her father's suit was hurtful and motivated by someone who "has put fear in his heart."

The elder Houston recently filed a breach-of-contract suit against the 39-year-old singer alleging that his daughter hired him and his business partner to help her with various financial difficulties and to negotiate her contract with Arista Records. But the suit says his company was never paid.

"I never thought about suing my daughter," he told "Celebrity Justice." "I thought about suing the corporation that belongs to Whitney and she happened to be right in the middle of it." The nature of Houston's illness was not disclosed.

Addressing his daughter directly during the interview, Houston said, "You get your act together honey, and you pay me the money that you owe me. If you do that, you haven't got a lawsuit. ... At my age, I haven't got that long. Now if you think I got that long, you think about it. You step into my shoes. I would like to spend the last years of my life on a boat some place."

Appearing on a special edition of ABC's "Primetime" with Diane Sawyer on Wednesday the younger Houston acknowledged a history of drug and alcohol abuse but denied persistent rumors that she is suffering from eating disorders.

She said she still loves her father, despite their legal dispute, and hoped they would work out their differences, but added, "They'll never get $100 million out of me. I know that!"

The "Primetime" interview was a ratings bonanza for ABC, averaging 21.3 million viewers to rank as the most watched news magazine broadcast on any network since Connie Chung interviewed congressman Gary Condit on ABC's "Primetime Thursday" in August 2001, ABC said.

"Celebrity Justice" is produced by Time Telepictures Television West Coast Productions, the AOL Time Warner Inc. unit behind the syndicated TV show "Extra."
