Does anyone know what's up with Mayo Hibi? She has always had excellent results. Even this year up until the end of the summer. Since then she has not had good results at all. This year she went to the Semi's of a 50K and now can't get out of qualifying of Jr's. Just wondering if she had an injury or anything. Thanks

If Eleanor isn't too rusty, this could be a good draw for her. Jazzi will be about 50/50 with Horvit, but I really hope she can come through and test herself against such a good player like Siniakova.

Indeed. I don't really understand where this gigantic slump came from. Her team needs to do something about this ASAP... I have no idea what her coaching situation is, but perhaps she should change it up.

McEnroe disciple Jessica Golovin displays fire and finesse in upset of top seed in OB 16s

By Harvey Fialkov (http://bio.tribune.com/HarveyFialkov), Sun Sentinel
6:51 p.m. EST, December 4, 2012

PLANTATION —
Fiery tennis great John McEnroe (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/topic/sports/john-mcenroe-PESPT004850.topic) was known for his rage for perfection and shotmaking, that included a wicked sliced backhand and delicate touch at the net.

So after watching unseeded Jessica Golovin question line calls and unleash self-critical soliloquies en route to toppling the top-seeded Johnnise Renaud 7-6 (0), 1-6, 6-3 in the Orange Bowl (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/topic/sports/football/orange-bowl-EVSPR00003525.topic) International Tennis Championship Girls' 16s Tuesday, it made sense that she trains at McEnroe's tennis academy on Randall's Island in New York.

"I've always had that [fire] since I started playing,'' said Golovin, 15, who's American with Russian parents. "I have that in me. It's always great to have variety in girls tennis because most girls hit with a lot of power, so it's good to mix it up. People say it's like I'm chopping vegetables.''

Renaud, a lanky, left-hander with a laidback nature, trains on the slick, hard courts of C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/topic/us/florida/broward-county/pembroke-pines-PLGEO100100403220000.topic) where power rules. So when Golovin went to the "'junk" with sliced drop shots on the slow, clay courts of Veltri Tennis Center along with well-timed forays to the net, Renaud became tentative.

"This is only my second tournament on clay all year,'' said Renaud, 16. "It's abnormal to play someone with so much slice, but I got beat and have to adjust.''

Golovin also owns an excellent two-handed backhand, and that's how she sealed the seond-round upset on her third match point. As for McEnroe's legendary temper, Golovin's never heard of it, nor has she witnessed it.

In the Girls' 18s draw, a couple of precocious 14-year-olds advanced to the second round. Seventh-seeded Ana Konjuh of Croatia displayed the all-court form that earned her a Grade A title at last week's Eddie Herr (18s) tournament in Bradenton as she pounded a gimpy Tornado Ali Black of Boca Raton (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/community/news/bocaraton?track=tax-bocaraton), 6-1, 6-3.

"There's pressure,'' Konjuh said. "You won Eddie Herr and they're expecting you to do the same here. But you have to get used to it. I'm focusing on being the best I can.''

Black needed medical attention for a left knee injury.

Pint-sized dynamo Maria Shishkina, 14, who has been compared to WTA (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/topic/sports/tennis/womens-tennis-association-ORSPT000696.topic) glamour girl and four-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/topic/sports/tennis/maria-sharapova-PESPT008360.topic) for her looks and strokes since she left Kazakhstan to train in Florida seven years ago, cruised past Austrian Barbara Haas 6-4, 6-2.

Shishkina, who considers herself American, flexed her muscles early when a first serve snapped the center net strap in the first set. Although she nearly blew a 5-1 lead, Shishkina's relentless ground attack wore down her 16-year-old opponent, who was ranked 43rd or 139 spots higher than Mishkina.

"Age doesn't matter on the women's tour,'' Mishkina :o said. "Everyone's a great player, you just do your best. If you don't believe in yourself you're not going to get anywhere.''

On Saturday during the qualifying rounds, Plantation police were called to the site to investigate whether a father had whacked his daughter on the head with a racket after she lost a match. According to the police report, the player who won the match heard her opponent cry out, and when she turned around, the girl was holding her head with a bleeding laceration over her left eye. The father was walking way holding a racket.

He denied hitting her, and suggested she was hurt by falling or running into a post. The girl said she did not know how she got hurt. None of the eyewitnesses actually saw the father hit the girl, so no charges were filed and the man and his daughter walked away, on to the next tournament, where the same thing might happen again.

It would be even more ironic if she lost to Siniakova as last year Putintseva beat Kontaveit at Eddie Herr before losing to her in the Orange Bowl final

Marcella has adpated really well to the clay. I didn't think the Green would suit her as much as the red. I sense that Ana might do a Putintseva and lose in the final after winning Eddie Herr... It would be even more ironic if she lost to Siniakova as last year Putintseva beat Kontaveit at Eddie Herr before losing to her in the Orange Bowl final
So Taylor has to win to guarentee her number one ranking right? :)

No, Taylor will end with #1 ranking since she made the semis.

If my math is right, Katerina would end the year with #1 ranking if she wins the final and Taylor loses her doubles semi (playing now). The final points tally would be Katerina with 1378.75 points and Taylor 1360.

Would be shocking if Taylor and Gabby lost to Dunne/Makarova though...

What I'm confused about is that at the beginning of the tourney they said Taylor had to reach the finals in order to secure number 1, but then the USTA released something after she reached the semis that she had clinched it. I would think they wouldn't have released that news had they not been 100% sure, but who knows.

Regardless of the loss, it's been a great year for Taylor. She has loads to be proud of and I'm really looking forward to seeing how her game progresses as she plays more on the pro tour. Am I the only one that thinks playing the junior slams might still be a good idea for her though? I'm a huge proponent of players not lingering in juniors, however it is not like Taylor is dominating at this level in singles. She has had some great singles results of course, but her doubles results are what have really locked up number one for her. It might be a good idea for her to complement a pro-heavy schedule with just playing the junior slams. Sloane and Melanie both did that at 17 if I remember correctly.

Konjuh is really someone to watch out for. Sounds like she's matured a ton both physically and in her game... I'll be interested to see how she does this next year.

Yup, USTA is right :) On her ITF profile page, they don't add in her 180 doubles bonus points, so they show her points total as 1300 and not 1345 as rankings reflect. I went of the 1300 number, my mistake.

Sara Sorribes should have played this. She is the reigning U16 European Champion beating Siniakova easily in the final. Since Orange Bowl is played on claycourts again she could have done some damage here.

I personally have a different opinion on the rankings.
I think more emphasis on Grand Slams is needed, that's why I often complain :D
But to tell you the truth, I think that the rankings are pretty appropriate right now, with Konjuh, Abanda, Kontaveit, Bouchard, Townsend and Lottner all being Top 10 :)

Could have done some damage? I think she would've been the big favorite to take the title  Sara doesn't give a shit about juniors and I think that's the right choice. If she did, she would've been a big threat to any top player on clay though.

True, I don't get why tournaments like Osaka or Abierto Juvenil have the same ranking system as the Grand Slams  It's just dumb.
Yeah, the top 10 looks well, but I think Siniakova, Bencic and Uberalova deserves to be there too. Plus, any of the girls ranked between #11 and #15 (Zhao, Danilina, Zacarias, Crawford, Vickery) seems better then any player ranked #16 - #25

Well the winners of Grand Slams get double the points of the winners of regular GAs. For example winning a Grand Slam you get 500 points but for winning the Orange Bowl you only get 250.

I can't believe that Varvara Flink's Final at Abierto Jiuveinl got the same amount of points as Anna Karolina's French Open Final, Elina Svitolina's Wimbledon final and Anett's US Open Final
Also, they need either to make Grand Slams a seperate category above GA or have less or even no GAs besides Grand Slams :0) I mean some of the Grand Slams are so strong :(

Konjuh... one to watch out for in the future. In last 10 years only two players have won the Orange Bowl at 14 (if my calculations are correct). Nicole Vaidisova and Michelle Larcher de Brito. Hopefully she can imitate their early pro success but not suffer the burnout/meltdowns that they did.

And I started to post in her thread :oh: Then, a month and a half after, Ana won Santa Croce and I watched her for the first time in that final which she won over Barty (I know, I know, Barty retired at 6-4 2-5) and then I knew she was a real deal

Well, it's not like she is a totally unknown before this, the first time i heard about her was when she was 10 (well 9, because she was born in december) when she lost against Virginia Peña in the final of Smrikva Bowl. And she always was one of the best players born in 1997, but i think it was last year when she stepped up, and start to rise her level. In some terms is a similar case to Vekic, always a good player among the tops of her cathegory, but suddenly rise up over the rest. We only can hope her progression continues. Wta needs some young stars

Whatever happened to Peña? I remember her being featured on that special about the Nike Junior Masters and she seemed like a fun kid with a good game. Mestach, Uberalova, and Quinzi were all featured on that program as well and have done pretty big things (granted all were playing in the 14s division I think) but I have yet to hear anything about Virginia.

Peña was one of the best players of 1997, she had wins against Konjuh and Ostapenko, and she used to defeat Sorribes, but in the Nike spanish master that year, she was injured in the back. She won that match against Sorribes, and even was runner up of the international masters that year, but she had to stop playing for six months.
She came back to play the european nation challenge u12, and even she won all her matches but one (against Ploskina) wich was quite impressive for a girl coming back from a long injury.
Then she only played spanish master nike, she lost with Payola, and that was her last match. Her injury came back, and she retired. I think it were too many injuries at such young age, and too much pressure too. She had a very unusual game for a spanish player, with flat groundstrokes. It was a pity, because she had a lot of potential

Yeah, it sucks when great potentials fall apart, whatever the reasons may be. A new Spanish with flat groundstrokes would've been a good addition to the game. Beating the kinds of Konjuh, Ostapenko and Sorribes is impressive.
Do you guys know other similar cases of good prospects who retired very early?

jj74
Dec 11th, 2012, 09:25 PM
I think she doesn't play tennis anymore, but i watch a couple of pics of her recently and she look very happy. And injury like that is really bad, but the fact that she was injuried so young could be an advantage.
Yes, she was very talented, and she was one of the tops of her age, but it was too soon to know if she could really make it, so in my opinion is easier to move on with your life. It's not like if you are a top junior ready to play pros and have that kind of injury.
It was a pity because she had a very different game from other young spaniards like Sorribes or Payola who play with a lot of top spin, but unfortunately we'll never know if she would be a big star or another promising girl who never fullfill her potential
