Grandin/Ulhirova and their 31 tournaments played this season (best result: lost final in Strasbourg) would have made it this year :oh:

Wimbledon & Olympics winners would have not :spit:

@spiceboy

simply since the itf and olympic commitee dont require 52 week doubles credentials.

i think the fact any singles player in the top 20 or so can team up with a decent server to rack up most mm titles proves the doubles tour as irrelevant for an 8 team format.
gone are the days that a player played doubles for ranking, when thier prestige are WC worthy.
italy, spain, czechs and usa are almost the last of the capable nations.

russians otoh capitalize easy draws against top20 sucky doubles players, without withdrawing too early.

Because those were basically the only two tournaments they played this year, weren´t they?
I know they lost one match to Kiri/petrova, too.

On the other hand, it´s ridiculous to allow someone like Grandin/Uhlirova to play while excluding GRAND SLAM winners (Kuznetsova/Zvonareva and Williams sisters).

I would say, ideally, the threshold should be at least 5 tournaments played together per season, then grand slams winners automatically (only pairs that played one slam together and then split, never played again would not be qualified.. or similar occasional partnerships).
So if Kuznetsova/Zvonareva play 5 tournaments together and win one slam, they are automatically qualified. If they play one slam and win it and never play a tournament again, then it would be weird for them to be there.

I prefer to see Grandin/Uhlirova there than just 4 teams with just 3 doubles matches for a YEC...

There´s also idea that some sort of juniors event should be added.

Which came first - the chicken or the egg? Since the YEC went to 4 teams, if a team, like Vives and Sanchez for example, saw they couldn't make it, they stopped playing together. Now, with 8 teams, teams will be committed to each other and play longer since there is more a likelihood they qualify.

I love the 8 teams RR for doubles. It is a joke that a team gets 1500 for winning two matches.

GS winners in doubles should be qualified automatically in this case

That's great!
YEC with 4 teams was pretty much a joke.

With full doubles RR and junior also that means that play would start like at 9am

That or doubles and juniors would be played on an adjacent court

I hope they change the race format and record only 16 tournaments, same with the doubles 52-week ranking make it 16 tournaments should include slams and mandatory if they played.

I agree. Still leaves room for four other teams to complete the eight-team field.

3 matchs for a Year-end championship is really pathetic. The 'tournament' is over before you know it. For sure on the WTA, the rank and file doubles teams are not that great, but for those who do play a full schedule, they deserve to play for a chance at this event. Also, do the YECs (singles, and the ATP too) have a rule about Grand Slam winners automatically qualifying? They could have that and with the RR, it gives teams that do not play together much an opportunity to get going with a couple of matches.

Only men have an official rule for singles and doubles. For the women singles, only the top 7 seven automatically qualified and the WTA reserves the right to give one WC

Finally! :bigcry: 10 years of suffering over. :sobbing:

This format just showed how little the WTA cared about doubles. Obviously it's never going to be as useful to the tour as singles but to completely write off half of the game was wrong and foolish. Good to see it's been put right.

I can sort of understand why it was 4 teams. In a way it made the race each year more exciting. But it should always have been a Round-Robin format + a final. Restricting the YEC to only 3 matches simply never made sense.

Great News! Should make the double YEC much more interesting

Wta introducing the rule that actually improves the tour and doesn't ruin it even more for once.

Great Move by WTA!! :worship:

They didn't say anything about the RR format in the article though, so it may well be a knock-off 8 team format so it still won't take that long.

I like it,

This year would of had been alot more exciting with MJMS/NLV, Williams/Williams, Zheng/Peng and Vesnina/Makarova for example :)
