Any idea on who will be on our team? I'm hoping for Martic, Vekic, Jurak and Konjuh (I think Miki isn't getting an invite after what happened last year).
We finally have a team that can compete with a chance to advance!

Should be that!
I really hope Jurak would be invited and accepts it.
Jurak/Martic is potentialy great pairing!
If they all would come Croatia wouldn't have to be afraid of any team there IMO.

Well, I don't think Croatia can get past Great Britain (Watson, Robson), Poland (Radwanska sisters) or Romania (Cirstea, Halep, etc.).

That's a little harsh! Despite the dive her career took, Mirjana is one of the best croatian players ever, and I don't see why people could not mention her.

Sorry, why would she?
And who the f are you to be that judgemental?
Mirjana's not only one of the best Croatia tennis players in history( to be honest only Majoli is better), she's also one of best Croatian sportswomen in history. She won two WTA tournaments and 2 WTA doubles tournament. She's doubles grand Slam champion, reached final in mixed doubles in Wimbledon and SF in singles. During all that time she promoted Croatia, and those were the days when Croatia wasn't ''popular'' or know in world in the way it is today. When playing for Croatian representation she won 12 matches and lost only one, always fought hard.

And what was she actually given in return? half of the media was writing crap about her in the start of new century and she wasn't given any help to come back(to tennis or Croatia). Not from Croatia, not from Croatian tennis. And it's not that they weren't able to find her sponsors, they didn't want to.
Mirjana's personality, interests, life story are all more than atractive to sponsors but she was given no help. She made it back on her own, she's not one of the best today but who knows if somebody was there to help her in Croatian sport in 2004 where she would be today.
But no, nobody from Croatia helped her, second best tennis in history of our country and one of the best sportswomen in history( frankly I see only Janica Kostelic, Blanka vlasic, Sanja Jovanovic and few other as more sucessfull).
So please don't you say that we shouldn't mention her name because she's given to this small country more then you will ever give probably. And if she decides to play for the USA next year, go Miki (you should have done it before). But knowing her, I don't see it happening.

All these strong teams don't have 2 great players, only 1 is good so it will depend on form also.
Hopefully our girls will be in good one! :)

Well fuck that chance. She's not the only player ever that didn't came. Many others did it more times and had no credit, she has some. And btw, she said she was injured and played Midland without training, just to get some matches. I believe 26 26 to Brengle does seem like she was injured

Nice to see someone opening this thread (kudos to "someone";)), cause after all these years we finally should have a really decent team in 2013.

That said, I'm still not convinced, although I am hopeful, that we'll get out of the zonal mud soon. Achieving that is no small feat, as there are many good teams in the same bucket and some pretty great teams struggle for years to advance to WG2. It would be fantastic if our girls could make it, but that'll naturally depend on many factors - team selection being one of the most important.

Somehow I think that we can't really count on several girls (Lucic, Jurak, maybe Abramovic too), but that still leaves us with a chance for a strong team if both Petra and Donna show up. Mrdeza could be a valuable addition in weaker encounters and Ajla, if healthy, could play an important role as well. Vrljic and Savic are IMO very inconsistent, Mekovec too inexperienced and the other girls are just not on a level which I'd at the moment allow in the FC team. If Jurak doesn't show up (very probable IMO), we could get a pretty good doubles player in Pandzic I think (has a 100k title from '08), so it'll definately be interesting to see what Majoli decides.

ma re
Dec 12th, 2012, 04:23 PM
Ana Konjuh looks to be in, based on what her coach said these days, which gives us at least something to work with.

I don't know exactly when will the draw be made, but looking at the list of participants in our zone you can't help but think that Romania, Bulgaria, Netherlands and Great Britain are probably the strongest candidates for winning their respective groups - assuming none of them will be drawn in the same one.

Looks like it's Martic, Vekic, Mrdeza and Konjuh this year, although I can't find it officially anywhere. If it proves to be true, sounds very good. That is, of course, assuming Petra gets to a good start in Melbourne and that Vekic's form remains constant. Both Vekic and Konjuh can be good in doubles, which is great cause Petra will probably get to play a lot in singles (as is expected). Mrdeza might be an interesting addition this year, cause she is known for giving a decent resistance and often getting the job done against girls ranked about the same as she is.

Really looking forward to February, but first thing's first...Melbourne. With all four Down Under it'll give us a better idea of what can we expect in FC.

Group A
Austria: Tamira Paszek, Yvonne Meusburger, Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, Nicole Rottmann, Jurgen Waber (captain)
Belarus: Olga Govortsova, Ilona Kremen, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Ekaterina Dzehalevich, Tatiana Poutchek (captain) vika wd
Georgia: Sofia Shapatava, Sofia Kvatsabaia, Ekaterine Gorgodze, Margalita Chakhnashvili (playing captain)
Croatia: Petra Martic, Donna Vekic, Tereza Mrdeza, Ana Konjuh, Iva Majoli (captain)

Well IMO Belarussians are the favs even without Vika, but we actually might stand a chance if Petra gets it together by then. But since that's not very likely to happen, we'll probably end up 2nd in the group and miss the chance to play for a place in WG2.

ma re

I wish I could be as optimistic. There are still many moonballers in the field and those can easily prove lethal for our youngsters. Of course, having Iva there will help them calm down and focus, but still it's quite a lot to ask of them.

Here's how our girls stand against this field (minus Paszek and her eventual replacement):

Mrdeza - Meusburger 1:1
Mrdeza - Mayr 0:1
Mrdeza - Kremen 1:0
Mrdeza - Shapatava 1:0
Mrdeza - Kvatsabaia 1:1
TOTAL 4:3

Martic - Mayr 2:2
Martic - Meusburger 1:1
Martic - Govortsova 0:1
Martic - Dzehalevich 0:1
Martic - Shapatava 1:0
TOTAL 4:5

Donna and Ana never played against any of these to my knowledge.

OK, some of these matches took place years ago, but it's still not nice to see some of the h2h's, especially in the light of Petra's recent form. We also don't have a great and experienced doubles player other than Petra. Donna never plays doubles now and Ana still hasn't played a professional doubles match.

Still, hoping for the best of course :)

Donna will find herself in a completely new situation - to be the team leader  A lot of pressure on young shoulders, that's for sure, but it could actually do a lot of good for her confidence as well. Yes, Jurak would be a good replacement considering she is not defending any major points until later in the month and would be an amazing help for doubles. Savic is probably out of the question cause she's already in Australia getting ready for tournaments and to cancel all that off and come to Israel would be asking for a lot. Vrljic wouldn't be of much help ATM due to her recent (in)activity and questionable form.

Btw, I haven't heard anything about a replacement for Martic either. Hopefully it's Jurak, but in case she can't make it, I think Vrljic would be the next best thing all things considered. But next week she is defending some points (a semi of a 25k) so I'm not sure she'll be available.

Just to stay at this level, for 1-2 years more is good. Many young girls coming through and forget Lucic, she is not the team player. Petra is needed, though she needs time for recover and training, and career progress. Austria are not so great, Georgia are okay and Belarus will be good. Donna lost to one of the Belarus players last year in a bad way, so this does not mean well.

crotennis2

Well if Govortsova is out as well, that certainly helps us. Still, there'll be some nasty draws for the youngsters against experienced defensive players like Meusburger, where Iva's presence will play an essential role.

Btw, anyone knows if there'll be live streaming?

crotennis2

Savic would be great for our team, shame that she won't play but she had that Australia tour planned long time ago. She probably didn't had any hope about Fed cup and that happened Ankara.

She will probably play in next occasion and I'm really looking forward for it.

So far in Fed cup we're leading h2h against Austria 2:1, also leading against Georgia 1:0 but we trail Belarus 1:2. Of course, this includes ties played 15 or more years ago with completely different player fields, but it's still official info. Also, we played in the group against Austria and Belarus exactly 2 years ago, when we defeated Austria 3:0 and lost to Belarus with the same scoreline.

P. S. Govortsova and Martic still listed on the FC website...

Yes, Majoli confirmed it a couple days ago.

Doubles is: Konjuh/Jurak vs Mayr-Achleitner/Meusburger :)

ma re
Feb 6th, 2013, 05:35 PM
So far things are going very well. In the first one Tereza gave it a good fight against a former top 70, and in the second Donna did far better than I expected to demolish Meusburger - the same one who is responsible for one of the ugliest WTA matches I ever witnessed, that error-fest against Martic in R1 of Bad Gastein last year. This was exactly why I was afraid for Donna in her match, because it's her least favorit type of opponent. True, this is not clay and Meusy is not as convincing on HC, but still, it wasn't a nice feeling for me before this match.

Now on to doubles, I believe our girls (Jurak/Konjuh - kudos to captain for that) can win this, maybe even very convincingly.

Congrats girls, a really important point against the Austrians :worship:

Now onto the next tie with Georgia. I'm actually not very happy about Majoli's choice for that one. I'd give a chance to Ana in singles, cause neither of the Georgian girls is ranked higher than 400 and I think Ana can handle them, especially with a coach by her side. I'd give Ana's doubles spot to Donna, cause she rarely plays doubles and this, given the opponents and a doubles partner, would be a great opportunity for her to play without much pressure. I'm pretty sure they'd win. It would be a slightly riskier choice than what she went for, but not too risky IMO. And it would give Ana some valuable experience and Donna a chance to give it a shot in doubles after a really long time.

Oh well, let's hope we the fans are again wrong and that the captain again knows best...;)

P. S. I see that there were last minute changes in the Belarussian team which is now represented by Kremen, Sasnovich, Marozava and Dzehalevich - so Govortsova really did pull out; feel sorry for her, happy for us!

is there any result that would seal our number 1 spot today? it would be good if donna and ana could get a break tomorrow. i wouldn't be surprised if the polish captain gave ula a day off...
we can't expect donna or ana to win against poland, but i think ana does have the better shot given that ula has struggled in both of her matches so far this week.
next up is doubles...important to finish it with a win in case the unthinkable happens tomorrow.

ma re
Feb 7th, 2013, 03:32 PM
is there any result that would seal our number 1 spot today?

I don't think so - Belarus beat Georgia yesterday and we took out Austria so that's...

Belarus 1 (3:0)
Croatia 1 (2:1)
Austria 0 (1:2)
Georgia 0 (0:3)

So now that we took care of Georgia the day will finish at either 2-2-0-0 or 2-1-1-0 but we can still lose tomorrow. It would be nice that Austrians at least win something today so that they mess up Belarussian's perfect score from yesterday, in case we are tied for points.

So no, everything will be resolved tomorrow.

So here's a crazy thought. If we get to play Belarus in a direct battle for the top spot in the group, could that somehow, possibly, maybe, hopefully get us onto the Center court? Not that I'll be holding my breath while there are the likes of UK, Poland and Israel "available"...

Up a set (6:3), down a break (0:1) - I mean really girls, this is not funny. Looks like someone started celebrating a little too early and this is where Majoli has to intervene and get their heads together.

ma re

So Belarus did win both of their matches matches, but if Sasnovich needed 3 sets to take out Mayr and Tereza lost to Mayr in a pretty competitive match, that says quite a lot. I think we're the favorites for tomorrow. Belarus is still to play a doubles match which might be somewhat important, but so far everything is going as planned.

Currently it's...

1. Belarus 2 (5:0)
2. Croatia 2 (5:1)
3. Austria 0 (1:4)
4. Georgia 0 (0:6)

EDIT: I was just browsing WG2 to see who is playing there this weekend, and among teams like Belgium, France and Germany, I see...Argentina? I mean no disrespect but seriously, if they made it through, so can we. In fact, most teams among those 8 look a lot like ours in terms of player rankings.

Well, I don't know Tereza personally, but if she is a reasonable person she'd go along with whatever the Captain decides. Of course we haven't seen the matches and I could be totally wrong about this, but looking from afar, that's how things look to me. But I'm pretty sure Majoli knows what she's doing and that she'll make the right decision. Now if only these guys would let our girls play on CC today...

It is Ana to play against Sasnovich and Donna against Kremen. Sasnovich is favorite against Ana I think as she is 369th player in the world and won both of her matches here. Tereza's rank is better than her, but still Iva has chosen Ana. I believe she has a reason for that. Maybe because Sasnovich beat Mayr and Tereza loss to her. Then Donna plays against Kremen (who needed 3 sets to beat Shapatava) and is about 150 places below Donna in rank so I believe Donna can beat her. Well, I think Ana has chances in first match, but still I'm afraid that in the end doubles will decide. ;)

...yeah, that was a good one  I hope you're right, but the chances for that to happen are very slim I'd say. HRT is already broadcasting Zagreb Indoors and tomorrow they're scheduled for both semis. But streaming should be available online, which is also nice.

Anyway, awesome fighting from Ana, really impressive stuff against a moonballer. Definately a great experience for her! Great job kid!

So it was a long day but the final win is here and the final point is won - congrats to the whole team for an amazing job. This is already a wonderful achievement considering we have a team with an average age of something like 17 yrs 2 mths  Today Glushko took a point off of Poland (against Ula) so who knows what might happen tomorrow. Of course, Polacs are huge favorites, let's not forget that. I'm a little worried about Ana, not so much in regard to the time spent on court, but more in regards to the type of match she played and the emotional effect this match definately had on her. She might be mentally drained after such a huge battle and unable to concentrate properly tomorrow. But hey, our job here is done already if you ask me, everything beyond this would be a huge plus.

By the way, this is Croatia's fourth tie won in a row (last year, they lost their first two round-robin ties but then beat LUX in the third RR tie and BIH in the positional playoff).

The team's longest winning run is five ties, back in 1992: http://www.fedcup.com/en/teams/team/profile.aspx?id=CRO ("Team Stats" tab)

Five ties won in a row :cheer:

...and here are Croatia's final positions in the E/A Zone Group I, beginning in 2009 (after it was relegated from World Group II):

2009: Tied for 5th (out of 15 countries)
2010: Tied for 11th (out of 16 countries)
2011: Tied for 7th (out of 15 countries)
2012: Tied for 9th (out of 15 countries)
2013: ??? (so far, at worst tied for 7th, out of 16 countries)

Croatia's team has already performed admirably this week--and watch out for them next year!

You should point that out not to confuse people - we here on the forum thought a few times before it's an official schedule

Anyway, I'm still under the impression of Ana's match yesterday, cause it was a genuinly unreal effort from a 15 y.o., not because of the quality of opposition but more because of the mental part of it. Really fantastic.

The morning session has just begun and we're not in it, so look out for afternoon folks. Btw, currently groups B and D are playing their last group ties, because of the rain on day 1, but I'm guessing our match will still take place today.

P. S. Did we just win the group without our #1
