Anne should. The Oz Open is usually the 2nd weakest after Us Open in terms of qualy cut-off, although in fairness the US Field is larger.

The reason is that its a very expensive place to travel, and many girls wont go as it isnt nevesarily benificial to turn up and loose in qualy round 1.

If Jane had managed to get to the very latter stages of the Oz 25k's she might of sneaked in, but i strongly doubt she will now.

Julie really should of beat Yi  she was so close. Can't see her ever repeating that again though :(

Ok thanx paul! I expect Anne and Elena to qualify and Julie and Lucie to make it to final round of qualifying and lose to Elena and Anne! ;)

Yeah, in that match against Yi Julie led 4-2 in the final set AND she had a match point at 6-5

lol, no disrespect to Anne but i'm expecting her to get thumped ;)

Lucie NEEDS to do well. She has 33 points from last year, plus another 10 from Canberra the week before, so if she has 2 losses she could slip to about 280!!!!

Elena got WC for MD...Anne got WC for qualifying round...I guess, Julie and Lucie will go through qualif...It will be great to see encounter btw Elena or Julie or Lucie against Angie from INDONESIA in MD...Angie has won twice vs Elena in junior level...so, it will be great to see how they play in senior level...Angie lost to Julie in Birmingham this year and Angie has won twice vs Lucie...Or maybe this time Angie vs Anne...

Anyway, best of luck for 4 of U!:) :D :wavey: :wavey: :wavey:

Jan 5th, 2003, 05:15 PM
Well they've all played matches now, and Lucie and Julie seem to be playing reasonably well. Anne played well too, as has Bally with some tough draws.

in 3 days we'll know who Looby-Loo, Jules and Kothy are playing!! :D

england_rules
Jan 5th, 2003, 05:17 PM
Knowing thier luck they'll probably have the toughest draw!

paul_masterton
Jan 5th, 2003, 05:19 PM
lol or they will face each other

england_rules
Jan 5th, 2003, 06:03 PM
The good thing about them facing each other is that you know one of them will win!

paul_masterton
Jan 5th, 2003, 06:59 PM
but one of them has to loose! ;) :p

Can I cheer for Kelly Liggan in here? Ok so she's not a Brit, but she's playing better than all of them IMO.

Vamos all of them, especially Kelly & Julie :bounce:

paul_masterton
Jan 5th, 2003, 07:34 PM
Yeah sure cheer for Kelly :D

Hopefully she can sneak into the draw if there are some more withdrawls.

Bally's better than Kelly! Hopefully they'll play frst round against each other and Bally wins! :p

Good luck to them, nice to see them somewhere other than Wimbledon :)

paul_masterton
Jan 8th, 2003, 09:34 AM
Well they have got tough, but winnable matches. It's a shame none of them got a nice 'easy' opener.

Julie Pullin GBR vs (16)Claudine Schaul LUX

Julie will have her work cut out against Schaul, who has played poorly the last two weeks. Hopefully Julie can get off toa good start and get the upset.

(3)Klara Koukalova CZE vs Kelly Liggan IRE

Very tough for Kelly, but she's playing well, so can win it definately if she plays her best.

Sandra Kloesel GER vs Anne Keothavong GBR

Anne's got the best draw, and i'm sure she can use it to her advantage. Hopefully Anne will get this in 3 sets.

Lucie Ahl GBR vs (19)Sandra Kleinova CZE

I laughed when i saw this. Lucie kicked Sandra's ass 6-1 6-1 in 35 minutes in the first round here last. Hopefully she can do teh same this time round, but it will be tough. A possible re-match with Maria gezenge who beat her in Us Open qualies awaits in round 2.

Good luck to all the Brits!!!!
Bally should go far if she can re-create her Wimbledon form, though she's short of matches recently so I'm only hoping..

I watched Bally's match against Stevenson yesterday....

Bally was very nervous at the start and had points to win the first 3 games, but ended up 0-3 down, that didnt help her nerves and she then fell 0-5 behind. Adter that though, she started to settle down and gave Stevenson much more of a fight in the 2nd - a great experience for her.

It was very tough match conditions as she was stuck on Court 18 which backs on to the railway line and is closest to the MCG Cricket Ground which is being partially demolished just now - so you could hardly hear anything for bulldozers!!! The wind wasn't great either. Stevenson was also playing very controlled tennis - not her usual hit and miss, but sensible tennis and waited for Bally to make the error at times...

Bally shouldn't be disapointed though as first trip to Oz was great experience and and good for her learning curve.
