Aga seemed to have major issues with Vinci's slice. Some of her shots that would force errors from most players were just easily reset by Vinci, and Aga couldn't redirect the slice effectively at all. I can see why they've had some tough matches in the past.

NOW that's what I'm talking about. Vinci is a good player with great variety, can't think of anyone who deserves it more. Disappointing for Radwanska but she looks very tired and out of form, maybe the injury did her good, but then again that's the result from an unwise scheduling.

Very unexpected outcome and very unexpected QF match at the bottom quarter of the draw.

:rolls: Can't decide if I'm dead or this gives me life. Roberta has the real game people claim Radwanska has.

That's true :) Roberta is the proof that I also like players who can play with variety and touch, not just strong baseliners. Her game is so beautiful, the forehand and service motions are nice and the BH slice very effective. This is great to see, real variety and still being able to produce winners from the baseline with the forehand. Roberta is a player with REAL variety, not that Radwanska-Niculescu fake variety.

Well done and good luck in the Quarters :)

I sort of agree. I think Aga is getting better and better with her all-court game and that she does that game well especially compared to her peers. The difference here is that Robi does not just do it well but she does is SUPERBLY. She has one-handed backhand and that makes the difference. One-handers basically ALWAYS have better touch and better volleys and slices and more guile than two-handers. Robi also has a nice heavy forehand with good accuracy. I think Robi is basically THE ONLY PLAYER that can beat Aga this way without it hurting me. I love Aga but it's not hard to see Robi winning because she has a great personality, great flowing classic game and she was clearly better. Aga must learn and MUST REST her shoulder, her mind and her body. Sara vs Roberta in the quarters is awesome though because they both have complete games. I think Sara might be too solid and quick but Robi will have a chance if she hits her forehand well and serves well so she can finish off points at the net.

Aga was TERRIBLE, so bad serve, so bad groundstrokes, so bad net play. Vinci very solid, but it's not like she should beat players of Aga's caliber, but she won so it's deserved. It's just about Aga's schedule: she played so many matches, she is really out of gas :( Hope she will take some rest and really play good tennis to end this year the way she started. But that win is so dissapointing, if it was against Serena, Vika, Masha or Petra, that's okay but against Roberta...:(

Lol and with that horrible first serve percentage too.

But to be fair, I think maybe Radwanska's shoulder was bothering her a bit, no? Apart from the usual bandaged shoulder, her serve was off and she had an agony face when she was hitting that smash she sent to the net.

Hope she enjoys her first Slam QF, maybe even SF, but to be honest i just know and I think you probably too if you don't hate Aga that if she is rested and playing good (not even great) tennis she wins against Roberta anywhere, anytime like it was in the past, but i'm okay with it, very dissapointed but it's sport and that's the way it goes sometimes. Roberta was very much the better player out there and basically did all the things Aga is noted for better than did Aga. In terms of touch, craftiness, racquet skills and imagination, Aga was very much the 2nd best player on the court today. I don't doubt Aga's shoulder had something to do with her subpar performance but even if she had been at her best, Roberta would have be very hard to beat. Totally deserved win for Roberta, and some magnificent beautiful tennis thoughout.

What is their H2H? Guess a lot will depend on Vinci´s serve placement and forehand penetration. If she find the court well enough with those weapons she should be able to end points at the net with her skillset.

Ding dong!

Aga showing the tennis world how not to manage your career.

It is really confusing why so many defensive-minded players feel the need to play so many tournaments. Is it the fear of getting figured out by other players, the fear of the inevitable(?) physical burnout and cashing as much as you can as quickly as you can? Wozniacki and Kerber are guilty even moreso than Radwanska.

I get the impression that if Aga recharges her batteries, heals her shoulder and is in a generally better frame-of-mind that next time they meet she will beat Vinci quite handily.

That reminds me, did anyone see that article about Aga on US Open official website yesterday, titled "Radwanska finds fun off court"? Such a bizarre turn of phrase. Who are they getting to write this shit?

"...
But American fans perhaps know her best for her run into the Wimbledon final, where she took Serena Williams to three sets after a thrilling comeback in set two. Her usually-stone face let its disappointment show after that loss, tears eventually dripping out of her eyes in pure sadness.
...
Aga admits to being as bad a self-picture taker as the rest of us.
...
Her laugh rolled out of her belly in New Haven when she did a video with Wozniacki, a close friend.
..."

I've always felt it's more because they're usually physically pretty resilient so they probably really believe that they can play a lot without burning out. I think there's maybe also the fact that they know they're less likely to get the really big tournament wins so they need to accumulate lots of QFs/SFs to maintain their rankings - kind of like they're applying their high percentage game style to their scheduling too.

After seeing (live) the way she was able to play and beat Shvedova, I thought she had a great chance in this match. I love her old school, smart, game. Really refreshing to watch.

well deserved victory for Roberta, she was better than Aga in every aspect of the game. Good luck against Sara.

Not sure what is going on with Aga. I thought it was the injury but she said yesterday her shoulder was OK. The way she played during the last month was the worst I have seen from her in three years. I can just hope this is temporary, can't believe she suddenly forgot how to play tennis

Now this is the real deal! Radwanska has some court craft, but she was given a lesson in it today. Beautiful net play by Vinci, it was so gratifying to watch that in a WTA match after forever.

Everyone should give Vinci credit. Her game is an absolute joy to watch, real skill there.

When she's playing fearless like she has these last few weeks she is amazing.

Vinci has probably the most entertaining tennis out there. I'm really happy for this result and I hope she can get to the semis.

Surely Radwanska was affected by the injury, but, with the big confidence she earnt in the last few weeks, Vinci wouldn't have been an easy opponent for her anyway.

So this is Vinci's first GS QF? A player of her talent definitely deserves it, so congrats :yeah:

When asked about how well Roberta Vinci used variety in her match today against her, Radwanska had the following to say: "I'm trying, as well. I think she just did this one better today."

Courrier admitted 2 weeks ago that he does not follow women tennis that closely, and yet he quickly anointed Vinci as the player with the best all round game.
MJF quickly responded by saying she thinks Aga has a better all round game than Vinci
