the 2012 USO Series ended with the Montreal / New Haven CHAMP Petra #1, the Cincinatti CHAMP NaNa #2 and the Carlsbad CHAMP Dominika #3

these were the three girls with the chance to win extra prize money for the USO and they are all out of the tournament now

the USTA is probably breathing a sign of relief that they don't have to spend an extra $1 milion

but it seems the truth is these three vultured too much :sobbing:

The moral of the story is: Never play New Haven.

It means the USO is very happy to pay some peanuts bonus instead of a whopping million dollar.

Serena, Vika and Maria didn't play much if any USO series tournament. if one of them would have played them it wouldn't be that top 3

Good thread. It seems that it's not that much necessary to play or excel in these warm-ups, if you wanna go deep at the US Open.

Serena played Stanford and Cincinatti and ended as #4 :oh:

Eventually, Vultures pay the price for vulturing sooner rather than later.

It says that "warm-up" tournaments don't always predict results at the Main Event.

This was an unusual USO series because of The Olympics. The medal winners didnt care about Rogers Cup/Cincy as much as a normal year.
Domi won a weak Premier before The Olympics.
Petra and Li had extra motivation because of very weak results last year. Those are very inconsistent players, especially in the US

Last year with Serena winning it was more normal summer.
Caro was winning titles 2 years ago and won it.

The Olympics will always skew it. The medal winners weren't going to focus on the USO preps

lol this, and the 3 medal winners are in QF (or going to be soon for Serena)

Yeah, and they barely played the preps. The Olympics mean so much more to them than those Premiers

Petra and Na should be given a good spanking for burning themselves out in the preps:smash:

I dont agree. Na and Petra are not vultures. They are Grand Slam champs but played too much in the preps.

Li Na didn't look tired at all. She was just comprehensively outplayed by an up-and-comer  if anything the Cincy final gave her a huge confidence boost after being so dire in finals this year.

In Ni La's case, she just ran into a buzz saw (Laura Robson), and/or underestimated her opponent, and it was too late, after she was already on her heels.

Na did play a lot of tennis (two finals in Montreal and Cincy), but she took the week off before the Open, and should of been rested.

Mabye it was the mental stress from the previous tournaments, coupled with an indefatigable Robson?

In Kvitova's case, she probably played one tournament too many in New Haven.

If it wasn't any asthma, then Kvitova was clearly mentally fried or physically tired, after such a shocking collapse (in total contrast to how she played a super clean first set).

Kvitova couldn't buy a decent first serve after the first set, which is very uncharacteristic for her. She also couldn't guide the ball in the open court anymore as well. Something was up. It wasn't typical Petra wildness or an inexplicable collapse to my eye.

Kirilenko could of been tired as well, as she played Kvitova during the finals of New Haven, and played a tough, up and down match that she lost to the Czech at the US Open.

Makiri had mentioned she was physically tired from the first set of the Kvitova final in New Haven.

She could of been mentally fried as well, though she didn't go deep into preceding tournaments in Montreal and Cincy as Na Kvitova had (though she did make the semifinals of the Olympics)

Cibulkova lost a tough match as well at the Open, but she wasn't going to make major noise there in the first place.

Serena was dead tired in Cincy, took the loss to Kerber, then got the appropriate rest. She's still alive, but maybe susceptible for a tough match and/or tricky opponent (possible Radwanksa or Kerber, if Serena's serve is not on).

So far it looks good. But the weather could be tricky for her (if it gets hot and humid again). Got a break when Kirilenko got knocked out.

The Czech-Andrea (don't want to butcher her name) should be fodder for Serena next match.

Kerber is still around, though she hasn't really played anyone so far. She lost the Cincy final to Ni La, but is still alive at Open. I don't remember what she played previously. And I think she dropped out or got knocked out early in Dallas after, which was good for her I guess. But she still could be vulnerable to a good, committed opponent.

We'll see?

She said she got a cold. She felt a bit tired and she didn't play well. She also said that Robson served quite well in that match.

It just says that the organizers of the USOpen series gets to keep their money this year.
