View Full Version : R4: Potential upsets?

(1)Azarenka vs Tatishvili

Azarenka is playing great tennis here while Tatishvili used week section to get to R4. Definitely not an upset material. Tatishvili should be happy to win more than 3-4 games.

(7)Stosur vs Robson

Confident young Brit is coming to R4 having beaten former Grand Slams champions - Belgian Kim Clijsters and first ever Asian to win a Major Na Li. Can she challenge defending champion Samantha Stosur? For sure she has the game but will she be consistent enough? Will she be mentally able to beat three top players in row?

(3)Sharapova vs (19)Petrova

Sharapova hasn't played any tournament between Olympics and US Open but is cruising through the draw. Petrova should be her first tough opponent in Flushing Meadows. Former world number 3 used to beat top seeds in the biggest tournaments despite the lack of expectations (e.g. famous Clijsters beatdown in Melbourne). Here in N.Y.C. she hasn't dropped a set yet, still she had some struggle against lower ranked players. Definitely can trouble the Bradenton resident but the upset is highly unlikely.

(5)Kvitova vs (11)Bartoli

Intriguing duel. Both players have abilities to hit their opponents off the court. In my opinion, the one who will survive physically the difficult weather conditions will make it through to quarterfinal. Bartoli hasn't been looking good through the last few months while Kvitova seems to be having a revival here in North America. The Czech won a lot of matches, already struggled in her first matches here. The fact this match is the last in Grandstand might help her. For me it's 55/45 for the French.

(12)Ivanovic vs Pironkova

Pironkova again comes as a dark horse in a Major - but first time in the U.S. Great serving Bulgarian will face the former number one who seems to be having lots of problem with her serve toss. If the Serb cannot reduce the number of unforced errors, she will have problem to make it through. However my bet is for her. She just needs a patience.

(4)Williams vs Hlavackova

The Czech has beaten already two seeded players here - fellow Zakopalova and Kirilenko. Her Russian opponent however didn't seem to be her usual self. She will be a total underdog during the 4th round match against Serena. I can't see her being any kind of opposition for the American unless the favourite bombs out mentally or gets herself very injured.

(6)Kerber vs (10)Errani

The match between two queens of defence. While Italian seems to have more variety in her shots, the German of Polish origin produces more pace and has more ability to produce winners. As both won't make lots of unforced errors, the one who will go to the net and make some good attack, should win this match-up. In my opinion, it will be Kerber who has been much more convincing here so far.

(2)Radwanska vs (20)Vinci

Another exciting match which could be either very equal marathon or a very short, dominative match. It will depend on who will dominate whom in very first points. If Agnieszka wants to win quickly, she needs to start her match confidently, cannot allow herself for a slow start. The Pole has a problem handling top spins, kick serves which should be used by the veteran from Italy. The match can go either way.

My bets:

Actually she did. Very much so.

The Robson/Stosur match seems most likely upset, laura is riding high on confidence with nothing to lose and she will have crowd support. Stosur will be feeling the pressure as defending champion.

Matches that cold go either way I don't call them upsets though:
Ivanovic vs Pironkova
Radwanska vs Vinci

I have the worst feeling Nadia's going to come out playing like a GOAT tomorrow :oNadia's a potentially tricky opponent of course but i think Maria will win. Aga may lose, not really good today and Vinci in good form.

Tatishvili over Azarenka- No.

Robson over Stosur- A chance obviously.

Petrova over Sharapova- No.

Bartoli over Kvitova- Highly unlikely, but Petra can always throw in a shit match out of nowhere, especialy on U.S hard courts, so an outside chance, but would require a really weak performance by Petra.

Pironkova over Ivanovic- Yes I think a fair chance of one here, although I still think Ana will win.

Hlavackova over Williams- No.

Errani over Kerber- I really dont think so. This isnt clay.

Vinci over Radwanska- A small chance only since Radwanska is coming off a bad summer hard court season, but looks alot better here.

Robson over Stosur: if Robson repeats her performance against Clijsters and Li, why not? Stosur quite struggled with Lepchenko in the first set and Robson has better serve and more powerful groundstrokes than Varvara.

Bartoli over Kvitova: if Petra has an off-day, itīs certainly possible.

Pironkova over Ivanovic Ana wasnīt exactly very convincing in her match against Stephens ... and she will be under additional pressure in this match, since itīs a great opportunity for her to make her first grandslam quarterfinals since 2008.

Errani over Kerber it can go the same way as their match at Roland Garros ... but I certainly hope itīs not gonna happen this time again. ;)

Robson can do it.
Bartoli probably wont lose so bad like in Montreal, but its matchup issue now for her.
I dont trust enough in Pironkova to finish her Holy Mission, although has some chance.
Kerber gonna beat Errani, although it can be tricky.

Top4 seeds are safe.

I'd say bartoli beating Petra is in fact more likely than the rest.
On her better surface and playing a vulturing HC season Petra

But ofc I want Petra to win

1) Vinci vs Radwanska: I think Roberta has a good chance given their current forms.
2) Pironkova vs Ivanovic: Could easily go either way so chances for an upset are there.
3) Robson vs Stosur: Chance for a potential upset but I still see Sam winning this. Depends a lot on Sam's mental toughness in this match.

Apart from these I don't think there will be any upsets (Petrova vs Sharapova could be a close match though).

bartoli over kvitty- I think the Czech hasn't been super sharp, although neither really has Bartoli. Either way someone will complete career set of QF's or better.

pironkova over ivanovic- I think Pironkova's forehand will pummeled, but if she can weather the storm her atheleticism might get her through.

vinci over radwanska- Roberta tends to crack in these moments of opportunity. You never know, she might just relax a little this time.

really even these upsets aren't super-likely. I do hope it holds to form a little, those quarter final match ups will be :hearts:

IDK about Vinci over Radwanska, but the rest are safe I think :)

Pironkova and Robson have the best chances, but I'm be careful about Laura - Stosur has different game than Li and Clijsters.
Maybe Vinci?

Pironkova beating VIP would only be an upset on paper.

The only one I could see happening is Vinci making Radwanska struggle. Errani pushing Kerber doesn't seem far-stretched either.

I think Errani could beat Kerber :oh: just because its Errani.

The only one I see is Nadia over Maria but thats just IMO.

I am hugely surprised that anyone really thinks that Marion can beat Petra.

I'm a longtime fan of Marion and her form is really really bad.

She won't upset Petra even when Petra his 70 errors.
