There is a girl in qualifying who's first name is tornado. I love that, i hope this girl makes it the tour for her first name alone

Any relation to Cara Black?

No, unlike Cara these sisters are actually black.

I don't know how parents can give their children such ridiculous names.

Tornado is a nickname. Her given name is Alicia.

Hurricane is a given name though.

Tornado is a nickname.
Are you sure? I've seen others say that it's a nickname but her official tournament listings use that name. Either way it's kinda cool.

I think that about some names. But then again they only sound ridiculous because they're not common. What I do cringe at is when people come up with some weird spelling for a common name. That and prefixing "Le" and "De" as a way to form a name.

Tornado is a nickname, but she is using it from the start.
It's a slightly exotic variation on some names of players, Conchita Martínez is really Concepción Martínez, but she used Conchita from the begining of her career, and there's a lot of examples.

Tornado is doing well in the qualification draw, Frenkel who was born in 98 too, scored a great win today. USA has a good generation of girls born in 1998

That's not really the same thing. Conchita is a known diminutive of Concepcion. Like in English Andy is a diminutive for Andrew.

That's not really unusual, I guess. You seldom see references to Petros Sampras. Always Pete. And when did you last see a reference to Andrew Roddick? These are mere abbreviations, sure, but the principle is the same - use what they use themselves.

I don't have verification but I'd guess that Sampras' name was legally changed to Peter.

It's not the same. A recognized diminutive is still a legal (official) name. A nickname is not. It may well be the tournaments (especially non-pro tournaments) don't care if people use nicknames but so far no one has provided any examples on the pro tours.

There is, as one might imagine, a story behind the girls' unique names. Tornado's given name is Alicia, but when she was 2 years old, she already was hitting the ball so hard and so powerfully that she was given the nickname Tornado. It stuck. A few months before Tornado's third birthday, Tyra Hurricane -- that is her given name -- was born. But the girls always have been known, both with family and friends and on tournament draw sheets, as Tornado Ali and Hurricane Tyra.

Peanut Louie Harper (http://www.wtatennis.com/player/peanut-harper_2257889_4565) had a given name Mareen, not Peanut.

Well, not tennis, but the PGA had no problem listing Eldrick Woods as Tiger Woods. Way cooler name.

Maybe Woods and Black should hook up, just imagine a Tiger and a Tornado in bed together ...
