I have no words. So incredibly happy and proud of Laura :sobbing:

Laura didn't let anything put her off- even the ridiculous decision from the umpire to replay a point which Laura had CLEARLY won and would've put her a break up in the 3rd. Laura has shown so much maturity this week and I can't describe how happy I am. I can remember watching her in a junior event at Eastbourne, destroying everyone at just 14. I don't know what Zejlko Krajan has done with her but her serve has gotten SO much more consistent in just a few weeks. And those returns :inlove: I am so f**king proud of Laura, she's proven she can beat the worlds best.

GO LAURA- the first British Woman to reach the 4th Round at a Slam since Sam Smith in 1998 :woohoo:

Would be amazing if Robson emerged from the section with Azarenka, Stosur, Clijsters, Li :haha:.

Seriously though, if she serves like this and hits that forehand like that, who knows? Very sweet reaction at the end. As for Na, terrible mental effort towards the end. When someone beats her at her own game (and this is a rare match where she did not just hit herself off the court), she has no answers.

Sean.
Aug 31st, 2012, 05:41 PM
This was huge for Laura, she backed up her 1st big win, and was incredible mentally after letting the 2nd set slip & getting a couple of bad calls! So impressed. Finally served well in the 3rd & it made the difference!

Another big test now: it will be interesting to see how she handles Sam's serve & TS!

 Na, I'm still sad despite supporting Laura. Carlos still has a lot of work to do, wasn't great from her!

by the way, where is Na-Mug?

Aug 31st, 2012, 05:42 PM
I admire so much her fortitude in the 3rd set after the disappointment of having lost a close 2nd set. Even though she didn't really choke in that 2nd set, so many young players would just fall like a cheap tent. I thought she would, but she did not. Li Na didn't play badly at all, apart maybe from the last games when she just lost it mentally.
It's great to see talent like Laura Robson finally scoring big wins. I havent seen much of her before this tournament (just one full match against Ivanović last year) and I didnt really get the hype, but she deserves big applause for her performances in this US Open. She has everything to be a big player. Well done and good luck in the next round. I think it's within reach too...

pov
Aug 31st, 2012, 05:42 PM
Outside of the team events, the nationality doesn't matter much to me. Still it's good to see Robson begin to emerge. Great play from her in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Hopefully there won't be the usual over-hype that players often respond to by wilting. And yeah . .okay . ... it would be kinda cool to see a Brit in the mix.

Even when Na went through some a amazing phase where she couldn't miss and was serving 80% at the end of the second Laura stuck with her and almost took it.

Then after that rediculous call in the third Laura went full GOAT mode and Na just had nothing.

Who was it that tried to say that Laura would struggle to break top 50 a few weeks back?

What did the umpire do?

To be fair it was the linesmans fault too, basically Laura hit a shot that Na had no chance of returning to put her a break up in the third, but the line judge called it out when it was clearly in and the umpire failed to overrule. Laura challenged succesfully but the umpire ruled that the point had to be replayed, in the end however Laura got the break and never looked back.

She was on the end of some other poor calls too which the umpire missed.

Laura said in a radio interview a few days ago that her movement improvements are because she's been working with Andy Murray's fitness coach for the last few months, and if anyone can teach you how to run around a tennis court...

Two dozen WTA players should have that guy on speed dial. He could make a fortune with players like Lisicki, Görges or Pavyluchenkova.

Oh and Laura you can lose to Stosur now, itīs totally okay not to complicate things for Vika after you made them easier.

I think people need to stop attributing everything good to the coaches. Na has only started working with Carlos. Laura has only started working with Krajan. Am pretty sure nothing can have happened in a few weeks. It might just be the 'Gosh, thank God I dont have to see HIS (insert old coach) face again' factor for all you know.

It was Andy Murray's fitness coach who was being given the credit rather than Krajan.

And playing mixed with Andy at the Olympics was a huge boost too.

I am delighted Laura pulled this off, Li Na has been in great form, but she didn't seem her usual free hitting self today. Laura hit so well and more importantly, so consistently! Her serve had a few of the wobbles we saw at Wimbledon, but was a real weapon at times and her movement has improved beyond belief! We are used to good sporadic play from her, but 2 great performances in a row? Surely too uh to hope she can make it 3 and beat Sam, but I think she has so much more belief and I guess that Olympic medal played a part. Let's hope she can build on this and make a serious move up to the top 20 and stay there.

I really though Li Na had a chance to be a surprise challenger for the title, but she looked flat today. Maybe she needs to be able to rant at her husband to get her going, whereas she's not going to do that to Carlos....yet!

Yeah, isn't Krajan considered to be scam?

I donīt think you can really question his success with Safina or Cibulkova, but the question is whether his intense personality and hard training doesnīt wear out a female player quickly physically or/and mentally. You see it with team coaches all the time. They are great motivators and can push players above their limits and maximize their potential, but they usually have no longevity once their motivational act wears out.

Went out just after that 2nd-set tiebreak, with Laura's level slipping a bit and Na showing some uncharacteristic grittiness, and assumed Laura would crumble in the decider. SHOCKED to come back and she pulled it off in the last set, comprehensively. She really doesn't seem to be affected by pressure/expectations. I think she's like Kvitova not just in terms of game, but also in terms of personality - quite laid-back, has perspective on life, and doesn't view matches as life-and-death experiences. Which can be a shortcoming in this sport in many ways (it's well-documented that Laura was pretty lazy for quite a while until this year), but in other ways is a positive - how many times have we seen young players burn out in recent years because they were raised to think tennis was ALL that matters, or for them to choke away matches because they're so terrified of losing?

I always questioned her attitude, because she was unbelievably slow and lazy on the court. Apparently something has clicked and she has started to work on those weaknesses with great success. I already praied her for that a few times in the last months, seeing the changes. But even with the right attitude it wasnīt a given that her movement would improve that dramatically. Iīm sure some players with poor serves practice them every day and they donīt get better. Now that we have seen that her bad movement and footwork were more about attitude than "talent" for it, she can maximize her ballstriking potential.

I'm not sure her "chokes" up til now really were chokes. The Schiavone match at Wimbledon for instance, it seemed more like a loss of concentration than an out-and-out attack of nerves (and she also didn't seem arsed enough in the decider to actually fight fully, even though Schiavone was so unconvincing that she might well have pulled out a win if she'd just been as gritty as she has been this week).

And, until recently, she was doublefaulting CONSTANTLY in all her matches regardless of whether it was a crucial stage or not

The odds on Na to beat Laura, given what this talented young woman did to Clijsters, were outrageously in her favour. Based on what, I wondered? (big bank for me, cha-chinngg!) I mean, look how Bouchard - another newbie to the senior tour - ran her ragged and pushed her to 3 recently. Laura is young and gunning. She has nothing to lose. Stosur has to be nervous about this kid: she is the defending champion, and Na Li and Kim Clijsters are bigger talents than she is.

So many posters on this forum are surprisingly myopic. I think especially with the Age Eligibility Rule you are very unlikely to get a Hingis type teenage prodigy any longer. The system just doesn't allow it. Many players are developing later, although I wouldn't call 18 late necessarily.

Laura has bags of potential and I think there are many areas she can improve. Even if she loses next round this is a big step for her and she can build on it with the expertise she's got around her.

Why is Robson suddenly showing some results rather than potential?

Perhaps those practice sessions with Pova and working with Murray's team in preparing for the Olympics demonstrated to her how hard Pova and Andy work before getting to competive matches. Maybe she reealized she's got to put in the work to get the results. Something Donald Young, for example, has yet to understand.

Also she gets a coach who is known for his hard nosed work ethic and expectation that his player will work harder in practice than in matches. Robson could be in a very good place to continue to flower.

But, it all is dependent on Robson to put in the work, hard and grueling work, on the practice courts, day after day. If she does that, then her future could be very exciting.

So pleased for Laura! After a miserable start to the year, she really started to come alive during the grass court season, I was lucky enough to be courtside to see her play Martinez Sanchez at Eastbourne and Sharapova at the Olympics. She has improved so much, her serve and movement are much better, she has some killer returns of serve. No-one can argue with beating USO GOAT Clijsters and then one of the pre-tournament faves Na Li back to back; as she said in her interview, she is finally stringing together good tennis for the whole match, something she wasn't able to do before (cf Schiavone loss at Wimbledon). Add to that her really surprising summer semi at Palermo beating CSN and Vinci on clay, and we have a player who has potential on all surfaces.

One of the great things about Laura is that she plays her best on the big occasion and on the big courts, and with this result, she has now secured a top 100 ranking for the year, no matter what happens, so she can just relax and try to keep the form going and see where it takes her over the next few months. She certainly has nothing to lose against Stosur, who has shown herself to be mentally fragile in pressure situations since her US Open win last year...

Brilliant!! :worship:

I think theirs a couple of mini tournaments coming up after the USO so she could take part in them. I'm really excited to see how she copes at the AUSO seeing as it's also a hard court.

If Laura can beat Clijsters, Li and Stosur IN A ROW, and only be in the QF of a slam, there is no justice! This is the draw from HELL.

Great to hear she is doing so well!

Really happy for Laura :hearts: Sad for Na, but she deserves it for collaborating with that man,

 Yea because tall, slow, unathletic flat hitting aggressive baseliners do so well against Serena.

Come on, that is going TOO far.

I think she has a chance to beat Stosur but I don't think she will beat Vika. She and Serena are the two who I say Laura has little to no chances of beating. I would have put Maria in there as well but she played her tough at the Olympics and still think that first set bothers here where she had chances.

Shame and disapointed. Again the draw is opened for her and she cannot take advantage of that.

Both played great at the first and second set. But Na gifted the first set to Laura by hitting all possible UEs in that game either to the net or outside the line. And then a tough second set which two played great. Na changes her service quite sometime to get some free points at last.Na stepped out in the tie-break and hit a deep shot and take the third. Didnt watch the third, but it seems that Na from 2-1 to 2-6. It should be like Na playing like a mug and hitting rallies to the stand or net the following 16-30 points. It should be disgrace to what she played in the previous weeks. Spraying errors everywhere? What a gift. :o

Carlos should continue the changes to Na, get those first service freaking in, but not clipping the net all the times, and improve mentallity. I mean she is calm in the second, but what happened in the third? :o

It is a really breakthrough tournament for our future star Laura Robson though...

And by the way, what's the point of winning the second set if you want to go shopping right now...

Hm. Very suprised and disappointed with Na Li.
After Montreal and Cincinnati this is a huge upset.

Again and again. Na Li is the most unpredictable player of all unpredictable players.

At least she lost to a young player who is on fire.
Another great match from Robson,
i predicted that she can't play on high level again at this tournament, but she did.

This is so true...

longtin23

According to TF that is vulturing.

Maybe you should lay off Aga and others who gain their results the same way now that Na is benefitting because of her consistency across the whole year.

OMG. Isnt Rome, Montreal and Cincy are mandatory or something like that. So everybody on tour are vulturing...

Draw from hell for sure. Clijsters/Li/Stosur just to reach QF?!

This almost rivals Serena beating Seles/Davenport/Hingis back to back to back to win her first U.S. open.

And then Vika/Masha (or Petra)/Serena (probably) if she's going to win (she won't). Draw from hell indeed.

Except the end where the quality improved, this was a horrible match. Li was hitting long every 2nd shot and Robson was making "forced errors" whenever she slightly got pushed out of position.

Still great to see a youngster winning though. But I don't think Robson has any chance against Stosur...

NaLi is such a wildcard. She can play absolutely brilliant sometimes and then she can lose to everyone. I think she is a bit overhyped. Congrats Laura, she can really challenge Stosur with this play.
