Slava is definitly the worst choker on tour. Shes never going to get to top 20 anything soon with a head like that sadly. Absolutely dominated this match, then whenever it was a big point you could almost guarantee she'd hit an error and she duly did every time.

Had *3-1 30-0 in the last set too.

Shvedova is extremely overrated. Hopefully TF has learned a lesson.

Congrats to Roberta she played a great match.

As for Slava the margins between winning and losing deep in a third set are very thin and you only need to drop the level of your play a few percentage points and against a quality opponent, like Lisicki, Williams, Kvitova or Vinci that is enough.

It's cruel and it's painful but that is the reality of tennis at the highest level.

There's no question Slava has been getting tight at the close of third sets and she is just going to have to work very hard to find a way around this problem.

Again, she choked. It's holding her back big time. She's probs going to go down as a player who had the ability to be a top player but doesn't have the mental strength to do so.

Lets not kid ourselves, its not like Vinci did anything special to win the match. Slava would have lost that against anyone with her play. Which is why Im in serious doubt shes ever going to achieve anything significant in singles. The good players find ways to win even when they're playing poorly.

First set was great, dominating Vinci from the back of the court and approaching the net nicely and finishing points off, looked in complete control. Played a poor game at the start of the second to get broken, had break points in the next game but Vinci saved them, match went with serve til Slava broke back and led 5-4*. Vinci played a great game at 5-5, then Slava had 40-15 to make it 6-5, played shit afterwards and was broken and Vinci served it out easily. Broke easly in the third and led 3-1 30-0 before hitting 4 errors and letting Vinci break. Slava broke again to make it 5-3, opened that game to serve it out with a double fault and the rest is explanatory. That put away at the net at 15-15 that she hit straight back to Vinci was a huge point.

I can see how some interpreted this as bbjpa calling Roberta a scrub. But actually I don't believe that is what bbjpa suggested at all.

I believe what he/she was trying to say was that it was unfortunate that two players of the quality of Roberta and Slava were having to play in the 2nd round while in other parts of the draw much weaker players were destined to reach the 4th round. I could be wrong, but I believe this is the correct interpretation of that post.

Oh well, their head to head is 3-2 for Vinci... Roberta won the last 3 matches, but Dominika is still 2-1 on hardcourts and is ranked higher than Roberta... I'll put my money on Vinci, but I think it's 55% Vinci, 45% Cibulkova, not 80/20.... maybe I am being a bit too cautious because I really want Roberta to win but I don't want to have too high expectations! ;)

Vinci is not a pusher at all. She has a very complete game of TENNIS not just ballbashing. She can hit some big shots but she is mainly aggressive by taking her chances to get into net. That takes more skill and guts than just shooting from the hip and hitting big shots.

it always is when you favourite loses, isn't it?

Well in Slava's case, 90% of her loses are because she chokes.

I wonder if there is any way for her to sort it out though? It's not like she's a young player who may grow mentally when she gets older, She's 25 in a few weeks. I would like to see her have more killer instinct, and finish matches like this off. She seems to lack confidence in her self at times, and Her game just tightens up so badly on big points because of the pressure and lack of confidence. You would think that she would be better mentally, being a 2x Grand Slam champion, even if it was doubles.
