My heart was in my mouth throughout the whole of that 2nd set.

OMG Laura :sobbing: :sobbing: I am so proud and so happy. Laura played so f**king well. She held her nerve (even after that smash at 5-5 30-30 in the 2nd set and the 2 MPs at 6-5 :hysteric:) and this is such a well deserved win. Okay, I'm crying :sobbing:

It's fitting that Kim went out to a young star. She's had such an amazing singles career and I wish her all the best in the rest of her life.

I CANNOT WAIT to see a highlights reel- this was such a great match.

I knew Kim wouldn't go far at the USO after her poor showing against Duval. Really impressed from Laura again, probably the best match she has played! No shame for Kim to lose to probably one of the next big name in tennis. Funny how Pam Shriver was kinda all choked up interviewing Kim....I sure hope Kim wins the mixed double! TBF she has no chance in women double with flipkens.

We'll really miss Kim I think, more than Henin or Davenport or Capriati.

Incredible match from Laura. You can see all the work she's putting in is starting to pay off.

Better serving, better returns, better movement. And when she steps in court and hits her forehand her opponents are under massive pressure. And the great thing is that you can see she can still improve.

I am so sad at this moment in time, it has bought a tear to my eye, perhaps I am sad I dunno but this lose hurts for me as a kim fan

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l9qsujMoUR1qb1hwbo1_400.gif

here comes the essay...

My favourite player on the WTA the first player I ever saw at eastbourne and she won and I knew then I would always be a fan and follow her, there have been so many highs and lows, I admit I have followed her comeback more as I am still quite young and tennis was not my thing in the early 2000s. Yes she has give us her loyal fans some grand slams and played some amazing tennis. I wished she had played a full season and I wished she would carry on and the fact she lost 2nd round today is not a way for her to go out.
Kim has amazing athelitism something that is rarely seen on the court thesedays, she also has amazing speed and she always fights, my favourite moments where the Oz open this year it was spectacular the way she won all those matches, I loved it when she won brisbane and donoted the prize fund to the childrens hospital, I wished she had won a wimbledon she deserved it and a french the clijsters slam would have been magical. I will be lost without the belgian tennis star now and I wish all the health and happiness in the world. I am still in shock that its over and cannot quite believe it, I hope she can somehow pull herself together and do well in the doubles but who knows. I would also like to say I have no respect for any of the trolls in here that come and say good bye bitch or anything like that, because this is a distinguished career that is now over and for some of her die hard fans that will be so hard to take. If anybody reads this then I thank them for taking the time...

Goodbye Kim I will miss you so much and enjoy your new life off court

Aug 29th, 2012, 11:43 PM
Kim's game is nowhere the level it once was, but her defensive game since mid 2nd set showed that even on her last match ever, she's still the best defender in the circuit.

She will be missed. Great personality, one of the last real champions we still had in the circuit.

However, it was great to see Robson playing so well. Let's hope this is a breakthrough and not an once-in-a-lifetime performance like most players who "defeat for the last time a top player" use to be. Remember Benjamin Becker crushing Agassi?

very sad in seeing Kim go, but Laura played superb tennis and looked the more experienced player out there... How many times did Kim get burnt by serving second serves to Laura's forehand side? I cannot believe that Kim could not realize that Laura was smoking her with the forehand down the line shot... Laura, on the other side, quickly realized that Kim's forehand is the shot that breaks down under presssure and hard pace, and just pummeled that side with hard hit shots that would eventually cause the error... Farewell Kim, and best of luck, you will be missed..

CONGRATS TO LAURA!!!

I'm gonna miss Kimmy. Venus and Serena are the only two original big babes of tennis that is left.

It's so funny how that Carillo, Martina, Chrissy, Pam, MJF, and all of the commentators use to DOG Richard, Oracene, Venus and Serena for NOT playing a full schedule. Martina would always say that they were NOT committed to the game and that they had too many outside interest and it wasn't good for tennis.

Now years later all of the girls who played all of the tournaments year-after-year have burned out years ago and had to retire, and the two young ladies who they criticized is still in the game playing.

Venus and Serena have gone to college and gotten degrees, started multiple businesses and is still playing tennis. Richard and Oracene were geniuses in the direction they mapped out for Venus and Serena. People called Richard a quack and said he was crazy, well look who has lasted and gone through the test of times.

I'm gonna miss Kimmy because I was there and witnessed FIRST HAND when Venus and Serena came onto the scene and changed the way tennis and doubles are played. Everybody is playing tennis and doubles Richard Williams way. the mid and late 1990, the early 2000s-mid 2000's was the best tennis ever because the entire top 10 players were all good at the same time. Even the those ranked 15 and higher was good.

I'm so honored that I got to watch Venus, Serena, Seles, Ana K, Hingis, Lindsey, Jen, Pierce, Amelie, Justine, Kim, Kutzy, and a few others give us the best tennis matches that had the audience out of their seats. The regular tournaments were even good. I really miss this group of big babe tennis players who were fearless and took no prisoners, especially Venus and then Serena followed.

Bye Bye Kimmy you will be missed, and congrats to Robson now please build off of this win and not lose to a lesser player in the next round.

Why does everyone have to be nice? Clijsters should not have played this year (though she was in good form in Australia), she was doing mockery of the tour with skipping all the warm up events and wanting everyone to treat her like a serious contender to the title.

So yes, this R2 is a fitting end to this sentimental trip to NYC and this part of her career.

To me that seemed like a changing of the guard, a past champion reaching the end of her career, being deservedly beaten by a young girl just starting hers, a potential future champion perhaps?

I've been a big fan of Laura for years, she has a natural gift, not many girls out there can hit the groundstrokes and serves she can, she's also for me one of the more likeable girls on tour, always smiling, never arrogant, and very personable.

It was a shame for me to see so many criticise her when she was just 16/17, her movement was a concern at the time and still is to a lesser extent, but she'd grown a huge amount in a small space of time, and suffered injuries as a result, even after she took Sharapova to a tie break at 16, people were quicker to criticise her movement than to accept how good the rest of her game must be to make up for it, she needed time to adapt to her new size, and you can see that happening every game, her movement across the court has improved tenfold and because of that she can constantly dominate points, as we saw today.

As long as she keeps working hard I don't see any reason why she can't be a top ten player if not better.

Actually though, for Kimmie's exception athleticism she'll miss me personally ; these ridiculous defenses she pulled in the tie-break in full extension really makes realize that there isn't going to be much of this in the coming years especially with players like Robson taking over -- I often argued pre-2009 with Debby on the french forums how she was an over-hyped player but actually from 2009 I actually kind of watched her with different eye though she was a part-timer.

Clijsters might regret IMO, she could have done much better in the 'weaker era' of the WTA when Wozniacki, Zvonareva et al. was the only competition she had. I think she could have won a major outside HCs.

My god, exactly.

I don't dislike Clijsters but I've never been a huge fan either. She has millions of dollars in prize money, a great career including 4 grand slams and many fans who will look back on her career fondly.

She didn't get the perfect send off this tournament, so what? You can't always guarantee that. And Kim has been at best semi commited to tennis for a long time now.

I have never seen her return so well and I am so proud of her no matter what happens against Li, this was her best match in all her time as a pro.

Kim Clijsters... where to begin. Well it feels upsetting that we'll never see her on a singles court again but life moves on and for me she has been the nicest, most inspirational and one of the most talented tennis players ever to grace the WTA. She will be sorely missed but we will all remember what she has done for the game. I think all TF should have respect for the person who she is and the career that she has had.

People will always look for the next big thing, if only to claim be the one who has insight and can predict future champions once the hyped player finally achieves something.

We were having a good debate until your personalised it... there was no need for a low blow like that, I never insulted you...

Oh well we move on.

Oh hell, nothing personal about it at all - apologies if you read it like that. It was just an observation as others have commented on it before. So I guess the point I'm making is we all get annoyed by what people write in here and we can't all have it our own way.

Where the hell did Laura get a forehand like THAT. On the run, too! Amazing performance. Sad for Kim, she'll be missed. Great stuff by Laura though, WD.

Laura Robson, you better grow into a GOAT player in the future, otherwise this ending just sucks for someone named Kim Clijsters.

Goodbye Kimmie! What a shame she had to lose against Robson in her last professional single match though. But you just felt like she wasn't enjoying herself anymore on the court. Have a great post-tennis life Kim! :D

Pigster's "come on"s after Laura's unforced errors were pathetic...

Am I the only person who found the level of play in this match mediocre, I switched to watch Venus/Serena in the doubles midway through.

It certainly wasn't a classic.

I was so torn about this match! On one hand Robson played brilliantly, but I also wanted Clijsters to go really far since it's her last US Open....... I'm a bit disappointed, but now I just hope that Robson can make it really far, she really played beautifully.

Thanks for the memories Kim.
It was a long journey but I've enjoyed every moment of it.
It's crazy how someone you do not know on a personal level can bring you so much joy and tears.
No shame going out to a player who played out of her mind.

Wow there are at least 3 or 4 posters in here who keep typing "Robinson" instead of "Robson."
It's an in joke. Not 100% sure I'm in on the joke, but it may date to Ken Thomas calling Robson's first match on radiotennis.com at the USO WQ in 2009.

No, it definitely wasn't. I was actually confused why people thought it was some amazing match. For drama, yeah, maybe. But Kim was spraying simple errors for the entire match.

Robson's ballstriking has always had big potential IMO, I guess it was only a matter of time before she would get a first big win. Considering the limitations on her movement though, I'm surprised a player like Kimothy wasn't able to expose such a weakness. Oh well I suppose everyone saw the near-retirement collapse of her game coming, she's been playing like shit ever since Australia.

I applaud her fans for their loyalty because I think I would be pissed off at her part-time schedule, even looking like she doesn't care about the matches she has to play 50% of the time.

Finally, good riddance.

She´s a great person off court and a 4 time slam champ, we have to give credit where it´s due. Hopefully she´ll have a happy life after tennis, if she doesnt end up playing in Melbourne

Anyway, Laura showed the tour doesn´t allow anymore part-timers bullshitting her way to slam titles like she used to do in 09-11. Now it´s more serious stuff, and she didn´t crumble emotionally like many did with Kimberly. :worship:

Nor do I, but I've been wrong before  I hope you realise that I'm not going to let you live down that Usain Bolt line BT ;).

And I'd have given the match to Kim on paper even if Robson was in great form going into the match. Shocking on so many levels.

Thought Laura would choke after Kim held for 4-4 after some opportunities to break, then that missed smash at 5-5 30-all on Clijster's service, when Clijsters saved those two match points, and then when Clijsters got a mini break in the tiebreak twice. Impressed by Laura's forehand down the line to get her final match point.

Glad Clijster's singles career is finally over. She's so overrated.

I can't lie, I'm glad Kim is gone. Truth is, I don't like parttime players. The tour needs players who are committed to playing their best all year round.

But having said that, Kim is obviously a very nice woman and it is clear she is very respected amongst her peers, and I will bet she is a damn fine mom, and a great person to hang around with. And over the years obviously she has contributed immensely to some magnificent tennis matches as well.

I do wish her the very best in her retirement but I don't think I really need to wish anything for her as I suspect she has a great and very happy future ahead of her. And yes, as others have said, a great champion like her deserved a better send off. I was expecting a big cake and some gifts or something like that. Oh well.

And yes, very nice win by Laura and she is making some very good progress now. Her movement is much improved and as things stand, top 30 or better looks very realistic by this time next year.

Good Luck Kimmy and I hope she and her family will have a happy life and love to cherish.

I've been waiting 4 fucking years for Laura to break through, and she had to do it not against Schiavone or any of the other scrubs she's choked away Slam matches to in recent years, but she had to do it against Kim. :o Atleast she had the sense not to do it against Maria.

Earlier this year I thought Kim might actually end up playing again next season, but sadly it's become clear over the past few months that physically her body just won't let her play the type of tennis that allowed her to get such a great career anymore. Was really rooting for her just to pull through that match, because I think she would've really loosened up if she'd just got through to the 3rd round (she was so much more tense on key points today than she has been for most of her 2nd career, probably because this would've been the last match at the tournament that she would've felt she HAD to win)....but oh well. Atleast she managed to go out with some great tennis towards the very end, rather than the rather tame way she looked like she'd be exiting when she was down 2 MPs in the 6-5 game. Have a great life

Tomra Daleson moving better than anyone could've ever thought she could. And also showing she can be quite gritty when she puts her mind to it.... I wouldn't be TOTALLY shocked to see her winning 1 or 2 more matches here. I'm not sure she's the type to feel pressure really, she always seems so lost in her dreamworld that I don't know if she'd feel it.
