Go sisters!

I only followed the last few games on live-scoring but one of the sisters was down 15-40 on her serve. Glad they still got the bagel!

More significantly, Serena sprained her ankle. Ankle was mummified and in a big cast, apparently. :scared:

Was it definitely a sprain? I saw it but didn't think it was that serious.

They started slow , but really picked it up and their opponents helped them a lot too  so happy Vee's serve was never broken :hearts:

I doubt it's serious--she moved along fine after the tapping

Venus at the net and serving :yeah:

She was borderline useless returning today, not sure what to take from that. Serena was sharp, at times.

Did just enough. Well done to the American girls, I'm fb friends with them and they were HYPED for this match, glad they could start as well as they did! They'll be happy!

Venus' served was very slow. I am wondering if she was saving it for her match tomorrow or if her back is injured again. Serena moved fine after the ankle injury, but she won't know how it really feels until she wakes up in the morning.

Didn't see the first set, Serena seemed unhindered by the taping so i'm not too worried, i hope venus returns better tomorrow against kerber

I hope they're both 100% for their singles matches.

I think Venus was going easy with her serve. Was there. She did crack a 113 mph fault, but there was really no need to let the bombs loose today. At least I hope she was going easy.

I always feel bad when the entire stadium yells "Serena!" and Venus is just minding her own business. Then there's the one fan who's like, "...Go VENUS!"

There were tons more Come on Venus' today than Serena's. And I said none for either.

You are right Uranium,

Venus was preserving her energy for tomorrow's match. Some may say that she was useless today because Serena had to do most of the work. Well I saw the match and both did what was necessary. Besides, Venus did all of the work at Wimbledon and the Olympics so Serena could "preserve" her strength for her important matches.

Venus needed to let Serena do the majority of the work today because she needs to reserve her energy just in case she has to go three sets with Kerber on tomorrow. Venus needed to be wise with her energy. Besides, it's just the first round and if Venus and Serena can win without having to exert too much energy then that's what they need to do.

Everybody knows that Venus and Serena can blast anybody off of the courts when they feel like it. Today's opponents didn't require them to do that. They won in a manner that was needed. It was just their first match and the crowd knew that they were gonna win.

The other two girls had something to prove, not Venus and Serena. The other girls had to keep mixing it up, and with all of that they lost the first set and got bagled in the second set.

First set was really fun to watch. Lee-Waters and Moulton-Levy weren't scared or walking out like they had no chance, unlike even some of the top doubles teams on tour. Venus and Serena had to step up and they certainly did, but some of the rallies in that first set were amazing.
