When the US Open MD WCs were announced a few weeks back, people complained a lot about some of the USTA choices:
- Melanie Oudin
- Julia Cohen
- Bethanie Mattek-Sands
Oudin and Cohen have had a very good year (WTA title + final, respectively) but have been slumping a lot this summer.
And fact is, they did not last very long in the tournament:
- Oudin lost to Safarova 46 06
- Cohen lost to Rodionova 36 06
- Mattek-Sands lost to V. Williams 36 16

Promising youngsters were ignored, despite being able to improve their ranking drastically this year:
- Grace Min (l. to Cepelova 16 62 46 in Q1)
- Shelby Rogers (l. to Sevastova 67 36 in Q2)
- Samantha Crawford (qualified and lost 36 67 to Robson in 1r)
- Jessica Pegula (l. to Castano 62 46 06 in Q2)
- Lauren Davis (l. to Glushko 62 46 36 in Q2)
- Madison Keys (l. to Ormaechea 46 26 in Q2)
- Maria Sanchez (l. to Kr. Pliskova 36 67 in Q3)
- Taylor Townsend (DNP)

What do you think the USTA should do next year? Should they trust their youngsters and give them a better shot at shining, would they have been better choices?

Queen Bethanie fully deserved her WC. She was just the unlucky one who drew Venus Williams. Any WC would've been thrashed today as well as nearly any player (including numerous seeds and various top 10 players).

I (being a biased toad) think their biggest error was not giving a meagre QWC to Chak!!

if they keep giving Hewitt WC everywhere, don't see the problem here

The "promising youngster" wildcard slot was taken by Victoria Duval

Ditto.

But isn't the biggest controversy in Mixed Doubles? This from Vania King on twitter:

@queen_v21: So ridiculous that @jesselevine7 and I could not get a WC into the @usopen in MXD ..winning in 2010 and finals last year isn't good enough

My god, I hadn't read about that - that seems like an astonishing oversight by the organisers.

I agree with the chak WC it was suprising they did not give her one.
