Draw was just released about an hour ago. Lucie is in the much tougher top half but in section 3 (Sharapova's section).

(19)Petrova
Gajdosova
Halep
Benesova
Cadantu
Wozniak
Oudin
(15)Safarova

Not too bad of a draw if you ask me. Could have been A LOT worse.

My thoughts: this is a terrific draw and at any other tournament I'd be pleased. But Lucie is just a different player at the slams so I don't expect anything big. I'd be thrilled if she has a big run though. It's possible but her last matches at the majors have just been such a bummer that who knows.

By the way it looks so weird to see her as the #15 seed at a Grand Slam

It's stranger to think that just a month ago we were wondering if she would ever break top 20.

Yep and who knows, Sharapova hasn't had a great preparation (and who knows, she might choke on one of those new candies ) But baby steps...

Every time she has a good draw, she plays badly... I dont expect anything big but please dont lose to Oudin, it should be played in TV court, I dont want to see her losing to someone I hate

Davodus
Aug 23rd, 2012, 07:50 PM
As long as she doesnt lose to Oudin  that would be bad. Wozniak R2 is dangerous and Petrova has been a tough player for her so it's not the best draw..but tbh with Lucie at slams the draw means nothing.

Her only good tournament lately was Montreal where she took the advantage of home court and kind draw but thats it

All I'll say is that one match at a time and Petrova is a bit of a nemesis for Lucie.

This, too. :help:

I just took a look at Petrova 's recent results. She was horrible in last 2 tournaments - losing to Bertens and Makarova. But still it means nothing, When she is off Lucie can lose to anyone

She could lose to Halep tbh, wouldnt surprise me. But that's irrelevant to Lucie really, she needs to win 2 matches for that and she hasnt done that in 3 slams this year :sobbing:

From Tennis.com

Each day during the U.S. Open, Richard Pagliaro will preview three must-see matches—and offer his predictions. (For the men's Day 1 Three to See, click here.)

Louis Armstrong Stadium: Lucie Safarova (15) vs. Melanie Oudin
Head-to-head: Safarova leads 2-0

Set aside the fact that Safarova is 90 spots higher in the rankings and consider the circumstances at hand. The left-handed Czech was three points from the Montreal final, holding a commanding 5-1 lead over Li, when she collapsed and lost six straight games. Collateral damage from that gut-wrenching defeat could leave the Czech short on confidence against the feisty Oudin, whose best moments have come at the Open: She became a brand name in the U.S. with her inspired run to the 2009 quarterfinals as a 17-year-old, then partnered Jack Sock to win the mixed doubles title last year.

Oudin trains at the National Tennis Center, has been living in New York, and if she can get off quickly and apply her intensity to get the home crowd, involved she has a shot for the upset. Ultimately, Safarova has more weapons, and her lefty cross-court forehand to Oudin's weaker backhand wing is a winning pattern—if she can keep calm. It's tempting to pick Oudin, but Safarova has been in better form recently despite that train wreck of a loss in Canada.

The Pick: Safarova in three sets.

Some of her comments after the match:

"It's always difficult to come to the first round and play well straight away," said Safarova. "Breaking her serve in the first game was very good for me, and then after the first set, I was able to relax a bit more and go for my shots more freely."

"I had a great summer," said Safarova. "The goal was to get as many matches as possible, and I did that, so now I just have to get ready for the real test here these two weeks and play my best tennis."

http://isport.blesk.cz/clanek/tenis-us-open/129134/safarova-ma-formu-misto-berdycha-ji-pomaha-vzhuru-bojovnik-kung-fu.html so this is an article about her current boyfriend, and it seems he has actually been doing a lot of her fitness training...

This is the summary from Kristyna on twitter:

in the article is she said she knew she will do it yesterday ( after she lost 2nd set to wozniak) it says she went to have a celebration after cincy after she cracked top20, she lives not far from ny. thats cool. she says most importantly she is helathy now. but it aint no accident. already a year is her boyfriend Kristián Bajza who did kung-fu. he is also today her fitness coach (lol that must be weird) and she heards compliments how much her movement and health got better. her boyfriend has learnt her new exercices and although she doesnt go to gym, she feels better than in the past. nor martial art nor box she doesnt apply. box just when my boyfriend makes me angry. she laughs. she thanks him that he is good fitness trainer and physio. but she doesnt want to talk specifically about her practising methods. that are simply things I havent done ever before. but I will take them for myself.....

Hi, never posted here, but I`m a huge fan of Lucie :D

I love her game. And she seems like such a sweet girl too. So happy she made it to R3 of US Open. Because her results at Grand Slams this year have been very poor: only R1 of Aus Open, R2 of French Open and R1 of Wimbledon. It`s really time she achieves something big again, like QF of Aus Open 2007. Next match is vs another fave of mine, Petrova. Very excited for this match, both are amazing players with a lot of talent. But unfortunately mentally weak. I hope Lucie and Nadia will show a high-quality match. May the better player win. Both deserve to be in R4 of US Open.

The most annoying thing is Petrova didnt really play well besides her serving, and Lucie came back from 4-1 to 4-4 in the 1st and had *4-3 two GPs in the 2nd...if Petrova had just been too good then fine, but she wasnt.

SO Horrible, Lucie had to lose against that MUG !

Davodus
Aug 31st, 2012, 08:48 PM
Also she had a good chance to get another career high at 16, but now she has to hope Petrova and Vinci lose to get that.

Im not bitterly disappointed because it's easily her best slam this year, but it's annoying given that she had a lot of chances...and Petrova is one of the only 17-24 seeds that actually made R3. So it wasn't a good draw at all.

But Lucie was not great actually... We should be happy for a R3 after so many terrible loss to someone I don't know, and she is so close to top15 now, let's look forward the Asian season and see whether she can make it

That's the problem, she wasn't great when she needed to play great.

Asian swing could be ok, because she may get seeded and have chances to win a couple of matches with nothing to defend. But I wish she'd play one of the internationals next week :o she could so easily win one of them.

jasonbloom
Aug 31st, 2012, 08:58 PM
She was not playing great in all her matches in USO, Nadia is a former top3 player, she is not like Oudin who will hit error all the time, I mean, this lost is bad but not that bad compare to her GS record... Now I only hope that she can be mentally stronger when her ranking is getting higher and higher.
I also really love to see her winning another title, but she seems not entering any MM this year, so maybe the indoor events are most possible chances

Wert.

This wasnt a good draw. In the beginning it looked like it is. But there were Minella, Tatishvili, Parmentier, Pironkova , Soler ,Burdette. Its kinda sucks to see some of these will r4 instead of lucie :tears:

Exactly, that's the problem and that is Lucie in a nutshell: she has this inability to play the big points well. She was in god mode on her serve in the 2nd set and when it came to consolidate the break: double fault and choking. When it came to serve to stay in the match: rinse and repeat.

Lucie :awww:

It was a close match, Petrova played the important points better. Ending the match with a DF is poor, Lucie has to improve mentally. Why is she always so nervous at the end of sets? Suddenly the serve falls off and the UEs creep in. The talent is there, but Lucie must learn to play consistently at a high level.

Overall we should be happy Lucie reached R3. And only lost to Petrova, a very good player. This is her best result at a Grand Slam this year. Remember Lucie bombed out in R1 of Aus Open and Wimbledon and in R2 of French Open.

Robert-KimClijst
Sep 1st, 2012, 02:52 PM
You knew that double fault was coming. You can tell Lucie is still mentally shaky, bu I have to say this tournament was a big step up compared to her previous slams. She played okay tennis, Petrova was just solid. Lucie should definitely be somewhat encouraged by this slam. Still, she needs to focus on peaking at the slams now. It is important as a top 20 player.

Davodus
Sep 1st, 2012, 04:28 PM
Yeah she needs to at least make consistent R3 and some R4's, she cant be losing to some young player just because they have a good day. Thats what happened against McHale and Bertens. But she definitely got over a huge mental hurdle by making top 20, and I think ultimately it could help her. I also think winning a match in the fed cup final would help her immensely.
