View Full Version : 2013 Doubles Partnerships

Given the breakup of Peschke/Srebotnik, I thought it would be interesting to speculate about other potential pairings and pending breakups amongst current partners.

Assuming Peschke is retiring at the end of the year, who will partner with Srebotnik in 2013?

Jerem

Maybe Petrova with Srebotnik? Apparently they had to play together a few years ago, but Srebotnik injured and the partnership didn't occur. In addition, they played in Montréal last week and reached the final, so it wouldn't be surprising.
If so, then Kirilenko will play with another player.

I think the Radwanska sisters will team up, maybe Jans-Ignacik/Mladenovic too as they said after their win in Montréal that they hope to continue playing together.

Errani/Vinci, that's not in doubt I think
Dulko/Pennetta and King/Shvedova probably, as the Olympics are past now.

I thought maybe Srebotnik/Vesnina. As I thought Kiri/Petrova was to continue, but maybe not.
Makarova/Vesnina may have had success and she could go back to Mirza but I think Srebotnik could work well for her.
I would like to see Schiavone/Pennetta continue but I don't think it will. Especially since Suarez is going to disappear again.

All interesting opinions and thoughts on partnerships.

I agree that Dulko will likely retire so not sure who Pennetta will play with in 2013.

I dont know who Srebotnik will partner with either given the breakup with Peschke. Not sure who will be the best partner for her and who is available.

I wonder if Kirilenko/Petrova, Vesnina/Makarova, and Mattek-Sands/Mirza will remain partners.

I dont think huber/Raymond will stay together in 2013. Not sure with whom they will partner.

I think the Czech teams and Eranni/Vinci are a lock.

I think the big question for 2013 is what Huber will do if she and Raymond split up? She burned the bridge with Petrova and Srebotnik doesn't like her, Mirza/Vesnina/the other Russians are clearly not an option. Everyone else has a regular partner. She likely won't be able to get anyone in the top 20/anyone she has a real chance at winning a Slam with. Will be interesting how she handles that.

Huber has been individually the best doubles player for the last 5 years and is still #1. No way does she struggle to find a partner if she and Lisa split up.

I would actually be more worried for Lisa's future success if that were to happen (Lisa is my favourite player, but her entire career revival has been since playing with Huber - before that she was nowhere near to winning slams or being #1).

obama08

I hear you Dave but I think that the tables have turned since Lisa and Liezel teamed up last year. I think Liezel's level of play has dipped quite a bit and she seems to be struggling with the big moments whereas Lisa has played well consistently.

I agree with CoryAnnAvants#1 that HUber might stuggle to find a partner. Her reputation precedes her and I think that there are few personalities out there who could deal with her approach and style especially now when her play and fitness level isnt what it used to be.

I guess we will see soon enough!

I seriously hope you're playing dumb.

While Sam was having her health issues, Lisa got fat and started scurrying around for partners to suck with. Dropping out of the top 20 and looking unhealthy. It was Rennae that helped her get that fitness together, but it was Tony and Liezel that helped get her game together and to where it is now. Before Tony and Liezel, Lisa was practically not in GS favorite talk in her post-Stosur era and not really close, despite having good slam results with Stubbs (Stubbs was far too inconsistent and lacked power for them to win a slam).

But I agree with obama that Lisa has now eclipsed Liezel and Liezel is holding her back from even greater things.

Huber/Peschke maybe? And Raymond/Srebotnik ? That would be an interesting little exchange. I definitely think HUber/Raymond is coming to an end though - their form is dropping since peak (late last year, early this year) and the Olympics is behind them so they may as well play with others. Good to hear Lisa wants to stick around another year though :).

Dulko retiring . Hopefully Pennetta keeps playing with Fransexa then! Although they didn't have the best results… I called it that Dulko/Pennetta was over at the beginning of the year :p.

Dulko is not even in singles TOP 200 anymore.

I cannot see neither Huber nor Raymond having trouble finding partners, regardless of how nice they are / aren't. This is a business. The problem is to find a good partner, someone that is committed to it week in, week out. A lot of the doubles specialists are already 'taken' and it is rare to find a singles player that wants to commit to playing doubles.

If Huber/Raymond do well at the US Open, they'll keep playing another year, I think. If they don't, it will be interesting to see what they do. It is a small playing field out there.

I wouldn't mind a Huber/MedinaGarrigues reunion... they did quite well when they played together some years ago... ok, they lost their first match in Madrid, but they were able to beat teams like Benesova/ZahlavovaStrycova, Azarenka/Zvonareva, Dulko/Pennetta at the French Open... and to reach the SF there, winning a set to the Williams Sisters...

Why on earth would Petrova/Kirilenko split up. They have had a great year and are clearly great friends. Plus the fact they are both well ranked singles players means they can play the same singles schedule and team up.
Also they may end up invaluable to the Russian FedCup team if they play.

I don't think they get along that well. Lil Masha was mad when Naughtya was so happy to win bronze (rather than gold) in the Olympics and they always seem a little bit pissed at each other on court, although it clearly doesn't affect their results.

Still, this is a HUGE mistake and hopefully they will realize that quickly. Also, it's very strange that both are primarily singles players yet they have both chosen doubles-only partners. That never really works out…

I read it on here :tape:.

I remember someone said they didn't think they have the right on-court chemistry and their personalities don't blend but they are definitely good friends. After their win at the YEC, Maria K said how she was so happy she won her biggest title with Nadia.

Petrova cited they were sometimes finding it difficult to stay fresh and get motivated for doubles as they're both still singles-oriented players so they opted for partners who are through-and-through doubles specialists to take a bit of the burden off them.

Then ol moll Huber (if she plays) has a few good options based on some shorter term and positive reletionships she has had in the past... (it is funny that the short term ones she seems to have maintined a good relationship with her partner but the longer term ones (Black, Petrova) end in tears (wonder if Raymond slagging will start soon form Huber?)
Anyway, as it stands, huber could reunite with
MJMS (esp if NLV isn't ocnfirmed)
the other top Spainiard, Medina (imagine if those 2 playesd and broke up, it would be a slag fest!!)
Mirza
Mattek Sands

If she decides to continue, I suppose Huber/Medina Garrigues could be a possibility. They've had some good results before and I don't think AMG has tied down a full-time partner for next year.

Not entirely sure Benesova/Strycova are going to play next year. Huber/Medina would definitely be a strong team and Istanbul worthy, but the problem is that their games don't match well in the Slams. Clay is Anabel's best surface and Liezel's worst, and then Anabel would drag Liezel down on grass at Wimbledon. I think Huber/Mattek-Sands would be capable of winning Slams though.

I wonder if Nuria and APS would reunite or if that partnership was broken once Nuria went back to MJMS last year. Besides, Arantxa playing next year isn't really a sure thing at the moment either with the direction her results are heading.

Mattek/Mirza would be great. If not, I don't see who Bethanie could play with.

Guess it depends on how serous Beth is about salvaging her singles career. Is Sania going to play the lower level WTA events Beth would prob be going to when she herself seems done with singles and has a chance to win good titles in doubles..

I think Llagostera Vives/Mirza is the best option for both of them. They've had some very good post-USO results and both of them are pretty much full-time doubles specialists these days so their priorities are the same. Parra seems more focused on trying to get her singles ranking back up albeit without much any success while Rodionova is pretty much doing the same so Mirza seems like the logical choice.

Rodionova and Nuria did well together, maybe them. Huber and Zheng are free agents too I believe.

With Yan Zi making a comeback, that could be who Zheng ends up with.
Wildcards, shouldn't be that hard to comeby, especially on the Asia/Pacific swing.

As for Huber, I hope she learns her lesson and is nicer to people. I think she will go for a clay-court master like AMG, I think she wants RG to complete her set, then she can call it quits.

I think Liezel/AMG OR MJS would be a strong team. They may not win a GS but would definitely go far in GS. They would have a chance of making the YEC as well. Either one of these Spaniards would be a better fit for her than Raymond. Liezel needs someone with consistent groundstrokes and returns. Raymond has neither. (Though great attacking game). I think Raymond is making a good choice with Kirelenko. Also a YEC contender. Someone younger and willing to learn the art of doubles. Why can't Nadia keep a partner?

No one asnsered before- Medina and Nuria? Played 1 or 2 times, chnace they could play again?

So we have

Hsieh- agian maybe with peng?

Apart from the ones I've bolded I don't see any reason that those partnerships will happen.
Strycova has confirmed Georges.
Erakovic/Watson I expect to play together if Watson plays doubles.
Petkovic I doubt we will see on the doubles court, especially if she has to qualify.
Mladenovic/Jans Ignaciak should play together.
I think this would be an acceptable Olympics line up.
I would like Kuzzy/Bepa to play together but if either isn't 100% they won't.
Stosur will probably play doubles in Oz, probably with Dellacqua.
Pennetta and Huber are the big doubles players who appear partnerless. Each other is the obvious choice but who knows.

According to 2012 rules...it says that SR is valid for 1 year from the date she returns back to competition (can be used for 8 tournaments in total including 1 use for Grand Slam)

To be eligible for SR the player needs to be out with injury/illness for minimum of 6 months (maximum of 2 years) plus must have been ranked Top 300 in singles or Top 200 in doubles at the time she stopped playing.

If you want to read further here is the link to the WTA Rules (SR mentioned from page 233)

Flavia and Sveta are going to slay. I remember watching the 2012 AO R3 match between Pennetta/Dulko and Sveta/Bepa and thinking how great would it be if Flavia and Sveta teamed up. They were by far the best players on court and had to string their partners along. Can't believe this is happening :cheer:

Probably nothing but rumours and unlikely. They one is playing Auckland, the other one in Brisbane. Have seen those posts on twitter.... But looked more like "hopes" ;)

Well it's Wickmayer what do you expect. Even if she is playing with someone she is bff's with it will still be like that.

Lisa Raymond is now following both Maria Kirilenko and Ovechkin on twitter. :sobbing:

The only issue i have with them partnering up is that they are both not explosive players, but as doubles specialist as the doubles game itself they are one of the best. The good thing about them is that neither of them are a headcase.

"Huber calls this the hardest year She hasn't had a regular doubles partner, as the woman he had planned to play with all year, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain, has been injured and now has decided to take a break. Martinez was nice enough to come to Paris and play with Huber, but they lost in the first round. Now Huber is on the hunt for a partner again and may play at Wimbledon with Spain’s Nuria Llagostera-Vives, who is coming off a wrist injury."
