Vika basically won this on her own. :worship: Max's groundies, volleys, ROS and net coverage were shit. Only his serve aided in their victory. But well done to both of them. :hearts:

MIXED DOUBLES GOAT. :hi5: A gold medal on top of two grand slams already.

What a great year Vika is having. :hysteric:

Pretty close after that blow out in the first set. Couple of DF at the end from Robson but it was Murray who screwed up missing on Azarenka's second serve

Congrats to Belarus.

Those two double faults from Laura made the difference. Still, HUGE effort from her and Andy to get to the final.

Only the second gold medal from Belarus these games though  And nice that Max the flag bearer finally wins gold.

Why not? Murray has Singles Gold. She will be treated like a champ and she held her own as good as you can ask from her, given where she is coming from.

Well done for Victoria -- Robson really lost the plot in most of the super tie-break. I'm deceived for Murray, that'd be a second Gold medal (ugh, didn't really know who I wanted to win really) but he has the one in singles and that's all that counts. :) GB was playing very well in the first set, super-motivated and all but Victoria really is a great champion winning the gold medal by herself. Mirnyi just wanted to show how much talent and mental fortitude she has.

Thank GAWD that Laura "I should be so lucky" Robson didn't win!

That would have been not only too much luck for a scrub but also we would have been inundated with a barrage of false credit and praise towards her and snooty denial of the plain and obvious fact that she was carried away not just by any man but by the best ATP player at the top of his game.

Laura was the luckiest British athlete ever for 3 reasons:

1) lucky to be PERSONALLY selected by Andy Murray to be his partner (it was his choice and his alone - not LTA's or any other British sports entity)
2) lucky to use that selection as a trampoline to become an alternate and to go on and participate in the singles
3) lucky that Murray is playing at his absolute peak best ever form (hence he steamrolled over Fed)

She was already in on a doubles wild card which got her the singles spot, Andy didn't decide to definitely play mixed until he went out of the doubles. She got very tight but other than that she played pretty well. Stosur, Kaz & Mirnyi all played worse matches.

How is that lucky? It's luck that she's the only active British female to have played mixed doubles with Murray and had some measure of success? That's not luck, that's Andy Murray choosing to play with someone that he knows he can do well with and judging by the silver medal he made a good choice.

2) lucky to use that selection as trampoline to become a singles alternate and to go on and participate

You have your timeline backwards. Laura was wildcarded in to play with Heather, this made her an alternate for the singles and to play with Murray, and was as high up as she was because she got to the semis in Palmero. You could make the argument that Laura was lucky to get wildcarded in in the first place, but even so your case is ropey because A) Heather was equally lucky to get the same chance and B) she got into singles as an alt and into the mixed off of her own performances.

3) lucky that Murray is playing at his absolute peak best ever form (hence he steamrolled over Fed)

That one I grant you. Does raise the question of why his brother Jamie wasn't able to get carried by the same Andy Murray though. It also requires you to overlook the fact that Robson didn't just stand there and do nothing all match. She fucked up and was largely responsible for the loss but she also scored points, returned balls and set up Murray to do the same.

Luck isn't always the reason that people you don't like succeed.

Even in tennis, where Spain always won a medal since it was reintroduced to the Olympics in 1988 there were no medals these Games

You could make the argument that Laura was lucky to get wildcarded in in the first placeYes indeed, whichever way she got the Olympics singles spot, in any case it is clear that it had nothing to do with her singles performance :p

Yes, whichever way she got the Olympics singles spot, in any case it is clear that it had nothing to do with her singles performance :p

Except that it did have a lot to do with her singles performance; at Palmero. If she hadn't gotten to the semi-finals there she wouldn't have been the second alt to enter the singles competition and someone else would have been in her position.

He really stepped it up in the second set (not only gamewise but also in strategy & tactics - in fact that is where they were able to have an edge over "Laurray".

Awesome Vika and Max. Really enjoyed the match and I think Laura and Andy will be more than happy with the silver medal.

Robson/Murray will be back in 2016 with a serious chance to medal again. Mixed really suits Robson well. She has a good serve (most important for the women), decent volley skills and she doesn´t have to cover that much ground in mixed. Doesn´t hurt that Murray is kinda good. You could really tell the difference between him and all the other men in the competition.

She didn't need to be in the singles competition to be selected for mixed doubles. As soon as she got the mixed wildcard, she was eligible, and I'd be amazed if they hadn't already decided who would partner Andy long before Palmero.

Robson, DO NOT read any tabloids in the coming days. Brutal.

What exactly are you trying to say here? Britain has nothing but admiration for Robson's efforts and, given the way she played, you wouldn't have been able to tell she was one of the least experienced player in the draw. Very admirable and Murray complimented her returns in the post-match interview.

Maybe YOU'RE the only one who has an attack dog mentality but don't project that onto other people never mind a whole nation.

The British tabloids thrive on negativity, and Laura was quite clearly the weak link on the British side of the final. If not for Andy winning gold, or this had happened in any other match they had they'd be spinning this as her costing Andy a medal and crucifying her for it (see also: Beckham's red card). As it is most of them will stick to the positives. Team GB got two medals in Tennis, Andy beat Federer for the gold.

Yeah, the Daily Mail will most likely portray her in a very bad light as they loves to trash people, especially women.

I felt Robson did well in the mixed doubles. The only thing she failed at is big points. She crumbled under pressure and produced DFs on important points. Her body language was extremely negative after losing points. Otherwise she was hitting better than Max throughout.

Max, on the other hand, was able to shine at big points only (he won the 2 BPs in the second set). Otherwise it was all Vika who did the work.
