Well done sisters. Venus carried the team most of the way.

Agreed. I think Serena was deservedly tired. Only 4 aces for the match for the Williams sisters.

Tough day for Kirilenko. She loses the bronze this morning. And she out of the doubles competition in the afternoon.

At this point it would be good for her to walk away with something.

This was a tough match for the Russians. Both sets could have gone either way. The WIlliams sisters have not been pushed like this all tournament. I think the Russians fought off 6 or 7 match points in set 2. The contest was closer than the straight set victory makes it appear.

Also, Serena is now playing to become only the third player to win Olympic gold medals in both singles and doubles at the same Olympic Games, after Venus in 2000 and Helen Wills Moody in 1924!!! :woohoo:

Serena was definitely not all there. Venus has made a bunch of important points. She missed some, but not nearly as many as Serena did.
Let's hope that after the celebration and good rest Serena steps it up for the finals.

To some degree, but at the same time the Russians didn't get a single break point, and the Williams sisters won 80-65 in total points. The Russians did well to hang on to serve but even if they managed to push either set to a tiebreak, I had little reason to think they'd pull those out.

The Russians did break each of the Williams sisters at Wimbledon this year, but they were both serving and playing much better today. I still think Maria & Nadia are the 2nd-best team in the world, and I hope they can at least get the bronze tomorrow.

Venus' first serve completely unreturnable throughout the whole match.

What an historic Olympics this is turning out to be for Serena: winning career Golden Slam and double Olympic gold in one Olympics (possibly); matching Venus' Gold in singles and (possibly) her double gold in one Olympics as well.

It is understandable if Serena wasn't as sharp. I'm sure with some well deserved rest she will be much sharper tomorrow. Just happy that they were able to pull through. One last match girls. Does anyone know if we will get to see the finals on US TV?

Yeah, and Serena understandably, sleepwalked thru the last match with the Italians too. They do make a perfect team, with Venus returning from the ad court firing backhands and Serena from the deuce court with forehand rallies. Devastating.

Things to watch for are Venus holding serve, if they get bright sunlight tomorrow. People talk about Venus' serving yips, but the fact is the yips are not random, they are related to her confidence in her toss, which can be thrown off by wind, but more problematic - Sun. She, it seems to me, from years of close observation, has very sunlight sensitive eyes. Its why she insists on wearing that ugly visor all her career. If she has to toss into the sun at that noon hour, she'll give away points thru DF's. That was why she lost to Kerber in singles, and it bears watching, if the match is tight. If the roof is closed. It's a wrap. USA wins gold. It's probably a wrap anyway, but you know...

But she wears the visor always, sun or no sun, even indoors.
