Stephanie Cohen-Aloro (French WC)
Samantha Stosur
Rachel McQuillan
Bryanne Stewart
Christina Wheeler
Amanda Grahame

I'll be disappointed if Cindy Watson is given a maindraw WC as she has been in absolutely dreadful form, and is really not worthy of it, but they could give her one for reaching the 3rd round last year.

French Wildcard probably Cohen-Aloro, Pin or Golovin
Asian Wildcard is Akiko Morigami

Aussies

Evie Domimikovic has one - her chances have improved for direct entry with Hingis an unlikely main draw player now!

Samantha Stosur for sure

The rest are hard

Cindy Watson will most likely get one for last performance, they always do this and give a player the chance to defend their points.

Bryanne Stewart, I think she may be contemplating retirement or is injured! She hasnt played the 2nd lot of Aussie challengers, her wildcard is very questionable!

Christina Wheeler, Amanda Grahame and Rachel McQuillan will probably get them. Rachel and Amanda on their good aussie performances and Wheeler cos she is a favourite of Tennis Australia and beat Kournikova at French Open

It wouldnt surprise me if a wildcard might go to Christina Horiatopolous or Casey Dellacqua.

I think Mirielle Dittmann deserves one for her years of dedication and her consistent Aust Open qualifying results the past two years!

So yeah my list is

Evie
Stosur
Rachel
Grahame
Wheeler
Dittmann

A lot will depend of course on who does well the first 10 days of the Aussie summer lead-up events!

louloubelle
Nov 27th, 2002, 09:55 AM
Sam
Rachel
Amanda
Christina
Evie
????

If Evie gets direct acceptance then it makes the situation even harder to choose. Agree that Watson and Stewart would be lucky to get one. Would rather Dittman over them.

Is the Aussie Assault being ran this summer??? A strong performance may tip a youngster in maybe.... Isn't the winner given a WC into qualifying????

Wouldn't be suprised to see a WC given to a third non-Aussie

I'd like a qualifying wild card to go to Olivia and a couple of the other young aussies.

Are they holding the Aussie Assault this Year?

ozfan44
Nov 29th, 2002, 03:13 AM
dont think aussie assault is on this year i will check with tenis australia i agree kim&lleytonrule olivia deserves one but i also think that casey dellacqua could even be considered for a main draw wildcard she has easily outperformed watson and stewart the past month or so also lauren cheung and adriana szili are strong chances

ozfan44
Nov 29th, 2002, 03:27 AM
aussie assault starts dec 16 or the week of
i heard it was cancelled this year and that it was going to be a week long training camp for invited players and whoever the selectors thught played the best was given the qualies wc
but once again i was wrong

Only one french palyer gets a wild card. That is because the french federation awards a WC to a aussie paler at Roland Garros, this year it went to Christina Wheeler who beat Anna K in round 1.

Does anyone know how many qualifying wild cards tennis australia gives out?

Sorry, but  @ Jaslyn getting a WC. She is ranked 470 or so, I very much doubt it. She doesnt even deserve one into qualifying.

kim&lleytonrule, 8 qualifying wildcards are handed out and if its like this year, 7 will go to Aussies and 1 will go to the top ranked junior player in the world (this year it was Kuznetsova).

Who I *think* will get the remaining 5

Stosur
Grahame
Wheeler
Watson (unfortunately)
Cohen-Aloro*

Who I *want* to get the remaing 5
Stosur
Grahame
Wheeler
Horiatopoulos
Golovin

Most other Grand Slams blood in a youngster, so it would be nice for TA to give one to an up and comer like Horiatopoulos (who just turned 19, so its now or never), Szili or Dellacqua.

Dont forget that Evie is only a couple of places out from the main draw direct entry, its not impossible that she wont need to use her wildcard which would go to Samantha Stosur. Here's hoping Evie gets in on her own ranking! It looks even more promising as Hingis hasnt entered Sydney, although they are holding a wildcard as a last minute deal.

Watson does deserve a wildcard despite her lousy form of late. Last year she created something out of nothing scrapping her way to the 3rd round, that was a huge mental fight for her. She deserves another go at trying to defend those points. Its not unfeasible that she can win a round or two! Her Grand Slam performances this year were consistent, she also won qualifying matches at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon too! So she does seem to bring her best form into them.

Of the four remaining Australian wildcards

Watson (almost a certainty)
Stosur (certainty)
Grahame (likely)
Wheeler (will probably get it on her Roland Garros performance)

Bryanne will be made to qualify if she hasnt quit tennis!! Dont know why she missed the last 3 Aussie Challengers, must be injury or she has lost motivation.

I dont think there are too many other thats are nearing Main Draw wildcard selection. Christina Horiatopolous is almost there and if Evie gets in directly it would surprise me to see her or even Mireille get a run! I dont think there are any others that would be considered

Why not Olga Barabanschikova!? She had some good results there in the past and she is very very popular in Australia. Olga is always an attraction on and off the court so it could help.

Certain
1. Dominikovic
2. Morigami
3. McQuillian

so that leaves
4. French- in order of likelyhood: Pin, Cohen Aloro, Beigbeider
5. Watson-due to last years OZ Open 3rd rnd effort
6. Wheeler-Giving the up and commer another go
7. Stewart-Due to 3rd rnd effort last year- has the potential
8. Grahame-Serena match and good effort in Canberra 02

Stosur would be 'next in' or at least a wc into qualies.
Nothing against her personally but I hope Jaslyn doesn't get one again-the Lleyton sister thing is unfairher shockers in Sydney and Melb show she has 'too much' of a way to go b4 she can get into a MD. nOt far on the other Aussie girls

AUSBOY
Dec 9th, 2002, 09:58 AM
Bryanne Stewart lost in the 2nd round last year after beating an out of form Jana Nejedly. Bryanne wont be getting a wildcard, she missed the last 3 aussie challengers and appears to have lost motivation or is injured!

Stosur is a guaranteed Wildcard!
McQuillan has one, as does Evie, although Evie is only 4 places away from direct entry!

I doubt Hewitt will get one in singles qualifying! Although she may get one in the doubles main draw and is worthy of one in my opinion!

Wheeler, Watson and Grahame are the likely candidates of the other wildcards.

I hope Evie ends up gettin in on her own ranking as then another wildcard will be freed up and it will be interesting to see who it goes too!

It's been reported that Elena Baltacha will be likely to get a wildcard due to an agreement similar to the one the French Tennis Federation has with the Aus Open.

Woohoo :)

Dec 15th, 2002, 08:41 PM
i'd be pretty surprised if that happened. Tennis Australia should be getting behind their own players and not giving them all to foreigners!!

I'd like to see a US-Wimbledon arrangement similar to the Oz-French one though. I think that'd be more benificial.

I hope Graeme doesnt get one, i need her to draw Ahl in round 1 of qualifying so Lucie gets through :p

head to head is now 4-0 or something :D

I'd guess the French WC will go to Cohen-Aloro, mainly coz she doesnt appear to be on the aceptance list.

i'll pick mine after their Gold Coast performance,
and for the US-Wimbies WC arrangement,
no offense, but US has enough talents
not to award one to Wimbies who probably
wont make it past 2R..........

Australia isnt a whole lot better.

Um whatever you want to believe! We have four players ranked higher that you nations best and our population is about 5 times less than the UK's!

You just need to look at Fed Cup to she that Australia is far superior, we are the 11th strongest nation compared to UK which are like 39th.

You just have to look at history, since 1990 Britain has had how many top 100 players??? maybe 3, I'm guessing, Smith, Durie and Wood? Where as Australia has had at least 15 that I can think of!

Sure you got some good players coming up with Keovthang and Baltacha but you are still a long way behind Australia.

TS
Dec 17th, 2002, 02:25 PM
OK, well Baltacha has reportedly snared a wildcard so that will narrow down the possibilities!

So we have
Morigami
Dominikovic
McQuillan
Baltacha
Frenchie

The following 3 I would give to -

Wheeler, Stosur and Grahame. Bugger Cindy Watson (sorry if that sounds harsh)....but Id rather give one to Amanda. Or hey, they can have a play off for it ;)

Oh, and if the rumors of an American getting are true, than that's just f*cked and I dont know why I bother :p

TheBoiledEgg
Dec 17th, 2002, 03:34 PM

Dec 17th, 2002, 04:36 PM
when will know the French WC?
and the remaining other WC?

Randy H
Dec 17th, 2002, 04:49 PM
I'm assuming Cohen-Aloro got the WC since she is not on the entry list for qualifying?

Gonna be tough for Tennis Australia choosing their last 3 wildcards, but I think Wheeler, and Stosur are good bets. Last one will be tough, they could go with Watson, thinking she should have the chance to defend her points, but I think Grahame deserves it more. I'd like Stewart to, but I think her chances are gone now.

paul_masterton
Dec 17th, 2002, 08:38 PM
can't believe bally got one. she'd have been better off in qualies, win a couple fo rounds which is very possible and push up to around 120.

surely thats better for her than loosing round 1 (which is likely) here?

paul_masterton
Dec 17th, 2002, 08:40 PM
apparently Anne K got one for qualies, but i havent seen it confirmed.

TS
Dec 18th, 2002, 05:32 AM
Yes Anne K got one for qualies. If you cant believe Elena got one, then which Brit should? She's GB's brightest prospect, and with a good draw she can win a match or two here.
