C. W. Fields

I haven't really been paying attention but has Caroline abandoned the "new" service motion, particularly what she was doing with her feet, that we saw at Wimbledon?

Partly. She is still using a slightly wider stance, than pre change. Right ankle was quite heavily strapped though, so could be playing in - either way.

C'MON!!!!!!! Go Denmark :)

Who's waiting for her in round 2?

Wickmayer, who edged Garrigues 7-5 in the 3rd. H2H is 5-0 but this is their first grass match so it's a little hard to predict. Caro's the favorite, though, beating YW as late as Miami this year.

Edit: Both Li Na and Paszek lost their matches today, so if Caro makes it to 3R she'll face Hantuchova or Cornet.

What she was doing at Wimbledon looked a bit awkward. If I recall correctly she had her feet spread quite far apart when she started her service motion. Whatever she was doing today looked smoother.

The way the draw played out, QF is reasonable to expect if she plays like she did in the third. She won't go further though, that will be like a brick wall.

Yep. The 'Marion Bartoli service stance' looked strange. Bizarre really and it's been modified. If it has anything to do with the heavily strapped ankle, is anyone's guess (but if the ankle isn't 100% 100%, a very wide stance will put extra strain on the ankle).

Speaking about technicalities, I don't think that racket is stringed at 21 kg anymore. It sounded and looked much harder. More like back to the 27'ish, where she came from.

Since she won it is easy to say this but it's probably good that she had a long three set match. I'm sure that she has practised a lot but this was her first win on grass this year, hopefully she can get better the deeper she gets. She looked pretty good in the second and third sets but a win against Wickmayer is far from a lock.

Caroline really needs some points, so I hope she'll reach that quarter final. Might help her confidence as well. As for Serena, she's not invincible anymore. She lost some huge matches this year against Makarova, Razzano...and Wozniacki. Everything can happen.

Serena "only" had eight aces in her first match, maybe we can hope that her serve is a bit off?

If they did change the string tension back to the old level, I think that's a mistake. She really could use the extra pop she seemed to be getting.

Maybe they could go with some in between level as a transitional measure.

Yes. I wondered what had happened with the added weight of shot in the first set. I would like to see her continue in the vein of the Paszek match at Wimbledon - same service action, same string tension, same everything. She lost that one, but I liked what I saw.

I'm pretty sure she's using the same string tension as at Wimbledon. Either the balls are heavier, or the air is, but everyone was serving about 10km/h slower than at Wimbledon, at least, according to my quick stat comparison.

Yah, it would have been annoying to go 0-3 on grass this year. Some players who are a bit sucky on grass had won matches on it which bothered me.

I'm wondering how much of the forehand is based on confidence.

I wish she had taken about a week less off for vacation after Wimbledon (I was thinking this pre-tournament). A 2 1/2 week vacation seems unwarranted based on her results as of late. She could have used the extra week of training.

I'm not concerned about time off before the Olympics. If she's going to do anything big this year, its after grass season. So we'll see whats going on when she gets to that.
I was for going to play Stanford/San Diego, but if she has an ankle problem, rest it during grass season.

Overall, today didnt look good, but had a very beatable opponent. Since she hasnt won a match since May, maybe she was rusty

I only saw the first set live tonight, and while she looked very nervous and seemed to be saving her ankle, I was pretty confident of the win.

I too want to hear the reaction re the raquet because the weight was gone but it sounded as lightly strung as before. She can't be having to deal with stick issues all the time.

Hopefully she gets to grow into the tournament.
