Maybe after USO, she ends her season and then Caro can have 4 month thinking about, what she wants to do with her life.

Anabel Croft retired from tennis at .. 21, I think it was. She has become a very popular and successful commentator .. so there is a life outside the tour, but still involved with tennis. It doesn't have to be a Anna-K retirement.

Well, she has 2,500 race points, so that'll keep her inside top 20 for the time being. She is still capable of winning against players like Lepchenko and Wozniak (just), but that probably also shows Caro's 'true' ranking now .. Losing to those in top 25, but winning against top 40 .. so exciting .. *sighs*

A year ago we were all kidding ourselves about how this is just because she's rusty after the summer break. If anybody had projected this people would have laughed him/her out of this forum.

I think we hit a new low today.

Agree. I personally thought the low was reached against Ivanovic in I/W, but I was wrong.

We've been good at making all sort of excuses for losses after that. Allergies in Rome and Kanepi was good in FO and Paszek played the best match of her life and ... Serena again in Olympics and ... she had to play 5 sets the day before in Montreal.

They (she) deliberately dismantled her game 12 months ago and it's made her a terrible tennis player .. She cannot handle having a relationship and playing top tennis at the same time either = career over

Call me a drama queen, but unless I see signs of the opposite, my new thesis is, Caroline's career is over.

I just don't see how she can be satisfied with this unfinished business. Her critics are saying that she has never truly proven herself and she's basically giving them merit by playing like this. There was a time when Kournikova was top 8 and getting to finals & semis.
Now comparing a woman athlete to Anna is treated like a huge insult to the athlete.

Similar might happen to Caro. Is she keeps playing like this(and it certainly doesnt look good going forward), then a young phenom being compared to her is going to be an insult. Maybe she'll be known as the worst #1 ever. When you're a famous athlete, these kinds of results over & over are how people remember you. They dont remember the tennis that got you famous. They see what you're doing while famous

C. W. Fields
Aug 17th, 2012, 04:40 PM
4-6, 4-6. If it's possible to say this about a female tennis player, then Caro played this match without balls. No fire, no daring, just moving the ball around. Pavly wasn't brilliant but she showed courage and went for her shots. I think AP was about 50-50 on winners/UEs. She made plenty of errors to give Caro BPs but then saved the games with winners. You'd think that when you have double BPs, you'd dare to go for something on the first point, make or break. Even if you miss, you have a second chance. But no, Caro hit the same passive shots all the time.
It really looked like Caro didn't WANT to win! Was the thought of facing Petra again (tired) too much? She didn't think she could win here in Cincinatti anyway, so she'd rather save her strength for New Haven next week, 'her' tournament? If NH can't motivate her, nothing can!

Call me a drama queen, but unless I see signs of the opposite, my new thesis is, Caroline's career is over.

Other players do it so it must be possible, it's not a valid excuse for me. It's a matter of self-control that she seems to be unwilling or unable to apply. But yeah, I agree..... looking at her reaction to all this I wouldn't count on her playing until 30 like she planned.

She either mans up now and concentrates on tennis or she might as well call it quits. But this slow and painful slide into obscurity is really taking away the merit of her past success...everybody who claimed she was a fluke now feels confirmed.

Agree. Either you play or you don't bother at all. As much as I dislike her, Sharapova apparently manages to keep a boyfriend .. I don't know who he is .. some Serbian basket ball player, I think ... but it just goes to show, why Wozzilroy is the worlds leading sports couple. They are celebrities ... but so is Kardashians, and that's NOT meant as a compliment.

Yes, ESPECIALLY that. We'd be exaggerating if we say she didn't try, but she definitely didn't have that "over my dead body" mentality she had in the past. As long as that was there there was hope. But if that's gone she has no chance of ever getting back to anywhere near to where she was. And even the best Caro would find it hard to get back on top since all of the big guns of her age group have improved a lot over the last year plus or so and Serena and Maria are back at their best. Not not only that, we can expect girls like Sloane Stephens and Mona Barthel to improve a lot over the next twelve months and join the elite. If Caroline doesn't get her act together VERY soon she'll totally miss the boat.

Most players have boyfriends, they`re just less vocal about it. Vika has been dating a guy for years now and she has steadily improved during that time and she's as hungry as ever..like I said, it's no excuse.

But there's a time for fun and a time for tennis and she continuesly mixes them up, that's what's hurting her focus. The USO swing is about four weeks long, why couldn't she stay focused for that time at least? Is that too much to ask? If her answer is yes than we have the answer why she's in trouble like that...she's not willing to make sacrifices anymore and that's what's needed to be at the top.

Yah, there was some reason for optimism after Wimbledon and the Olympics.

So what did happen to her game between now and then? Why have things dropped off a lot?

In the 1st set, Caro was down 0-30 or faced break points in 3/5 of her service games. For Pavlyuchenkova, it was 2/5 of her service games.

In the 2nd set, Caro was down 0-30 or faced break points in 2/5 of her service games. For Pavlyuchenkova, it was 3/5 of her service games.

For the match, Caro was down 0-30 or faced break points in 5/10 of her service games. For Pavlyuchenkova, it was 5/10 of her service games.

Dunno, but they were messing with her string tension during wimby and Olympics. Maybe the tension that works for grass doesn't cut it on hard court? (just speculating here - as i have absolutely no practical tennis experience)
Her groundies seemed kinda impotent (again) today.

Definitely signs that she had been heading down a dead end getting her stick stable... Not fun.

I don't get the impression that this tournament was a target at all and moreover, an inconvenience. If practice reports are anything to go by there is progress being made. All the coughing isn't exactly a motivator either with the real target coming up.

There are a couple of other explanations but I'll keep those to myself.

Stats are a bit up and down: 68% 1st serves is ok but winning only 64% is a little low. 0 DFs is good but only 1 ace, she's been serving few aces lately. Being broken 3 times against a player ranked in the 40s is a bit high, but at least Caro was fairly effective on BPs and broke 6/11. Her ROS winning are 47% on 1st serve and 59% on 2nd serve which looks promising but it's hard to really tell when we didn't see the match and don't know the quality of Makarova's serves.
And of course protennislive stats say nothing about winners/UEs.

Edit: No caro on the Tuesday program (no Petra, either).
