Well, I think Caro can bank on her running out of steam sooner or later (rather sooner..).

Yes, Pavly does look to be carrying quite a few kilos more than ideal, but she was quick to the net, when Caro tried a drop stop volley ...

We'll see.

Its never too late, and I'm confident she could switch back quickly, but with the current pace and weight she is getting she wouldn't be any better off. There really isn't a huge difference between her 2010 game and her present one if you discount the disappearance of weight in her shots.

Its about the same. She won 3 of 6 matches with TJ. Thats about her whole year. With a soft draw, like a depleted Montreal, she can win a match or 2. Tough draw, she probably loses round 1.

Well, better to be killed by the likes of Serena or Masha at the YEC than by Pavlyunchenkova in Cincinatti. Pavlyuchenkova is having a terrible year - Jankovic like. Agreed but the YEC could be a devastating experience. Imagine her drawing Kvitova, Vika and Radwanska. Kvitova will kill her on HC indoors and a shellacking from her two best friends on the tour would probably do even worse for her confidence.

I think it's best she stays away this year, she simply doesn't have the level to do anything meaningful there, safe for some complete miracle.

Since her draw after this is tough, this loss isnt a big deal. Kvitova is playing better than Caroline.
Then she has a big chunk of her points to defend.
How long has Caro been in the top 10? It might be getting near the end. Then the draws get even tougher, and the opponents, like tonight, are more confident

Since 2009, Caro has the longest active streak of all players (Vika is 2nd with being in there since 2010). So dropping out of it would be another devastating confirmation that she's going majorly backwards.

Edit: Not entirely sure now, maybe it's even since 2008? All I know is that Caro holds the longest streak with Vika in 2nd with a year less.

We have enough confirmation she's going backwards, with or without the ranking drop.
But dropping out of the top 8 makes the draws, on average, tougher. Thats why Jankovic keeps dropping. Tougher draws than when she was falling out of the top 10

Yeah. She was in a comfortable situation since she came from so high up..her points cushion gave her over a year to address these issues, it's not like she got injured and had no chance to stop this fall.

But sadly there's no progress, it's one step forward two steps back.

Would she drop out the Top 10 with an early lost at the Open Lord I hope that don't happenShe had a high ranking for a long part of the last 12 months.
If she plays the same the next 12 months, her ranking will keep dropping, because she'll be playing top 8 seeds earlier in tournaments. Also fewer byes
The game is very good to you if you have a great ranking. As the ranking goes away, so do the good draws ( except for a rare situation)

I've been looking over Jankovic's year, and she can play more Int'ls. So thats a positive for Caro. Out of the top 10, she can choose a lot of little tournaments, if she wants

21 errors? So now she plays on a pace for 63 errors.

The more I think of this career collapse, the more I think of Rory.
He had a girlfriend. He put on a tennis match and saw an attractive young #1 and he decided he was going to switch girlfriends.

Its not his fault, its Caro's career. But I think of Tiger & all the girlfriends, and Rory switching girlfriends. I just wonder..

Shall we conclude that the current Caro is worse than the 2009 & 1st half of 2010 Caro? We already know that she's a lot worse than when she went on her hot streak after 2010 Wimbledon.

Her 1st 4 wins against Pavlyuchenkova were from New Haven in 2009 to the Wimbledon in 2010. In only one of those sets did Pavlyuchenkova win more than 4 games (she won 5 games in the 1st set of their Wimbledon match). After the close Wimbledon match (7-5 6-4), Caro went on to beat Pavlyuchenkova easily in Tokyo (6-1 6-2).

Disturbing contrast:

Caro 17 winners 10 unforced errors vs Pavlyuchenkova in Tokyo in 2010
Caro 7 winners 21 unforced errors (1st set only) vs Pavlyuchenkova in Cincy in 2012

I'm afraid the suspension will be a bad thing for Caro. She's often a slow starter. When the rain started, she had at least gotten enough rhytm on her serve to hold three times in a row. When they resume she'll be 'cold' again and I fear she'll be broken again.
Also, the beginning physical advantage we often see Caro develop in set 2 of a tough match, isn't likely to show up here when Pavly has more than half a day to rest between set 1 and 2.
We must just hope that the slow serving Pavly we saw at the beginning of the match will show up again so Caro can at least keep up at the start of the resumption.

Yeah. She was in a comfortable situation since she came from so high up..her points cushion gave her over a year to address these issues, it's not like she got injured and had no chance to stop this fall.

But sadly there's no progress, it's one step forward two steps back.

Why is Caro a slow starter?

I don't particularly like the strategy of winning because you wear your opponent out. If Caro wants to beat the top players again, they're not likely to get all fatigued.
