As a ballbasher in 2nd set, Sofia now also reached the UE number for 1st set, 11

Break to 30, 3-2. It's not Caro hitting winners, it's SA missing. Apparently she has abandoned her trying-to-outsteady tactics from set 1 but her going-for-winners tactics isn't working, either.

6-3, 6-7(4). Caro seems intent on repeating yesterday's pattern: after serving in the 70s in set 1 she serves in the 50s in set 2, gets broken 4 times and loses TB after failing to serve out match. Let's hope the pattern continues in set 3 and we get an easy last set.

Caro wins 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4 in 2h35m. A win is a win but it's really worrisome how bad Caro has become at holding serve when close to winning. She has failed to serve it out in all her 3 matches in this tournament! Her game is pretty good most of the time but then she tightens up. It's extra sad because she used to have such a strong psyche. I hope it's just an effect of her bad results the last 1½ years so she gets nervous easier because she doesn't trust her game as much as she used to. If she manages to get some good results despite her frail psyche, hopefully she will get back to where she used to be mentally.
I know this slow surface doesn't favor the server as much as it does on fast HC, but it's still rather comical that after a fairly normal first set with 3 breaks we saw 15(!) breaks the last two sets.

Achernar
Oct 20th, 2012, 12:57 PM
Luckily, Caroline had the chance to finish it off on Sofia's service game. She has to recover a real service game and the confidence to put the last nail in the coffin. Can you forfeit your own service game? :silly: Caroline's life would be easier that way.

Anyway, a new final is always welcome and Sofia was in good form (she did ousted Bartoli after all). And despite its nerve wracking dimension the match was enjoyable, with many great rallies. Time to celebrate :aparty:

Well, Arvidsson was not giving her much breathing space. She returned everything and for some parts of it was not making errors.
I think Caro did not expect such resistence and she looked pretty much caught by surprise in the first set.

Well done Caro. :) This was actually a very good match with some good tennis. There was that 44 rally gane Sofia won in the second set and another one like that soon after. There were a lot of breaks - but I don't thing serve was ever giving anyone any real advantage. Sofia could get a few points serving wide to Caro's forehand, short cross court forehand return and DTL winner.

The 2nd set when Caro failed to serve it out and lost the TB. But Sofia was probably playing her best tennis of the match round about then.

The 3rd set - I have a problem with the way Caro was playing on her serve - those last 3 service games. Not so much her serve per se - but basic rallies and her bread and butter game. There was a big difference the way she played when serving as opposed to returning. When receiving - she played with controlled aggression. Controlled points, made winners or forced an error. When serving, she was just sloppy in the rallies. As well as passive - I could swear she made more UEs for no reason on her serve than when she was receiving serve and controlling points (controlled aggression) and made her winners.

GM likes matches with two or three stroke rallies with a shot that ends up hitting the back fence. They call that "going for your shots." They hate anyone who moves around the court as though her shoes aren't five sizes too big and can get a good shot from an opponent back into play. If GM would ever like Caroline it's time to REALLY start worrying that her career is going down the drain.

Yes, but when you have 46 UE in matches that have on average three or four shot rallies it's a much worse 46 UE than in a match like this because it means that nearly half of their shots are errors.

True, but that's womens tennis. There are only a minority of women that get any real advantage out of serving. In many matches games won on serve and on return are pretty even and in some matches serving actually seems like a disadvantage. But yes, in Caroline's matches of the last year or so it actually feels as though she has broken whenever she holds serve at the business end of a set or match.

A dane say about the possible YE Top 10:

Hvis Caroline taber finalen, opnår hun 3535 pts. Sejr i Sofia giver 375 (hvis reglerne ikke er ændret på det punkt også), men hun skal i så fald modregne 16. bedste, som er 175 ved OL, og dermed opnår hun kun 3735. Bartoli har som bekendt 3740.

I did see the vast majority of the match, I missed part of the second last game and all of the last game. There were some nice forehand winners and she did go to the net much more often than usual, and she was very effective when she did, but the serve had me doing this:banghead:

On those slow courts - I really don't see the serve as much of an advantage. It's just a way of starting the point even with the best of serves with Caro and Sofia both good returners. I would expect a few more service games to be won in the match but that's all.

The real problem was how she played those last three service games in the 3rd set compared to how she played those last 3 ROS games in the 3rd set. Forget the serve itself - why couldn't she play the points and the rallies when serving like she was doing on ROS. I would be interested when she made her UEs. Because like I said before - I believe she made UEs when she was sloppy and passive on her serve. But diid not make UEs when she controlled points, made some lovely winners or forced the error when playing with controlled aggression on ROS.

Oh and I think when she lost her serve at the end of the 2nd set was more due to the fact that Sofia was playing her best tennis of the match towards the end of the 2nd set.

Hej, You is good doing the math! If Caroline lose tomorrow, but wins the Title in Sofia, will she so finish in TOP 10?

She's now secured 320 - 125 points in Moscau = 195 so actual state behind Bartoli by 205 (210 to pass her). Max points in Sofia winning all her games and the final - watch:

25 points per round robin + 35 for a win = 60 points for a win
3 wins gives 3x60 points = 180 points
Semi adds 70 points to that
And a final win extra 120 points

So added together there are a max of 180+70+120 points = 370 points and she has to withdraw 125 points (her 17th result) and that means there are 245 points 35 more than needed (which also means she can lose one round robin match). So if she lose tomorrow she has to win in Sofia. If she wins in Moscau the situation is a little different then it's done with a place in the semi in Sofia.

So the dane doing the math is wrong, as you say her 17th best drop off, where he think her 16th best drop off...

35 points can do a big difference... :)

I don't know what you are thinking of but The 17th result is taking over if the tournament a player is participating in gives a result less than the 17th result, which you can say gives a sort of security for not dropping too long in the rankings. The only - as far as I can see - tournaments where the 17th result can't take over is in the slams, where the points you get there is what you get.

Caro: "I'm happy to be through to the final and have another match to go."

Wozniacki is now in her 31st WTA final, going 19-11 in her first 30; but more notably she is in her first Premier final since winning New Haven last August.

No.1-seeded Stosur had her own slow start against No.4 seed Ana Ivanovic, getting broken three times en route to losing the first set, 6-2, and surviving some very tense moments as she fell behind 0-30 serving at 3-all in the second set; but her aggressive game came together just in time, bringing her nine of the last 11 games of the match from 26 33 to record a 26 63 62 victory.

"She was definitely playing quite well in the first set, getting the first good shot of the rally and putting me on the defensive - so I had to turn it around," Stosur said after the match. "In the second set I started to serve better and step into my returns, too. I really improved my movement and was able to get the first shot myself, and from there I was able to do it for the rest of the match.

"Even though I didn't win the first set, I thought I could win."

Stosur is now through to her 15th WTA final, going 3-11 in her first 14; the Australian is chasing her first WTA title of the year, in fact her first WTA title since her famous first Grand Slam title at the US Open last September.
