Didn't see much from 2nd set, how she was playing?

According to @fogmount, "Both went for ambitious shots. A lot more of Caro's went in the court." I saw some of the first set, between taking a dump, making breakfast, showering, and getting ready for work. She actually unleashed a forehand! Yes, it's true! She fired it right at Clara's feet and Clara couldn't handle it. It's too bad I didn't record it, because we probably won't see one again for a couple of months.

That sounds like the same weak arsed 2012 Caro version. The very mentally frail one.

I don't think we'll see much improvement in Caro's mental game until she's having more success again. There's also the possibility of Caro going to a sports psychologist. I don't know how she feels about such things.

We have a report from a credible witness. :p

Personally, I thought Caro played pretty well out there. Was she at her best? Who knows? Who knows what her "best" is right now.
She was aggressive with her returns as well as with her backhand. She was even aggressive with her forehand at times. Plus, her forehand didn't fail her as often as before.

One thing that I didn't like is how often she waited too long to "pull the trigger". They got into a couple rallies that could have ended multiple times if Caro had just gone down the line. But that's not really anything new since she's a counterpuncher.

manixdk
Sep 22nd, 2012, 05:48 AM
Caro stunk out the joint in the second set. She loses when she tries to make her opponent give her the match. Those days are long gone. At 5-4 in the 3rd set, she finally decided to play the way she and Thomas have decided she should. I didn't see most of the 3rd set because the stream on Bet365 was stopping and starting, the scoring was behind and it was driving me nuts, but the game to 6-4 was steller. @fogmount: "And with an ace, service winner, backhand drive volley, and backhand crosscourt, Wozniacki holds to love to beat Makarova, 61 57 64." @jeffd. "Wozniacki proves that when she's aggressive with the backhand, she wins. Makarova proves when you stop hitting to the FH, you lose." Easier to let them say it :) But I agree. But one lovely crosscourt forehand winner from deep in the corner. She crushed it. She hits it like that all the time in practice. Now that's 2 matches in a row. She is so damned frustrating to watch. She has a big game and just won't use it. At least she used it when she needed it today in the final game. Maybe that's progress?

YES!!! Well done to win it, Caro! Very solid play in the first set - and then the usual decline and passivity. But a win is a win. And everything that helps restore Caro's confidence counts.

Personally, I thought Caro played pretty well out there. Was she at her best?
One thing that I didn't like is how often she waited too long to "pull the trigger". They got into a couple rallies that could have ended multiple times if Caro had just gone down the line. But that's not really anything new since she's a counterpuncher.

Join the club.

Thomas isn't trying to stop her being a counter puncher, but he's trying to get her to turn it up a notch to counter attacker. Like you write, she had so many chances early in rallies, but is still so focussed on her combination game instead of pouncing on the chance when it's there. It's fine to have long rallies and hope her opponent makes a mistake, but they've sussed that out now, and are just being patient and out waiting Caro. That's what happened in the 2nd set. Makarova used Caro's game against her. I hope the way Caro won the final game helps to convince her that that's the way she has to go.

One thing that makes me extra happy about this match is that today we really saw Caro pull herself together when the going got tough, like she used to be so good at. I was really worried at 0-1 3rd set. Caro had just lost 4 games in a row and Makarova was playing well. I had a strong feeling that if Caro didn't up her game NOW, Makarova would run away with the set. But Caro DID up her game and was able to match a well-playing Makarova and edge her in the end.
I think this match can do good things for Caro's selfconfidence. She knows she played badly in set 2, but she was able to pull herself out of that self-digged hole. She didn't just win this 3rd set on a weak opponent making errors, she was able to beat a pretty strong opponent by playing a little better.

Agreed. Makarova didn't give Caro the match, Caro went out and took it. Huge difference.

Nice to see her pull out a tight match again (finally!). She's lost too many of these close ones lately. Now she needs to win the tournament.

The 2nd set wasn't a good one for Caro in terms of taking her chances:

broken at 1-2 after having a game point at 40-30
broken at 2-3 after having 2 game points at 40-15
broken at 5-4 after being up 30-0
fails to convert 2 break points at 40-15 at 5-5

Those are pretty terrible numbers. I think that underscores how far she has fallen. Makarova is a top thirty player but I feel pretty confident that Caroline 1.0 would have steamrolled her. She has a lot of work and improvement that she needs to do if she is going to start winning matches against top ten ranked opponents.

I am trying to build an algorithm to maximize my utility from the follow components : Getting up early Vs sleep, Caroline winning or losing. Naturally paired with the probability for W and L.

So far, I've only gotten to 'sleep' and that has trumped everything else

Is there a stream that you can access without having an account and money at some betting site?

Aside from the fact that the match times have been really inconvenient this week, the lack of streams really has put me off from making much of an effort just to look at the score.

What do U guys think Caro Chances are against Kaia

Haven't really seen the matches Kanepi has played lately, but people are saying that she isn't playing super well.

However, i have low hopes at this point. Kanepi has everything it takes to smack Caro around. She's aggressive with a good amount of power. Caro is gonna have to be playing really well or decent enough with Kanepi having a mental breakdown..

I haven't seen either of them play this week so I feel a bit weird going into this match. All I know is that this is probably her only chance to win a title this year and I really hope she doesn't blow it.

Fittingly ends with a KK error. 6-1, 6-0 in 62 minutes. This was surprisingly easy. Caro was good but KK was also pretty bad. Caro only landed 50% of her 1st serves and yet she only faced BPs in one game and wasn't broken. That says something about her opponent's level. But, hey, after more than a year without titles I won't complain. And now she won't go to Tokoy tired. :)

Edit: Caro only needed to win 56 points to win the match, just 8 more than the minimum.

It's kind of fitting that Caro won this final in such a dominating manner. :) Her 1st title in Stockholm was in a similarly dominating fashion and she hadn't been without a title in her ranking since then up until the end of New Haven this year.
