Caro was never behind this set, so she does seem the most natural winner. Her 1st serve ended on 56%, almost decent.

Cibulkova next. Let's hope Caro plays better than their last match in Sydney. Probably her worst win ever, played like crap for 1½ sets.
For some reason the two of them always meet in NH on even years, Caro winning both their previous matches here.
Only 5 spots between them in the rankings right now, smallest difference since 2008.

Yes, and "Swinging wild at every single ball" is only part of the problem. She's also a fighter and one of the best defensive player on tour. I fear her, but she's the kind of opponent Caroline needs to beat to recover her confidence. She did it often, so she knows how to beat Cibulkova.

For now, I'll savour today's victory :)

The injury has made her try more to shorten the rallies. She knew that if she relied on the usual strategy her knee would get really bad. Hopefully she'll recovers in time for the next match.

Caro wins 2 & 1 after a nice performance, helped some by many Domi errors. That makes it 20-0 in NH!
The knee is a question mark for tomorrow, of course. I wonder if the haters in GM still care enough to cry "fake injury"?
Good stats.

Of course I don't want Caroline to suffer any injuries but this is a little strange. She's not playing at her best, she hurts her knee and she has her most dominant win over Cibulkova? Maybe this is a sign that with focus she can be a much better and efficient player?

I'm way beyond caring what any of those shit kickers say. But I'm very worried about the injury. Cibulkova played tactically a very poor match and didn't even attempt to exploit Caro's injury. Caro played very well (great serving, great backhands, very few UE), but.....Caroline just can't seem to get a break this year. I hope she'll be ok for tomorrow and especially the USO, but it's knock wood and hope for the best I guess.

I'm completely talking out of my ass here as I haven't seen the match and I'm not even sure what the injury is about, however we have seen this before. Some of her most impressive performances in the past have been when she was handicapped in some form... as soon as she knows she dosen't have the stamina to grind out a match she'll change her approach.

She has problems moving to her forehand side and putting her body weight on that right leg though. If it doesn't get better overnight it will be an issue against anyone who doesn't have a brain freeze. It would be a big problem for anyone, but even more so for someone like Caroline who's game depends so much on superb movement.

Actually, everyone in the GM result thread seem to accept the injury as genuine, they just blame Domi for not exploiting it better. I guess Caro not being #1 anymore has removed some of the venom.
Yes, the injury is worrisome but I'm hoping it's similar to the injury she got against Ivanovic 2 years ago. The circumstances are similar: Caro hits a shot off the ground, lands a bit badly and overstretches her knee. But back then she could fight through 2½ matches with a taped knee to win the tournament, let's hope she can do it again.

Missed the match since i'm in school, but really glad she won that.
Apparently she played well in the first set so that's nice to hear. I'll stick to believing that it was because Thomas is there with her now and is offering his advice. :) as for the injury, i hope it's not too serious. I didn't see how it happened.. But if she was willing to continue the match, it probably wasn't extremely bad.

I may be alone here, but i'd rather see her win this than drop out now and prepare for us open. A title would be a much better event than a qf loss in a major, maybe even a 4th round loss since Ivanovic is there too..

Yes. I'd love to see if she can get this title a 5th time in a row. If there's a real problem with the injury - then it it has to be for her own health then retire. But I'm with you on this. Not just so she can prepare for the USO

Same here. I think it would cheer her up and help her to stay motivated. Despite what all the naysayers claim about smaller event I think that New Haven has brought her a lot of recognition and vice-versa. I think that without her the ticket sales there would suffer.

Good Luck Caro!

But ithink there's over 50% chance Caro won't play.

If Caro can't play, I think they'll make the announcement in good time so the spectators won't go in vain. One of the reasons for that colossal mishaps with the Williamses at IW 2001 was because the tournament kept delaying the announcement, though Venus said hours before match time that she couldn't play (they were probably hoping she would change her mind). So it became a last minute announcement and the spectators got furious, blaming the Williamses because they didn't know any better.
I doubt Caro/the NH people want to risk something similar, so the closer we get to match time without an announcement, the better chances Caro will play, in my opinion.

They had a good field with Kerber playing Jankovic in the other semi.
You cant ask for more at an Int'l. 2010,2011 #1 in one semi, 2008 #1 vs a player moving into the top 10 in the other semi.

If that doesnt lead to sponsorships, its probably right to end it

Jimmie48
Aug 24th, 2012, 05:15 PM

I think there's two factors to this here:

Caro's recent slump. The tournament was completely built around her and as such there's a great risk..once the player the tournament is based on becomes less popular, the whole event is in trouble.

The general lack of interest in tennis in Denmark. Again, I can't get over this, the crowd numbers for the non-Caro matches were abysmal, I've been to ITF tournaments that had better crowds than the non-Caro matches at Farum. People couldn't be bothered to stay in their seats to watch players like Kerber etc... I mean come on, how little interest in tennis do you have to have to act like that?

It has nothing to do with it being an intentional, take Luxembourg for example...a similar-sized arena with no big home-town favorite but it still draws good crowds because people care. And as long as people care, sponsors will too.

The spectators treated Copenhagen like an exhibition..they came to see Caro and have a good time and that's it, everything else wasn't of relevance. This means there's no backup plan, as soon as less people are interested in Caro the event is doomed...and this happened now.

I think there's two factors to this here:

Caro's recent slump.

The general lack of interest in tennis in Denmark.

While you are not incorrect, those reasons could also well have played a part, you're forgetting the reason NSG gave themselves. The lack of available sponsorships in general.

AG Copenhagen, the Danish version of THW Kiel / Flensburg/Handewitt just went belly up. And that's in a in Denmark top 3 sport with literally non-stop TV coverage on terrestrial channels.

Farum Open was covered initially in prime time on terrestrial TV. Caro's matches took in ratings of round 650-820k viewers. Which is a high % for a country with 5.5 mill inhabitants.

Then again, showing some 'celebrities' killing a pig in Thailand or getting drunk (on some little island), probably pulls in 1 mill viewers. So there you have it.

Jorn
Aug 24th, 2012, 05:40 PM
AG Copenhagen was one mans work, like Caro was at Farum, but that man got "broke" because of a news papers bad news about him, and he had a big tax bill to pay, but with Caro's money they should be able to run a tennis tournament, IF it not like Goldenlox said was all about to make more money...

TennisFan66
Aug 24th, 2012, 05:44 PM
