Well, after the complete disaster of the past few months, I think this is the part of the season that will decide whether Marion can cling onto a top 10 spot and challange in the race. Theres practically no other top 25 player in Stanford, (Serena will surely pull out) and only a few in San Diego, and then a lot of tired players not used to the surface in Montreal, which is traditionally one of Marions best tournaments. Cinci and NY to follow, I presume no New Haven for her. She really cannot afford any bad or early losses here. She really should take the Stanford title. I hope. :scared:

Stanford draw will be out later I think.

Straightforward R2, Stephens/Watson could be tricky but she shouldnt lose to them and Wickmayer is her pidgeon I think. The other quarter on her half looks even easier. Her record in the past 3 years is 13-2, lets hope she finds some form again, these could be easy points.

She will play US college Mallory Burdette R2. We will see how she feels. I suppose that her dad has locked everything around her in order to recover high level. They tried something new. It didn't work. At least they tried.

Some tweets about it

Sampras marveling at Bartoli's swing volleys. "How do u do that?" "U want me to teach u?" He's looking at her like she's a freak of nature.

Bartoli is absolutely crushing her returns, much to Pete's bewilderment/amusement

When Serena asked Marion if she could hit w/ Pete Sampras instead, "Serena, for once, let me beat you in something. I'm hitting w/ him."

There are way too many points available to gain right now for that to affect her :help:

Into the SF :bounce:

Probably would have won in straights if her serve hadn't gone off the boil in the second set (47% and 7 double faults...), but she's fighting hard this week.

Huge opportunity with Chan in the SF. Both will be tired though no doubt.

Ferg
Jul 21st, 2012, 11:04 AM
Any win is good at this stage. Particularly vs. McHale who will no doubt have made her play a lot of balls. Hopefully she can just hit herself into some form. Was it Chan she double bagelled at Wimbledon a few years back?

Marionated
Jul 21st, 2012, 12:27 PM
Yes, 2009 R1.

I saw some of her match against JJ- she's quite adept at using angles so will be able to exploit Marion's movement and reach- her serve is pretty weak though- didn't serve a single ace in a match that lasted over 3 hours.

Marionated
Jul 23rd, 2012, 07:51 PM
She played some of the worst tennis of her career this week so, as Misty said, it's a miracle she was even in the final, still it's sad to see her lose yet another big final.

Stats wise, I can't remember her ever hitting so many errors in a two set match, and she hit 22 unforced errors in the 1st set of her SF too.

Who knows where she is going to go from here. Fingers crossed that a switch will flip and she'll start playing well again, like in Osaka last year.

One thing is sure though- she needs to fix her scheduling. I believe she's set to play in Canada, Cincinatti and New Haven. It's just way too much and will probably kill any chance of her having a decent US Open result.

Not a bad draw til the quarter finals. Azarenka was in London til yesterday so may not take this too seriously. And we all know how bad Petra can be on the hardcourts... Draw could have been worse, I'd take Petra over Stosur or Wozniacki from that bracket of 5-8.

I hear that. The thing with Marion is that she has never been able to achieve consistantly good results at any time in her career. She is always ranked highly based on 3-4 good performances spaced out in the year with 14 other reasonable performances making up the rest. There have been so many times since 2007 that I thought she was going to fall out of the top 20 and dissapear into oblivion but she never has. I have to assume that this time will be no different.

Ferg

(8)Lucie Safarova (CZE) v Varvara Lepchenko (USA)

I see your point, Ferg, but I believe she played a night match, or at least late on in the evening.

As for the New Haven draw, I agree that it's soft, and Laura really hasn't show much on the American hardcourts, but I guess I can't be too peeved if Marion loses.

Serve looked much better than it has done lately, but, as I said in GM, she was way too content to just rally.

Of course, when the oppoent is missing a lot, like Hampton was until 1-4 in the second set, it's a good idea, but when they start putting the ball in court, working the points and changing the direction of the ball, putting Marion on the defense, her lack of agility is exposed.

And she didn't alter her game plan today by going for her shots when Hampton stepped it up. Maybe that's just due to a lack of confidence right now, still she was lucky to squeeze out this win in two sets.

Oprandi or Petkovic next.

misty1

Dad's interview this morning : vs Petra, game plan is clear. Marion should force Petra to play longer rallyes. It means, good return and stay in the rallyes as long as possible. With more intensity than the first rounds.

Pushing :sobbing:

i dont know if id call that pushing, he just wants her to try and extend the rallies which is actually a good idea because the longer a rally goes the more likely it is petra will make a mistake

probably go for the winner herself if she can

marion knows how to beat petra, she's done it twice before

me neither! I didn't want to watch this match because I just thought it was going to be as painful as their last meeting. Once again Marion comes out of nowhere just when you think she is down and out. Insane.

Wow, that was a crazy match earlier. Somebody dialled up the intensity to 9000 per cent. :cheer: I had to come back and post here to celebrate that display of awesomeness (I am like Serena, I show up for the slams now)

I would love it if she could get a win over Sharapova.

I know. I feel so stupid to have missed Peak Marion who shows up only once or twice a year. :sobbing: I love when she goes crazy and screams, jumps and fistpumps on every point. Highlights from ES aren't bad for once, you should check it out!
I would have never thought she would make it. Now she's reached QF in every Slam, how good is that!
Sharapova is such a bad match-up for her but who knows... Allez !!!

she had such a fantastic start against sharapova and now the match gets suspended

i only hope she comes out with the same intensity and excellence she had today tommorrow and at least manages to close out the set

i really feel like she was on her way to her first win over maria and now this rain delway gives her all night to think about the fact that she's dominating someone she's never even tooken a set from

I'm a bit sad right now

She had a real chance there, and I will admit, I am certainly no fan or Miss Sharapova at all ... Eww

Would have been really nice to get a first career win over her ...

sadly Marion just wasn't as good as she was yesterday, and 'Pova got better.

Still, some points on Marions ranking this week :bounce:

Really proud of her effort here

She was incredible in the first four games!Of course it's a huge ask for her to replicate that form after such a long break.

As I said in GM, she missed the boat at the start of the second set. Couldn't get a first serve in at 1*0 and had a few errors on the break points in the next game.

It looked like she was going to fade early on in the third but she played incredible to go up 3-2* didn't really mess up on the break points in the next game- Sharapova got her second serves in and had good depth.

She look quite disappointed walking off but still signed for the kid :awww:

Career Quarter slam completed :bounce:

Bitterly, bitterly disappointed that she lost this match.

You can't fault her for effort though. She gave everything, right until the last game.

Logically speaking, there is no way of knowing that Sharapova could not have come back and won yesterday. But it "felt" like she would have won in two sets. Really disappointing. Oh well. Still a great effort to get as far as she did, this time.

great match and very little between them in the end
Marion played excellent and absolutely murdered that ball off both sides:eek:
Maria hit a few good serves at the end, and Marion missed a few so-so returns
but what a great, dramatic quarter-final:worship:
really enjoyed it:)

this has been a great tournament for Marion and she has now completed
her set of Grand Slam quarter-finals and gained many points which will help her
towards her race for YEC, well done!:wavey:

Match was there for the taking but just missed on a few of the important points. If someone had offered me a QF here and pushing someone shes never taken a set off of close before the tournament I would have taken it in a heartbeat. Hope she can keep this up in Asia when the other girls slow down in prep for the YEC.

I can't even be upset about this loss. I had her losing to Oprandi 6-0 in the third so this is is just beyond my expectations. Would love to see Marion pick up this form and maybe even win a title in Asia but I wouldn't count on it.

Surprised no Osaka.

Discussion regarding Fed Cup, Will be very interesting to see the results! No Osaka due to Sam Stosur's choice to play Osaka. Sam gets priority due to better top 10 ranking. And from what i know, Azarenka choose Linz, Wozniacki Seoul, Stosur Osaka.....

No end of 2011 top 10 player in Quebec, Tashkent and Luxembourg (Kerber has no limits in 2012).

Concerning famous discussion with momo today, no news at the moment.
