View Full Version : Picnic on the green grass with Julia - OLYMPICS !

Clay season ended with a nice accent - Doubles-Title in Bad Gastein :D So it's time to move on green grass.

Let's start a discussion about Wimbledon and the Olympics ;)

Julia will be seeded in Wimbledon and will be in Top-23 (Petko, Kanepi out), it means Top-8 oponent in 4th round. So it's ok ;)

(I prefer to say nothing about V.W. and K.C.)...

May be able to play like in Australia :) But above all I hope for the defense of points from last year (3rd round).

Come on Julia!

--------------------

Ps: hope it won't be a picnic on thickets

Julia will be on position 22, toughest possible 1st round opponents are obviously Venus and Clijsters but also players like Makarova,Pironkova,Shvedova, Oudin etc. could be tricky.
I hope she gets a good draw and no Dutchie in 1st round.
Toughest possible 3rd round opponents are Bartoli,Li or Ivanovic also could face Zvonareva,Errani or Pennetta (which seems to be easier) or the surprise bags Cibulkova/Lisicki!

Will be interesting for sure, on a good day Julia will be able to beat any possible 1st round opponent anywy, except for Kim and Venus. Hopefully she learned from her mistakes from Paris and Gastein and stays focused.
Clay season was average this year but she had some success on hard court earlier, so grass also should suit here this year, she will have all chances as long as her serve works but she absolutely has to avoid cheap UEs when she has the chance to go for "easy" winners but that is mostly a question of concentration...

Görges def. Peer 62 62

Good start from Frau Görges, Peer really suits her game it seems, fantastic stats and no break for Peer in the whole match! :D
Next round vs Minella or Yakimova, has to win this as well but Julia has to be careful, she has to stay focused, I honestly don´t expect her as easy as today but should be a two sets win!!

Anyway, last time Julia lost in the first round of a slam was 2 years ago here at Wimbledon against Bartoli, can be really satisfied with that but I hope that she will take her chances in future at slams as well as QF in Paris was more than possible and here in Wimbledon 3rd round against Ivanovic already will be too tough, I guess, but we´ll see, everything is possible these days at WTA tour!

Great win. She is so consistent at GS it's really remarkable. Now it won't be easy against Ana. In their last encounter on grass (Eastbourne) she lost in straight sets, if I remember correctly. Well, 3rd round is already a good achievement though reaching the 4th or even progressing beyond would be nice, of course.

Yeah I agree but in Eastbourne Julia really played a non-match since that break-back if I recall at 4-2 in the first set by Ana. Her serve and ground-game went totally absent --

I really hope Julia rises unto the occasion in these 3rd. round matches, she really under-performs considerably and that's going to be a problem.

I think/hope she'll win in 3.

Sorry for Javier and other Ana fans -- I know both girls really really need it equally (that 4th. round) but I really want the win for Julia more than Julia herself. :p

Yakimova had some good stats against Minella and she can be tricky as former top 50 player althouh she obviously "sucked" recently!
But strange that Julia was totally without chance on return in 1st set but happy at least that she was able to win the TB then and was able to save a BP before.
But typical for Julia then that she isn´t able to keep focus then, 5 breaks in a row in 2nd set after a 1st set without any breaks, typical....but good that Yakimova served some DFs in 2nd set and Julia had no problems in the end.
Stats were quite good again, many winners as always, she really seems to play aggressive tennis on grass!!

Next is Ivanovic, interesting match! Both with many up´s and down´s in their games, I hope that Julia´s serve works and that Ana´s serve will be off, then she has a chance
But anyway, I expect Ivanovic to win but I am happy that she was able to win two matches here at least already :)

Happy Julia is into Wimbledon R3 ! :cheer:

But 7-6 against Yakimova is worrying. Julia definitely has to improve in order to beat Ivanovic. If her serve is off and her footwork/movement weak, then no chance to win.

Well, Ivanovic is the favourite in this match anyway, so nothing to lose for Julia really :p

One person who knows about the bad stuff is Daniel Nestor. He lost in men’s doubles last Friday and has now waited around four full days without playing his first-round mixed doubles alongside the fetching Julia Goerges of Germany.

On Tuesday evening, Nestor and Goerges got on Court 3 at 7:30 p.m. and warmed up only to have more spitting rain descend and force cancellation before a single point was played.

http://s19.postimage.org/m7ezv385f/nestorgoerges.jpg

I caught up with Nestor, above, returning to the locker room Tuesday evening with Goerges, and asked him why he had not just chucked the mixed doubles and returned home with his wife Natasha and three-year-old daughter Tiana after his doubles loss. After all, the three have been in Europe since leaving Toronto for Paris on May 21.

“Because I’m a man of my word,” he replied. He then added, with the wry humour that is his calling card, “we’ve had great practice sessions – a mixed doubles training camp.”

I'm not sure what was going on with those pics. Did they tell them they weren't allowed to smile? And how come Dani's pic is so much better than anyone else's? Dani's pic is exactly the kind of pic you want to have when you are subtly trying to "charm" a traffic officer out of giving you a speeding ticket, whereas almost everyone else looks like they were just arrested and put in jail.

The pictures are so bad I think officials will actually have a hard time recognising the players when they go to check their id.

Here is a list of who would be a good 1st round match for Julia, and who we want to avoid...

If Julia draws any of these players, it's almost a given she will advance...
- Veronica Cepede Royg
- Stephanie Vogt
- Mariana Duque Mariño
- Ons Jabeur
- Silvia Soler Espinosa
- Irina-Camelia Begu
- Shahar Pe'er
- Alona Bondarenko
- Agnes Szavay
- Anabel Medina Garrigues

So hopefully Julia draws one of those jackpots...

Here is who we want to avoid...
- Victoria Azarenka
- Agnieszka Radwańska
- Petra Kvitová
- Maria Sharapova
- Serena Williams
- Li Na

Every other match I think could go either way. Of course Julia will be the heavy favorite against some such as Suarez Navarro, and the underdog against maybe Lisicki or Kerber, but she can beat both, and likewise, lose to CSN. :tape:
However given that there is just 6 players in the draw that Julia could face in the 1st round where she really would have no hope, I think she has an excellent shot at advancing to the 2nd round, and a decent shot on even the 3rd round. Does anyone know when the draw is coming out?

What are welcome lines? Do you mean pick-up lines? She looks like she's an unprogrammed fembot or something. It's reminiscent of the look people have when they get flashed in the eyes with memory-erasing devices in movies like Men in Black.

What are pick-up lines ? Can`t get it.
The line where you have to wait until it`s your turn ?
I meant the thin white lines that you draw with the razor blade;). Just a little joke.
I guess she was in the dark before they made the pic.

Nice photo shop, Ziva !

Who's Germany's flag bearer ? Germany has lots of great champions for example in biathlon or something, can't remember really too good.

Biathlon at Olympic games in summer is news to me.

To be true, I`m no Olympic maniac. So I don`t know the procedure.
I guess they`ll announce the flagg bearer in the next few days.
Probably it`s Britta Steffen, the swimmer. She has some temperament and would be nice.
Last time it was Dirk Nowitzki when I remember right.
He is a very nice guy and a great sportsman but as German flaggbearer he is a little too introvert and as exciting as a lighthouse, imo.
If there is no extraordinary famous person they usually take the most successful. Then it might be a pretty unknown equestrian or canoeist.

I think somebody fresh and unexpected would be brisk for this job.
Julia indeed would be great.
She loves her country, would be excited as a little child and smile all over her face if she had this honour.:D
But not only the old daddies of the German Olympic comitee for sure have other ideas.;)

Thin white lines you draw with the razor blade... I still don't quite understand. Lines of coke or other illegal substances, things like that? Because Julia looks totally "out of it"?

Good work on the prison mugshot Ziva . Personally to me, even more than a mugshot, it really looks exactly how I would expect her to look after having her memory erased. You know, after the light flashes they stand there blankly staring into space for a minute or so. I'm sure that her mind was completely blank at that moment, I can't see the slightest hint of thought in her eyes.

Pick-up lines are the cheesy lines guys use when trying to "pick up" or "chat up" girls. I don't think they are used so much nowadays unless for a laugh, but stereotypical ones are things like "I seem to have lost my phone number. Can I have yours?" or "If I told you you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?"

The lines where you wait for your turn are queues.

Well, Julia would have to accomplish something big before she could be a flagbearer, but I'm sure she'd love to do it. I presume that Germany has a world champion at something at the moment, they would normally be the flagbearer. It sounds like perhaps there isn't a totally clearcut choice this time though, from what you are saying.

Looking at her performances she finds herself from time to time in these conditions also on court.:D

Non photogenic people can do what they want. They nearly always look strange or absent on pics.
But Julia usually is photogenic.
The photographer might have been in a hurry and made just one shot.
She probably wanted to look extra serious on this very official pic, and combined with the mydriasis we`ve got this result.

Thanks a again for the little English lesson.
There is obviously a very thin line to get misunderstood when it`s about subtelties communicating in a foreign language.
But now I`ve got you. We call it "Anmache".
The one with the phone number is not bad.

I was just googling it. The German flagbearer is not yet announced.
It might also be a dicsus thrower, Hartwig.
He is world champion, a tall guy, has some charisma and is pretty well known.
But he is also a little crazy, therefore they might not take him. Steffen is the favorite.
Who`s it for your country ?
It must be a sailor, as long as rugby is no Olympic sports.

Julia can beat Aga on grass or any other surface for that matter but she's clearly the heavy underdog here. Barf, I don't see her doing much unfortunately --

She really needs a huge amount of luck with all her game to do something but you never know.

If she somehow beats Aga the draw is good to go far. I expect Julia to play good though pretty like how she does in every majors until that famous 3rd. round.

Ice cold bath in a mountain lake? Brrr. Sounds too cold for me, but I guess you guys are in summer so a cool dip in a lake is rather refreshing. I think the situation is pretty tough for Julia, Aga also is very comfortable on this surface and court because of her recent run in Wimbledon, but I hope Julia can produce her best tennis and give herself a fighting chance.

It`s obvious that Julia has hardly any chance to get past Aga right now.

Quotes from Julia

"It was great, it was my first time representing Germany at the Olympics Games and it's my first time also on Centre Court at Wimbledon,” said Goerges, who had lost to Radwanska in two previous matches this year. “I'm pretty satisfied with the way I played. I'm relaxed here when I'm with the other athletes in the village. I played pretty aggressive and served well. I know if I play well it's dangerous for anyone and it was today, a lucky day."
Goerges hands Radwanska early exit
(http://2012.itftennis.com/olympics/news/articles/london-2012-day-2-goerges-hands-radwanska-early-exit.aspx)

"This here isn't Wimbledon, it's the Olympics. It's something different, something new. That's why I went very relaxed into the match.

I'm living in the Olympic village too and not in the house in Wimbledon, even if I have to get up earlier for this.

I've a lot of fun there and can experience this only once in 4 years."

Well, Kirilenko...

It`s time to clean up all these nemesis.;)

Exactly. We shouldn't act like this is the regular tour -- the Olympics is a different ball-game and Julia will be motivated so I'm not that particularly scared of the R3.

Additionally, Julia has defeated players she didn't have win against in the past so all these are positive signs.

Jules! :cheer:.Great win and great recovery from *5-3 down in the 2nd,she won the last 4 games of the match pretty easily :bolt:.A bit too much DFs though ,but 8 aces today :hearts:

Again this shows how important is to play for your country, somehow it makes you stronger mentally :yeah:

R3 against either Kirilenko/Watson,it´s doable ;)

I don't want to lack of fair-play but Heather would be an excellent match for Julia because considering how she psychologically entered her match on center court against Aga in Wimbledon she wouldn't give Julia much though opposition at this stage of the competition.

Obviously this is just a parenthesis but these factors would be of some help to make lovely Julia go deep in the draw.

I'm so surprised. I can't believe this. Who would have thought it is possible. Only 8 aces?

Now, not to brag, but I was pretty confident it would be an easy one (though apparently the second set was not so easy), as it should be if she's on. Hopefully the third round curse will be lifted. And it's a different third round. Now the toughest opponent was in the first round. Well, I'm pretty confident again :)

Kirilenko played well at Wimbledon, so we'll see. Can imagine to see this go to three sets.

Julia has to play well to beat Kirilenko!
The Russian is quite consistent usually but doesn´t have any bigger weapons IMO, Julia has to serve well and stay aggressive, just like she did against Radwanska, I hope that she will be consistent enough herself to win it.
But it would almost surprise me if Julia would be able to beat Rad,Lepchenko and Kirilenko in a row but we´ll see!

Julia into Olympics R3 ! :cheer:

Very happy Julia backed up her win over A.Radwanska. Great comeback from 3-5 to win 7-5.
Consistent Kirilenko next. Julia`s serve must work, she has to stay aggressive and move her feet.

Julia Goerges, who defeated Varvara Lepchenko, 63 75 : "The last time we played I lost to her, so I got a little bit of revenge this time," said Goerges, who took out No.2 seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the first round. "I'm pretty happy. I was serving well, playing aggressively and just kept fighting. She was fighting too. I expected a tough match and I got it."

3rd round against Kirilenko
H2H 2-0 for Kirilenko, Julia didn't even won a set yet

So the same scenario for the third time in a row. Julia seems to be in the mood and form to finally beat these girls who have owned her in the past though, so I think it might be time for her to get the win over Kirilenko.

Hmm, it was not meant to be, then. Anyway, an epic match against Aga and revenge against Lepchenko still make a good week.

While I agree it was a good week I can´t help but feel a little dissapointed,I thought she had a very good chance to reach the QFs :sobbing:

Deceiving from Julia. She really had her chance to the QF. I wished one day she was able to take that necessary step to make something really big.

Considering the way Kvitova just played against Kirilenko we can see that this was a really massive opportunity.

Hm, it just showed how good Kirilenko plays at the moment  It actually puts Julia's loss a bit into perspective. I think we can be pretty satisfied with Julia's performance at the Olympics. The win against Aga was one of the best matches she has ever played. She backed up this win with a solid performance against Lepchenko, a player she wasn't able to beat before (like Aga). Yes, she didn't make it to 4th round once more but, as I said, Kirilenko seems to be in great form, so losing against her is nothing to be ashamed of. I don't why I am so optimistic but I got the feeling that she has taken another step in her development as a professional tennis player during this week in London. The way she fought back in the match against A.Rad. at 4-4 in the 3rd or against Lepchenko at 3-5 in the 2nd set was really amazing. There she demonstrated a degree of mental toughness at crucial stages which I hadn't seen from her very often before. Maybe this time she really learned something :)

I agree with this, but I'm not that optimistic about the learning part. I have been for countless times and it wasn't so :)

Maybe in her case the learning process takes place in such small steps that we don't always recognize the improvements she actually made at first sight. But it happens - slowly - but still, it happens. :D That's at least my theory (or hope ).

Perhaps :) Another theory would be that it doesn't even matter, she isn't actually fit enough to play her game for a long time. Maybe both :)

Well, her (not so) new fitness coach (forgot his name) should be able to change this at least. I mean, this is his job.

Sure and I bet they're on the right track :) Also, I suppose the lack of motivation in smaller events can be related to this.

Even though she lost to Kirilenko this was a good run at the Olympics. :yeah:
Especially that stunning victory over Radwanska in the 1st round. :inlove:

I really think she's been underrated on grass so far. I think she can have more great results in the future on this surface.
And it might turn out to favor her game more than clay.

Well, she used to say (still does?) that grass is her favourite surface. And considering that she has the least experience on this surface and she had arguably her greatest win on it, it might be true :) I also thought her last two matches at Wimby from last year were quite good. Of course, she lost against Cibulkova, but it was only a matter of a few points here and there, as usual. She's underrated because grass is (or better, was) fast and takes time away from her, but there are usually more important factors that contribute to her losses (like serve and impatience).

I agree.
But as long as she remains so inconsistent on every surface it will be hard to evaluate for sure what's her best one. :sobbing:
