View Full Version : Is this comment racist?

Whilst browsing the Daily Mail website (I know I'm going to hell) there was an article about celebrities over doing the fake tan and in the comment section there were plenty of comments trashing the celebs then there was this:

Emilia Fox has more class, grace and beauty than the likes of Beyoncé or Rihanna. I implore the English Roses to ditch their ways and return the true English ideals that have been around for centuries. Why a Rose would want to emulate a weed is beyond me...and remember no matter how much sludge you throw over a Rose will never turn it into a weed it will only kill the beauty.

At first I didn't really pay it much attention but its played on my mind, its been positively rated by the readers of the daily mail. I usually hate when the race card is pulled at every little comment but this I couldn't ignore. That same commenter also accused British women of trying to be like Leona Lewis, Alesha Dixon and Halle Berry in another comment, so he seems to think there's something wrong with black and mixed race women.

What shocks me most is not only that the comment has been allowed to be posted as all comments are meant to be moderated but its been positively rated by other readers.

It certainly appears that way.

Also, who is Emilia Fox?

I would agree with your assessment. Definitely racist.

Yes. But I've seen stuff that was much more crass posted on other sites. Not that we should excuse such things, ever.

I just don't understand how any moderator would be able to think that this was an appropriate comment. I suppose that's the kind of racism that the Daily Mail promotes, that kind of subtle attack that points to the collapse of British society being directly connected to black/asian people.

That would be her:

She was in The Pianist and is also in the tv show Silent Witness.

I must be missing something. It is a racist comment because it calls a British woman a Rose and calls two non-British women, who just so happen to be black, weeds? I fail to see how race comes into play.

Are there no Black or mixed race British women?

That's funny because I never thought tanning equated wanting to be black  I guess that commenter does though. Do people think that way?

Are there no Black or mixed race British women?

The OP mentioned two of them

Still don't see it. It's a dig on spray tans, not race.

He's saying there's something wrong with the white Emilia Fox is trying to be like a pair of black women by using a spray on tan. He also equates those black women with weeds, and refers to the white one as a rose. If that's not racist I don't know what is.

That part is not racist. Comparing black women to weeds can be seen as racist though.

Not really, it's about why would you be trying to look like those black weeds when looking British (white implied) is a rose. If it was a dig on spray tan why bother to bring two black women (weeds) into the conversation.

The commenter seems to think that being fair-skinned is a "true British ideal," so yes, obviously racist. I think one would have to try pretty hard to find something not racist about this.

I disagree, Dominic. You can't separate the two statements. He's only saying there's something wrong with wanting to emulate black women because there is something wrong with black women - hence the use of the term weed. He's not imploring women as a whole to love and accept themselves for what they are. He's saying one group (white, English "roses") are superior to another. And that is racism.

ITA. This tanning issue is just a cover up for a reason to make racist statements. And like I said earlier, I really don't think white people go out to tan themselves because they want to look black. They do it to look like tanned white people

I don't know what's NOT racist abou that comment.

And he ends with comparing black women to mud trying to ruin a white rose.

I don't think he knows but at one time the term "rose" was used to be a back handed compliment and insult to mixed race women.

I'm glad I'm not the only one, by allowing that comment the Mail is effectively admitting its a racist paper. I thought they were in denial about their racist ways.

As stated above I don't think people tan to try and be black, they do it because its what we're told is fashionable. That man is just using this as a an excuse to air their racism.

Yes racist. I don't even like Beyonce and Rihanna but maybe a better comparison would've been to Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian? They are the true weeds.

Well I am seperating them, I'm saying the first part of the statement is not racist, it's basically expressing his disain for spray tan. I agree that the comparing black women to weeds though is racist.

It's unnecessary to bring race into it. Just call her a slut, it's equally true :oh:.
