There definitely hasn't been that many album releases so far that could be considered AOTY nomination material. Off the top of my head, I can only think of:

Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto
Black Keys - El Camino
Flo + The Machine - Ceremonials
Jack White - Blunderbuss (They love to throw in an indie album. Also, White Stripes have been nominated before)

And if Grammy truly appreciate talent, this award show will be Brit dominated.
Not just Florence, but Ben Howard, alt-fucking-J, Jessie Ware, Lianne Le Havas, Lucy Rose, The xx, Of Monsters and Men.

Alas, none will be nominated, maybe except Florence because she broke out early. Even then I think she'd lose to people like Bieber/Jepsen.
But as long as she performs that night and slays my soul, she'll be alright.

the only performers of note are:

Song of the Year is specifically a songwriter's award. So the writing of the music and lyrics.

Record of the Year goes to the artist, the producer, and the engineer, so ostensibly who makes the most out of said music and lyrics.

Record also goes to the producers, mixers, and engineers. It's for all aspects of the record.

But I don't think many of the voters really distinguish or know the differences between Record & Song any more

For example, "Single Ladies" won Song of the Year, when it really should have won Record of the Year. It's a great recording, but the lyrics don't deserve such a high honor

I think any of those albums really would've been a surprise. No one album really dominated this year in music and the three or four songs that dominated the charts were all either by new people out of nowhere (We Are Young, STIUTK, Call Me Maybe) or were really bad songs and no one know how they spent 9 weeks at number 1 (One More Night). I feel like this was especially true since Adele had clearly blown every away in 2011. I hope 2013 is stronger year than 2012 so we can have a show that is at least bearable to watch.
