As Ula lost today. I'm creating a thread to follow her next tournaments.
She plays 75k Nottingham, then WTA in Birmingham and WTA in s'Hertogenbosch.
Agnieszka plays Eastbourne as a top seed. :)

"Next week there's ITF in England and I'm now thinking if to go there urgently to collect some points, I must think about it for a moment. It's a grass tournament so I hope I could pick up some points. I will decide today. I must talk to dad, Tomek and see if it will pay off".

I hope she will go. :)

Seems like Elena Baltacha has a lot of respect to both Radwanska sisters:

http://www.lta.org.uk/fans-major-events/Nottingham-Festival-of-Tennis/News/2012/James-Ward--Elena-Baltacha-Pave-the-way-for-British-Success/

“Tomorrow I will be playing Radwanska which will be a difficult match. I played her about three weeks ago in Prague and although I beat her in two sets it was a challenging game and she is a great player. Hopefully tomorrow we will be out on the grass and I can raise my game again and play like I did today.”

http://www.lta.org.uk/fans-major-events/Nottingham-Festival-of-Tennis/News/2012/Keothavong-Victorious-in-quarter-finals-of-AEGON-Trophy/

Elsewhere, Urszula Radwanska ended Elena Baltacha’s AEGON Trophy 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in a nail-biting match. The British Number one said: “That was a really tough game, she played really well and there was really nothing else I could have done, she was just better than me today.

“It is a shame that I didn’t get on the grass today, but it was a good game and she challenged me and came out on top, I can’t say more than she played a fantastic game of tennis.”

I know Elena is a nice girl. Shame for her but I hope she will get WC to Olympics as a British player and will make her dream come true. :awww:

Number seven seed Urszula Radwanska has won the AEGON Trophy in Nottingham, defeating American qualifier Coco Vandeweghe in a topsy-turvy final, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

The Pole took control of the match from the off, winning the opening set by a comfortable margin. But Vandeweghe, who had beaten Britain’s Anne Keothavong 6-3, 6-2 in the semi-final earlier in the day, was determined to put up a fight.

Some big serves and powerful stroke play in the second ensured the final would go down to the wire as the American produced her best tennis of the match.

Unfortunately Vandeweghe was unable to hit the heights of the middle set and Radwanska closed the match out with aplomb.

“I’m so pleased with the win,” said the 21-year-old, who is sister to world number three Agnieszka Radwanska. “It’s a great way to kick off my grass court season and to win against such a tough opponent makes me very happy.

“Coco is a really powerful player and has a great serve; I knew I had to attack early to get her off her game. The conditions were quite challenging with one end of the court very windy and the other less so – it was hard to get a rhythm going.

“I knew she would hit the ball hard but I just tried to concentrate on my performance and move her around the court. I lost a bit of concentration in the second set which let her back in and she certainly picked up her game then – thankfully I was able to pull it together again.”

Vandeweghe’s route to the final was marathon like as she battled her way through qualifying before taking her place in the show piece event.

Despite falling at the final hurdle the world number 157 was delighted with her week’s work.

“It’s been a while since I’ve played eight matches in a week,” said the 20-year-old. “Playing two matches on finals day wasn’t ideal but the weather has dictated that and it couldn’t be helped.

“Urszula played great, she got a lot of balls back and kept forcing me to play that extra shot – overall it’s been a brilliant week.”

I think she'd need to qualify for Eastbourne, no? If so and she goes deep in Birmingham, she can't do both (playing final rounds in Bham and playing in Eastbourne). She's directly in in Eastbourne and probably wouldn't start until Tuesday.

Seriously, she has to improve her second serve, 24% points won on it is problematic. Her first serve has become a weapon but it's completely useless when it doesn't work, and when she has to hit a second serve which she generally knows won't be efficient at all: she even looks sometimes totally resigned when she hits it.

We weren't be able to watch the match so it's difficult to comment this defeat more, as Pironkova is one of the best grass court player nowadays. Just too bad Aga didn't win this break point at 4-4*...

Aga wasn't playing well at RG either.
She wasn't playing well against Kuznetsova. Against Jovanovski, she hardly could play any better (not that it matters too much with her kamikaze tennis) - in the second set 10 winners and no unforced errors.

Even though Ula has had great grass season, I can't say I'm warming up to her. Her antics are annoying (though sometimes hilarious) and she doesn't have a champion's mentality - Aga wouldn't throw in the towel like that after the first set. Well Ula still tried at times but seemed to be lacking any conviction in her game and body language really.

http://www.thetennisspace.com/opinion/radwanska-exclusive-im-disappointed-by-gilles-simon/

Agnieszka on the Gilles Simon prize-money controversy (the Frenchman has suggested that female players should not have equal prize-money at Wimbledon):
“That disappoints me because the girls are working as hard as the guys, so why should we have less money? Of course, the men are playing longer matches – their matches are best-of-five sets and ours are best-of-three sets. We’re women so we cannot play five sets. But I think we should have the same money. That’s only fair. It might be true that other male players think like this, but this has been talked about for many years. It’s fair for the girls to have the same money.”

Agnieszka on the Wimbledon grass:
“There are no grass courts in Poland. We have fake grass, that’s all. People in Poland are always trying to imagine what it’s like to play on real grass. It’s very tough to take care of grass courts in Poland. I remember in 2005, when I won the junior Wimbledon title, it was my first trip to England and the first time that I played on grass. From the first practice, I liked grass, and I really felt good on the surface. I have good memories of that summer so since then I’ve continued to have fun. Grass is so different to other surfaces – it’s not like carpet, or clay, or hard. It’s just so different to everything else. Grass is a surface that you either like or you don’t. You can’t practise on it that much. You just have to like it.”

Agnieszka on her Wimbledon ambitions:
“A grand slam is a grand slam, but Wimbledon is the grand slam with the biggest history. This is the always the most popular grand slam on tour. If I could choose one grand slam to win, I would choose Wimbledon. Everything is different at Wimbledon, with the courts, everything around them and the white clothes as well. That’s why it feels special.”

Agnieszka on possibly leaving Wimbledon as the new world No 1:
“I think everyone wants to do that, that’s everyone’s ambition. I will do everything in my power to become the world No 1 and to win a grand slam.”

Agnieszka on Heather Watson, her third-round opponent:
“I’ve never played Heather before, and to be honest I don’t know her at all, I don’t know how she is playing. I don’t mind playing here with everybody against me, that’s okay.”

She needs her first serve so much... Too bad she couldn't hold three times after she had made the break (*1-0 second set, *4-3 second set, *1-0 third set...). She's clearly not playing at her best and obviously, she's quite nervous at times (her errors at the end of the 2nd set for example).

Agnieszka Radwanska, speaking to BBC TV's Phil Jones: "I'm just very, very happy. It's the first time I've reached the semi-finals. There's no word to describe it. Today for me was like 40 hours. It's never easy with the conditions and we ended up playing the roof. In the end, I'm happy I got through in three sets. They told me right away when we finsighed on Court One that we might move to Centre. But I'm happier to finish in one day rather than go to the next day. I was just trying to be focused on every point and focused on my serve."

Kerber now  Aga was in troubles in matches against her even when she wasn't as good as she's nowadays... But we should stay positive :yeah: If Aga beats Serena in the final she'll be new Number 1! It'd be fantastic to see her there right after winning Wimbledon.

Rest Maria!
Jul 3rd, 2012, 09:28 PM
Aga's biggest asset - her 1st serve - was neutralized today in two ways - 1. Kirilenko reads Aga's serve exceptionally well - they probably spent a lot of time together practicing when they were doubles partners. 2. the balls were damp and heavier, thus slower than usual (not counting the final 4 games).

It's a good thing Aga got a tough match today though, she'll be mentally prepared for a tougher battle on Thursday.

The fact that this match was so close and dramatic makes it even more special.
Glad she has a day off from singles now. Hopefully she will calm down after this victory and come out focused and determined against Angelique. Nothing to lose!
Good luck in double for now :)

They probably decided Aga needs to be in top shape tomorrow, a potential 3 hours long cat fight with Errani/Vinci would not help the cause. Especially when you think about gazillion rain delays that are bound to happen.

Grand Slam revenge :p Remember Kiri beat Aga at US Open 2009 in a heartbreaking match 6-4 2-6 6-4 :(

US Open 2009 and Wimbledon 2012 are the only times they met at a Grand Slam. Kiri celebrated the US Open win in a pathetic way, really over the top. Aga hater TheBoiledEgg had this reaction as an avatar for long time. And now we have the last laugh. Aga got her sweet Grand Slam revenge on Kiri. Everything is in the right order again ;)

Last year Kerber celebrated her victory over Aga in a much worse fashion, very over the top, almost like King King lol. Let's see if Aga's vow not to see that celebration ever again is as strong as it is with Kirilenko's one.

rucolo
Jul 4th, 2012, 05:16 PM
Why do you now compare Kerber and Kirilenko? It was only about Aga vs Kirilenko :o

Anyway about the US Open 2009 match. I still remember Kiri screaming and fistpumping all match like crazy, and then this annoying double-fistpump after she won. Even several times. I can`t remember, but I really doubt Kerber did the same

And Kerber`s US Open 2011 win over Aga was EXTREMELY important for her. Before this Angelique was in very poor form, even considered retiring. Shows how big this win over Aga was for her and what it meant to her. Angelique did nothing wrong and had every right to be happy about this great win over a Top player. This was the start of her new career :yeah:

Kirilenko`s 2009 win over Aga was only in R2 of US Open, and now Angelique and Aga play in Wimbledon SF! See the difference. It would be HUGE for Angelique to reach a Wimbledon final, a German in a Grand Slam final since many many years. Angelique has every right in this world to celebrate this win (if she wins) as much as she wants to. It has nothing to do with beating Aga, it is only about the win in a Grand Slam SF! ;)

Rest Maria!

Kirilenko`s 2009 win over Aga was only in R2 of US Open
So was last year's Kerber-Radwanska match.

Regardless, I'm sure any player seeing the opponent celebrating makes a vow not to see that celebration again. Since Aga won the last match against Kerber, we'll see tomorrow if she can keep that vow alive.;)
