View Full Version : Madonna & Lady Gaga's 'Express Yourself' v. 'Born This Way' Drama Continues (VIDEO)

Perhaps it's because Madge hasn't been in the spotlight much since her album, MDNA, topped the Billboard charts (and suffered a subsequent nosedive in sales), but she recently went out of her way to once again remind everyone that she is, in fact, older than Lady Gaga.

The queen of pop was performing "Express Yourself" at a concert in Israel when she suddenly trotted out a cover of "Born This Way." Of course, the two tracks blended seamlessly. Though she stayed mum on Gaga's song for some time after its release, Madge eventually said she felt the single was "reductive" and undoubtedly influenced by her earlier work.

The whole affair had an air of condescension, as if Madonna was wielding the cover like Jay-Z did when he silenced Noel Gallagher and other critics by performing "Wonderwall" at Glastonbury. (The Oasis singer had taken great umbrage at the fact that a rapper had been chosen to headline the festival.)

So what say you, readers? Was Madonna rubbing some salt in Gaga's wound (the latter had recently canceled a show after she faced threats from conservative religious groups), or was she merely winking at the controversy while celebrating the younger performer?

Ever since she competed with MJ.

I just love how Madonna feels so entitled even though she's been sued dozens of times for copyright infringement as well as breach of contract, and the fact that she takes many of her images (no not ideas which are intangible) from other famous artists before her. This includes video clips, album covers, photoshoots, outfits etc.

You'd think she would understand how it feels to be accused of copying other people's works and looks as she is/was constantly accused of being a copy of Marilyn Monroe. And besides, the only similar thing between Express Yourself and Born This Way is the chord progression.

also I just don't get how Madonna could bash or throw shade at someone who looks up to her and only has nice things to say about her. Perhaps she really does thrive on other artist's careers

The Queen of Shade. First showing how Born This Way is Express Yourself 2.0 and then ending with "She's Not Me" :haha:

LOL this is such a fake controversy. As if Madonna or GaGa had anything to do with the way these songs sound. If the producers of both songs don't see a problem, there isn't a problem.

Don't you think they're both in on it? I mean, I can hardly imagine using someone's music that she actually doesn't like. I'm sure she respects Gags and likes the song. If she hated her and/or the song, why would she 'demean' herself and sing it?

It's obviously to get people talking and based on this thread, it worked.

The bitch is going to get credited and receive royalties when this concert is broadcast and/or sold on DVD. If anything Madonna is acknowledging that artists take and borrow from other artists ALL the time (something Basic Gaga failed to do with BTW). Child if you knew anything you'd know she does covers/mashups on her tours ALL the time.

I'm amazed at how sens-a-tive yall lil monsters everytime Germannotta is mentioned in the same sentence as the Queen

ETA: I love how both songs transition so perfectly together :oh:

Pretty sure if you write a song you have something to do with the way it sounds

Like papa_action said, artists do cover of other artists' songs all the time. I'm sure this is not the first time Madonna has done this. Plus she needs to give her tour some exposure and this is pretty much ideal.

Madge Covers CaCa Covering Madge

File this under: Some All About Eve shit.

Madge will start twerking her muscled prune crotch for the children in her MDNA tour in Tel Aviv this Thursday, and over the weekend someone uploaded rehearsal footage (via HuffPo) of her showing us that some things get better with age, like all-natural ****iness. Remember when the gays had to take sides (I chose the side marked "Stacey Q FOREVER") after Lady CaCa Xerox copied "Express Yourself" and labeled it "Born This Way"? Well, Madge is keeping the bitchiness going by performing a mash-up (I like to call the Reductive Remix) of "Express Yourself" and "Born This Way" followed by "She's Not Me." If that isn't a subtle chancleta slap to the tuck, I don't know what is. Madge earned a AARP black card for that brilliant **** stunt move. Do it, Madge! Put that copy + paste bitch in her place and let her know that abuelitas are never EVER the one.

:rolls: you need to come harder next time bb. That aishamusic site makes me sad because it really gives some of yall so much hope .

Tell me, do you have any idea how many of those copyright infringement suits have actually been heard by a court of law, Steven? What was the evidence presented in support of the plaintiff's claims? Was it admissible? Have you heard and had the opportunity to make a conclusion about the alleged copyright violation yourself (i.e. have you heard the corresponding songs/seen the videos/photographs etc?) What was the holding in those cases?

Yes I'm waiting.

As for the Marilyn "ripoffs", I'm not sure when you were born Steven but everyone born before 2006 and their mother knows Madonna was inspired by Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo and other old Hollywood stars. It's patently obvious and she's said it a zillion times. The difference between Lady Gaga-Madonna and Madonna-Marilyn is that a) Marilyn was long dead when Madonna 'copied' her b) Madonna didn't deny Marilyn's influence and claim something like the Material Girl video was inspired by Marilyn's contemporaries when it obviously wasn't (a la Gaga when she claimed BTW as inspired by Whitney Houston :haha: Lying bitch!!).

And I must say I'm sorry for the bad rep. I was spreading reps because I wanted to good rep oliviasmith for something she said in the Maria-Cadantu thread in GM. I hope you understand it was of utmost importance.

Like papa_action said, artists do cover of other artists' songs all the time. I'm sure this is not the first time Madonna has done this. Plus she needs to give her tour some exposure and this is pretty much ideal.

Yep, I'm sure Madonna was not "shading" Donna Summer when she did this:

or the Tramps when she did this

What about MJ when she did this...

Well said! :worship: I totally get Madonna's cheeky sense of humor but she is really coming off like a bitter, OLD has-been resentful of TODAY'S musical "It" girl. On the other hand, this could be another ploy by Madge to stay relevant by latching on to a current star like she did Britney some years ago. :p
