Hi again, guys.

Incidentally, I currently live in Melbourne and will get to at least some of the 2003 Oz Open. I already have some quarter finals tickets and will probably get along to some of the earlier rounds.

As for my favourite players, my sig gives a fair idea, I reckon... at least re the girls. But I actually like almost everyone. :) As for the boys, I like Marat, Lleyton, Andre and a few others. I play the IWA game over at ATPworld as Anastasia Myskina, so I'll have to give Nastya a higher priority; I play the FATP game as Pete Sampras. I didn't like Pete that much in his dominant years, but I feel a bit sentimental about him now. I was happy for him to win the US Open this year.

I hope all our friends come in and make this a good thread. I'd like to see knopfler, whorehand, the cat, apoet, posh (Alexis), i-girl, sartrista, saki, stinger (Marri), layla, and quite a list of others say hi to us. (If I list any more, those whom I forget will be offended.) Who else do we want to turn up?? I.e., who are our friends?

Blues rocked by AFL penalty
2:21:45 AM Sat 23 November, 2002
Paul Gough
afl.com.au

The Carlton Football Club is reeling after the AFL handed down the toughest penalty in its history for salary cap breaches with new Blues president Ian Collins so shocked by the AFL Commission’s decision he now believes the entire future of his club is under threat.

The Blues have not only lost their prized two first selections in Sunday’s National AFL Draft but also their second and third round picks meaning their first selection will now not be until pick 45.

But it doesn’t end there for the Blues, who have also lost their first and second round selections in the 2003 National AFL Draft as well as the first pick in the this year’s pre-season draft on December 17.

This will not only cost the club the chance of recruiting future champions such as Brendan Goddard and Daniel Wells – who were certain to be chosen at number one and two by the Blues on Sunday – but robs new coach Denis Pagan of the chance to quickly re-build the club’s playing stocks after it finished 2002 with the first wooden spoon in the Blues’ history.

But it is the extent of the fines which have been imposed on Carlton for its latest salary cap breaches which have shaken the club’s new board.

As well as copping a fine of just over $57,000 – which was suspended from two years ago when the Blues were last found guilty of breaching the salary cap – the Blues have also been fined nearly an extra $850,000 bringing their total fines to close to $1 million or $930,000 to be exact.

And considering the club is believed to be on course to already post a financial loss of at least $500,000 in 2002 – there are legitimate concerns amongst the new Blues board that the club will be unable to pay the fine – which must be paid by December 31, 2003.

“A fine of this magnitude would push any club to the brink,” a shocked Carlton president Ian Collins said at the conclusion of the seven hour hearing into the Blues’ salary cap breaches.

The Blues were found guilty of three of the four charges they faced for making illegal payments to players.

The players weren’t officially disclosed but Collins referred to two “icons” of the club – believed to be Stephen Silvagni and Craig Bradley. The other case has been adjourned pending further investigation.

The offences were committed under the leadership of the club’s recently ousted board – led by the controversial former president John Elliott and comes after the club was found guilty of two previous salary cap breaches.

The AFL shrugged off suggestions it had been too harsh on Carlton with commission chairman Ron Evans describing the Blues’ latest salary cap breaches “as a deliberate, elaborate and sophisticated scheme to break the player payment rules.”

Evans said the scheme, which involved payments into secret trust accounts or to third parties was only detected following a lengthy investigation by the league’s investigator Ken Wood.

“This is their (Carlton’s) third breach of the (player payment) rules since 1998,” Evans said.

Evans said the salary cap and draft were fundamental to the success of the AFL competition adding “there is no room in our game for blatant cheating.”

And while he said he felt sympathy for Carlton supporters – whose hopes of seeing their side make a quick revival in 2003 now appear shattered – but said the commission had to consider all 16 clubs when handing down its decision.

“The Carlton members and supporters ought to feel betrayed by the actions of their club,” Evans said.

However the Blues have not ruled out challenging the AFL’s decision, even though there is no scope to do so under AFL rules meaning their only option would be to take court action.

New president Collins, while critical of the role the previous board played in breaching the salary cap – could barely contain his anger at the AFL after its decision was handed down in the early hours of Saturday morning.

“The penalties don’t fit the crime,” he said.

“This is a bloody-minded decision and relationships between the AFL and Carlton are strained to say the least.”

That was obvious when Carlton insisted on speaking to the media before the AFL following the league’s decision - much to the anger of AFL football operations manager Andrew Demetriou, who had to be restrained from entering the media conference room by the Blues’ communications manager Ian Coutts.

Collins said the decision would affect both the Blues’ finances and playing strengths and cast a cloud over the club’s preparations for the 2003 season.

“We’re extremely disappointed,” Collins said.

“This decision gives Carlton little incentive in 2003.”

But while Carlton’s entire future both on and off the field is now under threat – the decision to strip the Blues of their prized first two selections is great news for St Kilda and the Kangaroos.

Instead of having selections three and four respectively, those clubs will now have the prized first two picks meaning they have the choice of recruiting the talented Goddard, Wells or Steven Salopek, who are clearly the stand-out youngsters in this year’s draft.

It looks all a bit over the top to me. The people that benefited and the people who set up the deals are no longer part of the club.

For the AFL to be viable it must have Carlton, Collingwood and Essendon. If Carlton goes under, then the AFL is cutting their own throats

jenn
Nov 23rd, 2002, 01:56 AM
I agree Picol, although Carlton definitely need to be punished as their breach was quite appaling, you cannot risk the financial stability of one of the leagues top 3 clubs, especially when they are already at the bottom of the ladder

The AFL are really facing a crisis now as Carlton is apparently withdrawing from the 2003 season. The Afl has shut down there "Electronic Contact" address because of over 150,000 e-mails complaining about the way they have handled the matter. I am not a Carlton fan though it is clear to me that the AFL has made a huge mistake that only a back peddle will fix. Fine the club or take away there first 2 picks. $930000 fine is enough, removing all picks for the next 12 months on top of it is beyond punishment.

AFL facing a crisis? I don't think so. Why would they care that one little team and its supporters are pissed off? It's not like the team has the support of Adelaide or Collingwood (Carlton have lost even more supporters after their wooden spoon winning effort this year)...but yes, personally I think they should have had the fine or the lack of draft pics, not both

When a AFL manager gets thrown out, then physically held back during a press conferance prooves to me you have a hierachy out of control. I have done my checking on this and Carlton are not a little team. In fact they make up 15% of the whole AFL support base. Take that out of the equation then you have a football code in crisis.

Why was the AFL manager chucked out? He was pissed off the media wanted to talk to the Carlton directors and not him.

I ask this simple question. The board and players involved with the Bulldogs rort were still on the pay roll when the NRL handed down there decision. None of the 4 players or any member of the board that were involved in the Carlton mess are involved in the club now. Why be punished for something that was out of your control?

Not a "little" club, but 15% is exaggerating. Maybe 15% of the Victorian AFL support, but not for the whole country

Picol
Nov 23rd, 2002, 07:09 AM
1. Essendon 17%
2. Collingwood 16%
3. Carlton 15%
4. Port Adelaide 11%
5. Brisbane Lions 9%
6. Adelaide 8%

The other teams make up the remaining 24% lead by West coast and Fremantle.

The AFL cannot afford any of the Top 6 to go under and most certainly not at there own hands.

2284
Nov 23rd, 2002, 07:10 AM
Where are you getting your stats from?

Picol
Nov 23rd, 2002, 07:14 AM
The stats come from the "Official members Database" e-mailed to all financial members of a AFL Club. Piet and I are members of Essendon. Which maybe part of the reason I was so happy to post them :p

Picol
Nov 23rd, 2002, 07:16 AM
I lie. It is the only reason I posted them. Go the Bombers :D

2284
Nov 23rd, 2002, 07:17 AM
Yes, FINANCIAL members...that's why. Carlton isn't exactly a low-income area

2284
Nov 23rd, 2002, 07:19 AM
...but I'm not disputing the fact that Essendon are popular, I'm merely pointing out that Essendon, Collingwood and the 2 Adelaide teams...and probably quite a few others are more popular than Carlton

Picol
Nov 23rd, 2002, 07:25 AM
I don't think there would be too many more popular then Carlton. Maybe 3 or 4. My point remains they are a integral part of the AFL and they really cannot do without them, against say a St.Kilda or Kangaroos.

2284
Nov 23rd, 2002, 07:28 AM
I can see your point when you compare them to St Kilda and North Melbourne, but losing 1 club would not mean the end of the AFL...a substantial loss in profits, but not bankruptcy

Picol
Nov 23rd, 2002, 07:33 AM
Well it could in the bounds that the AFL did not break even in 2002. Add a major draw card withdrawing or being liquidated then you are looking at even more substantial losses. Add to the fact the majority are against the AFL in what they have done and add to the fact the the one of the leading lights of the AFL has made a complete arse of himself in front of the media, then yep, you have some majjor problems.

Sorry, you've lost me. Wanna try again?

The club is a corporate entity. It is that entity that is being punished. Are you suggesting that, for example, a business corporation (a car manufacturer, say, or a fast-food conglomerate) can avoid punishment for its criminal or negligent actions if it has new directors or staff since the actions took place? That would be a far-fetched idea. Maybe I've misunderstood you, but your question, far from striking me as simple, struck me as rather odd and obscure.

As I say, I may not be following you, so by all means explain again. :)

Hi, Starry!!!!!

Picol
Nov 23rd, 2002, 10:41 AM
It is not that hard to understand.

If a "Business" is found negilent for something that was done 3-5 years ago but no longer has the same staff or board of Directors and no longer practices the same set up, why should they be punished?. The AFL have now set a precedent. They can now do to other clubs what they have done to Carlton, no matter how old the complaint and they have a complete disreguard for circumstances.

I have never said Carlton should not of been punished. But they have been punished far outside their crimes. I would support Carlton withdrawing from the 2003 season and just seeing the effect of 26,500 less supporters each week at the football affects the AFL and the other clubs. If the AFL doesn't have the money, the clubs are not going to get it either.

It is a simple equation. The AFL is much more dependant on Carlton then Carlton is on it.

The fact that talk about a break away competition involving Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and Richmond has resurfaced is a strong indication that many are not happy with the AFL.

That's what I thought you were saying but the law doesn't work like that. Basically the whole idea of corporate personality ensures that legal rights AND liabilities are with the company, regardless of whether there is a change in the staff and board of directors.

That's why I didn't understand it..... it's coz I'm a lawyer (among other things) and I know that what you're saying is totally contrary to how our legal system works. There are good reasons why it works as it does, too. Otherwise, if you got hit by a negligently driven bus the bus company could avoid you suing it if they'd sacked the driver and the board members had changed.

This is not a case of "the law is an ass." :)

Now I can see some argument for *leniency* perhaps if Carlton has tried to do the right thing, etc, but it can't be let off the hook. The clubs all have to know that if they are caught they get punished, and it won't do them any good pleading that that was the "old" club under different directors.

Personally, I'm a Hawthorn supporter  so I don't much care what happens to that cheating Carlton club. But I don't want it to go out of business. Then again, if *any* corporate entity seriously breaches the rules that apply to it this can have legal consequences that may force it out of business. People who run them know that.

The best result would be if the AFL's decision had some legal flaw in it and Carlton successfully challenged it in the courts. It'd be nice if it got off a little bit more lightly, just enough to be able to keep going in 2003.

What do the Aussies and others think of the "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie..." chant? Thumbs up or thumbs down?

Thumbs down for me. I cringe when I hear it. Someone from Britain can probably tell us the exact origins, but from what I've heard, the "Aussie, Oi..." is a rip-off of a Welsh soccer chant that goes "Oggie, oggie, oggie, oi, oi, oi."

I know we used to be a convict colony, but did we have to steal THAT!? ;)

What does everyone else think of it?

What do the Aussies and others think of the "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie..." chant? Thumbs up or thumbs down?

Thumbs down for me. I cringe when I hear it. Someone from Britain can probably tell us the exact origins, but from what I've heard, the "Aussie, Oi..." is a rip-off of a Welsh soccer chant that goes "Oggie, oggie, oggie, oi, oi, oi."

I know we used to be a convict colony, but did we have to steal THAT!? ;)

What does everyone else think of it?

Hi al :wavey:

lol I don't really like that chant much either :p It sounds too "yobbo" for my sophisticated tastes  (Really it just grates on my eardrums. then again it is good to see aussies being patriotic ;) )

i hate chanting..but i ened up not only chanting but singing some aussie classic like 'waltzing matilda' etc. when Nicole Pratt was playing her first round at the Olympics! i blame the crowd for being so rowdy ...

i really couldnt stand the fedaddicts or whatever they were at the wollongong fed cup...i know what theyre doing at its root is a good thing, but cmon where was the variety! "if ur aussie and u know it pat your head" "if your aussie and you know it turn around"...it was OK the first few times, but there is only so much i can stand!

Yes the Kennett Government fucked up. But the electorate is of a very forgiving constitution - don't forget the economic ruin the Cain/Kirner years left us in, and only 7 years later people forgave them and voted Bracksy in. What do they say, two weeks is an eternity in politics? I don't think Doyle will win, but Bracks has hardly set the world on fire with reform. Stranger things have happened

ummm, actually Bracks has contributed A LOT towards reversing everything Kennett did...and Kennett was stupid enough to leave a huge surplus so that Bracks could use it to make himself look good...and the years of Joan were bad, but the fact remains that a premier can not stop a recession

The problem was Kennett was arrogant and thought that the commanding financial position he had given victoria would be enough to get him over the line - might I add that it almost did, considering that Bracksy is only in power with the help of three independants. Certainly there was a huge swing against the libs last time, but in no way was it a "landslide". Before election night he would never have even contemplated that his huge surplus would have fallen into the hands of a labor government. That was him - arrogant and stupid - the reason for his defeat.

And how much of Kirner's mismanagement can really be contributed to the recession? I think you are give both her and John before her a little too much slack. it was an horrendous situation.

Yes, he was arrogant and stupid, but I believe that the Victorian piblic are intelligent enough to vote on political issues rather than personalities (Did I just say that? How naieve of me!)...so I think his main problem is that he is a good businessman, but hospitals and education systems can not be run as businesses. The funding cuts to schools and hospitals were an absolute disaster.

A bit slack, maybe, but that still can't change a situation that is not specific to this state. Even the Federal government can't avoid a recession if it is caused by a lack in business confidence due to overseas factors

I absolutely agree with that whole statement, except as you illuded to I think the electorate can sometimes be perusaded by personality :p ANd part of the reason that his policies were so dehuman were becuase he was arrogant and stupid. If he had of opened his ears and listened he might have been able to make his last budget before the election more rewarding for the public through spending on hospitals, schools, police etc. He was so engrossed in his theories of economic management that were initially beneficial that he forgot about the needs of the people and sat on a big fat surplus that could have got him reelected.

And besides this isn't about Kennett, the libs have a whole new leader with a totally different leadership style. So I don't think we will see those same mistakes again hopefully.

Anyway, I have to go. its been nice talking politics with you :wavey:

BTW Happy Birthday :)

People in Sydney/NSW, I never thought I'd say this but wasn't today a glorious day with ALL THAT RAIN? :D My local creek was flooded again for the first time in MONTHS! :)

Australians, especially South Australians, there's a solar eclipse occurring on 4th December, it will be a TOTAL eclipse in South Australia and a partial eclipse in other states. I can't wait :)

Hmmmm, reckon I'll give Bracksy my vote. :)

(In my experience, politicians on the average are actually more idealistic and less venal than people in most other professions. Some individuals bring the rest into disrepute, but that is the case with any other group in the community.)
