First off I should apologize for the lack of an exciting title. I am open to edit suggestions. ;)

All in all with the exception of a possible meeting with Azarenka in round 4, I think it's a good draw. I don't know a whole lot about Yakimova but I seem to recall a thread a month or so back that had her losing in the first round of a 10k. :tape: And then the possibility of a Q or Martinez Sanchez who hasn't had good clay results this year.

Coming into the event Lucie is 11-2 on clay courts. Charleston F, Stuttgart R1, Madrid 3R(WD), Prague100K W. I'm hoping for at least a 4R here. We all know she should do it.

She should get to the third round before she meets Azarenka. Not a great draw since Azarenka is a terrible match-up for her but I'd be satisfied with the third round.

My one suggestion: edit the year.

I'm not really worried about Yakimova or after that Martinez Sanchez; Cibulkova on the other hand in the 3rd round is quite a tough match up although she's not a great clay player she went all the way to the semis in 2009.

Yakimova is a dirtball pusher on her best day. If Lucie lost to her I would probably vomit. But she gets a lot of balls back so Lucie can't be in self-destruct mode. MJMS has been in bad form, but that doesn't mean she can't play well again at any point..she beat Lucie in the Rome 2010 QF so she is dangerous...but she could also lose to Birnerova.

Cibulkova also isn't having her best year, but she has never lost to Lucie so she was one of the 3rd round seeds I hoped Lucie wouldn't get. All in all, the draw is just a bit annoying, particularly because 4th round, even though that would be great, is the absolute best we can hope for because of Azarenka. But if Lucie did make the 4th round I'd be ok with that

First on court 2...dunno if that court has a stream. First match of the slam, always fun

Edinboro
May 26th, 2012, 08:05 PM
Wasn't she the first match in Australia too? I remember her being one of the first ones out. I was hoping Court 2 would have a stream but seeing how she's the only seed to play on that court tomorrow I doubt they will lol.

Easy win, but Yakimova was absolutely awful so nothing much to say about it. Lucie's 2nd serve was crap, needs work.

Robert-KimClijst
May 27th, 2012, 01:22 PM
I'm happy for Lucie to win her first-round match but I do not read much into it. I recall a couple years ago the infamous Hercog match that came after Lucie destroyed Dokic in the first round and we all got excited about her prospects. Martinez-Sanchez will be difficult potentially because even though she has had poor results as of recent she has had some great moments on clay so Lucie needs to be ready.

Davodus
May 27th, 2012, 01:45 PM
She had a long match too so her injury is clearly not too much of a problem now.

Lucie could play her in doubles as well, if they both win.

Lucie really struck gold with Yakimova as a first round opponent, she's been woeful all year. I remember seeing her against Clijsters last year and she was pretty much eye-scratchingly bad considering she isn't an aggressive player :help:. Sounds like a similar story today.

MJMS is a tricky second round prospect but she isn't anywhere near her peak form really after the injury lay-off... so all in all Lucie really should beat her. Just so long as she doesn't have an epic fail in the second round again.

Robert-KimClijst

Maybe it's a blessing in disguise (pending on how Lucie does in singles). If she gets a little deeper in the draw, the extra energy saved could be good.

Edinboro

LOL (Taken from a tennis article on impressive first round wins).

Along the same lines as Ivanovic's impressive victory of Vecino, Czech Republic's Lucie Safarova lost just two games against Belarus' Anastasyia Yakimova.

Winning the first set 6-2, Safarova performed flawlessly in the second set and won 6-0. One of the most awkward stats from this match, though, was Safarova's eight double faults to zero by Yakimova.

Clearly Safarova has to improve this area, but it also displays how well she can play defense and win volleys. Then again, Safarova scored 12 more winners and was more aggressive and successful at the net.

To that end, Safarova does need to polish her serve from those double faults, otherwise it's going to be a disappointing outing in France.

Did he not watch the match? Anyone playing Yakimova would have had the same scoreline.

May 30th, 2012, 11:42 AM
This time wasted 15-40  her game point taking today is just out of this world. She has had 15-20 and took 2.

2-4, and looking worse.

Oh my god she held serve! She wasted 2 game points first though.

Davodus

She broke back for 4-4, and now is chucking in an awful service game to mean it was all a waste

Davodus
May 30th, 2012, 12:02 PM
Well thats the set, 6-4. She only has herself to blame. With all her game points she couldve won it easily, but she kept losing serve from massive leads so...whatever.

Davodus
May 30th, 2012, 12:15 PM
She's gonna get thrashed this set  shes getting worse, she cant serve for shit. I find it interesting, the last few slams her serve has been really bad. Whereas in other events its really effective. She is just spinning it in, no aces, nothing big behind it. Its just a push.

And she's getting frustrated.

Davodus
May 30th, 2012, 12:36 PM
Yeah MJMS is dropshotting her into oblivion. Its like 1 per point almost. Its obnoxious. But Lucie needs to get her in the position that she cant dropshot!

Davodus
May 30th, 2012, 12:42 PM
I'm so sick of this happening in slams, these girls never play just awful against Lucie. And she has her chance, she could so easily get points and make that top 20. But instead she just has one of these days where she plays awful because the rhythm is off, and loses. To a SCRUB. Lets face it, MJMS is a scrub and nothing more. And Lucie keeps losing to these type of people in slams. McHale, Niculescu, Zakopalova, Goerges, Paszek, Hercog. Some of the people who have beaten her in slams in the last 2 years. You cannot expect to have a rankings breakthrough losing to these people.

Davodus
May 30th, 2012, 12:51 PM
She held serve!1 someone call the fucking pope because this some divine intervention. Up 5-4, we'll see if she can pressure.

I know, it's fucking revolting. Her tactics are disgusting.

but Lucie should have anticipated them better, MJMS preparation is quite obvious and she was standing too far back.

Oh well. another disappointing Grand Slam

Davodus
May 30th, 2012, 01:09 PM
GSM. Typical. Actually, before the draw was even made I saw MJMS and I was like I bet Lucie draws her and loses. And I was right. Disgusting tactics win, because Lucie let her play them. She didn't force her back, she didn't take her chances when she had them. She had so many game points, break points, that she didn't take. And she was just passively hitting, and when she had a chance to finally be aggressive she made an error. She keeps having these days in slams! I wouldn't care if she had these days at small events, whatever. But they keep coming in slams and it's just annoying me shitless. She's never gonna be top 20 and she doesnt deserve to be if she keeps playing like this when it matters most.

Rant over.

And sorry for Laura, that she had to sit through this.

A very strange game, mental strength of Maria Jose.

smarties
May 30th, 2012, 01:14 PM
Yep, if she went for her shots, MJMS tactics wouldn't have worked : It's very difficult to dropshot a ball that you hit hard and flat. When she went for her shots, she made a lot of UE so she putted more spin and got dropshotted to death.

Who's Laura???

Davodus

This is just so disappointing. Slam after slam after slam, she fails.

For some reason Lucie is unable to adjust to this kind of unorthodox players. This match remainded me of the one against Nicolescu at US open, all her shotmaking skills just went away, she was looking completely lost and braindead.

Davodus
May 30th, 2012, 01:38 PM
Yep it was just like that, and like Hercog in 2010 too. She just doesn't know what to do, and as a result she just seems to hit the ball in like whatever. She has no clue.

Excelscior
May 30th, 2012, 02:31 PM
Awful match by Lucie.... I was rooting for her.

As many of you have said, the fact that she let Sanchez get away with her numerous, annoying baseline drop shot attempts, every other ball tells you something.

Lucie couldn't go to the net, slice/add her own spin, ROS, serve well or hit deep, well placed or hard enough, to thwart Sanchez's silly, numerous, baseline spin shot attempts.

And the women had ABSOLUTELY no serve. None!

Sad/bad for Lucie.

HowardH
May 30th, 2012, 02:39 PM
Lucie

MJMS is pretty tough to play on clay though, when her game is working. As others have noted, Lucie hates playing unorthodox players, they take her out of her comfort zone. Lucie has a very simple plan when she plays, she doesn't like to have to add any kind of extra strategy to her tennis, which means that her game needs to be "in the zone" for it to work. Either that or she needs Biljana to tell her something when it's going wrong- she probably won't think of the solution herself. In slams though she can't ask Biljana for advice.

Robert-KimClijst
May 30th, 2012, 03:21 PM
Another slam, another ridiculously disappointing result. We can say Jose Sanchez is difficult to play on clay when her game is working, but if Lucie is gonna be in the top 20, she has to beat these opponents at the slams. It's just so disappointing. I feel like at this point she has a mental block at the slams.

And now here comes her worst surface for an extended period of time because of the Olympics. Pffff.

It was soooooooooooooooo painful to watch cause lucie should have won at least the first set, she had game points in almost every games but she couldn't win her service games which is so frustrating considering that she can be so effective on her serve. I didn't even watch the whole first set, i left  Not just because it was shit but because i wanted to watch a bit of arvidsson double match. Then i came back and i sat near Queen Bijlana who was great support for lucie, mladenovic was also her with her family who were also cheering loudly lucie, it was cool to see this. So 2nd set was also horrible to watch, i just wanted to shout "STOP DOING DROPSHOTS FOR F*** SAKE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" but i didn't. Lucie stayed very calm and quiet as always but you could see that it was boiling in her self because of all those dropshots and slice shots. About the effectiveness of her serve, I think the fact that MJMS is a leftie takes away from it but still,I agree, she usually serves way better than this.

It would be nice to see her perform well in a slam. She has one of the worst records in slams of anyone in the top 25. In five years she has one GS QF and one 4R. That's PITIFUL! lol She needs to elevate her game in the slams, all these R1,R2, and R3 (occasionally) exits are driving me mad.
