Who do you think has the best defence on the tour at the moment?

Hardcourts - Radwanska
Clay - no idea, could be Kerber in the future
Grass - doesn't matter, defensive players don't win on it anyway

Whan she's playing -- Clijsters.

Wozniacki on hardcourts. Probably Radwanska everywhere else. Though I'd take a healthy Kim (or a fit Venus on grass) over them both.

Azarenka shouldn't be listed.

Kim Clijsters defensive skills are unreal, when she is playing and fit

Radwanska for being able to retrieve for hours on end without really doing much else. I'd say Kerber's defence is more dynamic in the sense that she can hit some  shots when pulled out wide which makes her look impressive but Radwanska still has better footspeed.

Clijsters easily when on form and fit to compete, even with the bad ankle in Australia she had good defense

Yeah I agree, no one quite like Clijsters in her transition from defense to offense. She's probably the best hard court player of her generation.

Right now it's Kerber, if Clisjters wasn't half-retired then I would say her as well.

Clijsters like 10 years ago. Now I'd say Aga, the footspeed she has gain is unreal, a few years back it was Caro hands down. Although nobody defended like Legend.

Kerber at the moment. Perhaps it used to be Radwanska or Wozniacki, but their defensive skills seem to have decreased in recent months (or at least on clay).

peak Clijsters

Although nobody defended like Legend.

Legend wasn't really a defensive player, she tended to impose her game on opponents, her raw foot speed wasn't nowhere near Clijsters' or Radwanska's.

The best defense is offense, so ... the answer is Peak Pierce.

Lol at people saying Kerber, she's slow. Wozniacki now, JJ at her peak.

Difficult question of those in the poll, Aga's good at getting balls back into court into awkward positions, Caro's consistency, anticipation and "read" on the ball is good, and Kerbers good at turning defence into attack and counterpunching at full stretch.

Not sure why Vika's there.

Not the fastest footspeed but footwork, anticipation, court craft allowed her to defend extremely well....

Who Has The Best Defence? On Clay it seems NO ONE, because we have all main clay titles won by offensive players and they did have only problems playing with similar offensive players , but not defensive.

Azaranka's defense in Madrid vs Serena and in Stuttgart vs Maria = total demolition by big hitters

Healthy Clijsters then healthy Jankovic.

I think its not just about getting the ball back (like Golden Retriever) but going from "defense to offense", ala returning tough shots with enough on the ball to take control of a point (or @ least neutralize the opponent's advantage on it). Peak Serena, Kim, and maybe Venus have been the best @ this in recent years of those I've seen play a lot; Jen was very good @ that too.
