View Full Version : Rick Sanchez on the Williams sisters: "If you get four balls back, they can't play"

The full quote, according to a piece that appeared in SI last week:

"The Williams are like sprinters -- they cannot stand the long rallies, and if you get four balls back, they can't play. When you go from there, they die."

Sanchez (who is coach of Petrova, for those who never heard of him) probably takes a lot of ridicule from Williams fans for this statement, but he's basically telling the truth. Watch Serena play, and what happens to her when she has to hit more than 3 groundstrokes in a rally. Serena's game is built to overwhelm the opponent in the beginning of the point and she generally struggles when the point goes any longer. Of course it's not so easy to "get 4 balls back" against Serena, but its doubtful that she can win RG again unless she starts to be consistently successfull in points where she needs to hit 6,8,or even 10 shots...

Oh please, he is coaching Petrova, another player who canīt stand long rallies.

Of course Roland Garros is the more difficult grand slam for Serena to win (impossible for Venus for many years ago as well), but there is no doubt especially Serena has proven that she can play long exhange rallies against anybody.

Well they haven't done bad so far have they?

Serena has won RG albeit 10 years ago, but she still won it. How did she do that

From watching her matches at Rome this year, I thought she had improved on her rallying.

Correct me if I'm wrong, hasn't Venus has won the most titles on clay apart from Henin?

So they must be doing something right.

Not news...Serena is known to struggle with players who force her to hit more balls..but she eventually does figure them out.

A player who has only reached 2 major SF in her career :tape:

The thing that annoys me more than his words are why the heck are people always lumping Venus and Serena together as the Williams sisters? Sure it's not wrong to call them since they're indeed biological sisters but they're entirely separate entities when it comes to tennis

Wasn't there a thread on this exact quote a couple of weeks ago? Serena got her revenge by surviving SNATCHiNG Petrova at Rome :oh:

Well, first you have to get 4 balls back to the sisters. This would be an achievement on its own. Doing it consistently over the course of the match may lead to a win. Good luck doing it if this is your only strategy.

Put simply, both sisters can rally easily, the reason they don't aim to: most of the time they can overpower their opponents within a few shots, i mean why get into long rallies and waste energy?

Seriously. I am not a huge fan or anything, but this fiction that Williams are just a couple of physical ogresses who ballbash their way to wins should be completely and utterly dead by now.
Both of them have repeatedly proved that their games have a lot of depth and completeness and has stood the test of time a lot better than many of their contemporaries.

In fact other than the fact that they are Sisters and come with a certain "us-against-the-world" emotional baggage, I've never even found their games to be very similar to each other.
