Imagine you were in charge of a Grand Slam and you had total power to decide the 8 wild cards for the main draw....

Taking today's rankings as your basis and presuming there are no protected rankings or absences, which current players ranked outside the top 108 would you give wild cards to?

Would you be fiercely nationalistic and give them to players of your country? Would you give them to top juniors or former top players fallen on hard times? Or would you give a WC to the bagel girls to see how badly they could do? Or a mix of all of the above?

(If you want to be ultra geeky, you can even choose QWCs as well)

If I were the US Open, for example, using today's rankings:

MD:
Anna Chakvetadze (former SF)
Alison Riske
Coco Vandeweghe
Grace Min
Melanie Oudin (to sell out some seats, create some stories)
Lauren Davis
Jelena Dokic (AUS)
Aravane Rezai (FRA)

I'd have Beth play qualies because she needs the match play and it'd be free points for her. Craybas got her WC last year and it was to be her last hoorah but she is still playing. She should play qualifying. She'll get a doubles WC, minimum. I'd be willing to be persuaded to swap Riske out for someone else. Riske has stalled, I can see her going through qualifying.

Alexa Glatch, and then I'd let one of my underlings pick the rest while I went off to smoke cigars and get drunk with the sponsors.

Paula Ormaechea
Garbine Muguruza Blanco
Karolina Pliskova
Camila Giorgi
Sandra Zaniewska
Aleksandra Krunic
Annika Beck
Donna Vekic

Give it to the young players that don't normally have many chances in top main draws.

I like your list.

I am going to pick a team primarily from non-GS countries:

Mine is:

Garbine Muguruza Blanco (one of brightest young players of 2012, a shame she has not yet reached top 100 to get into RG and Wimbledon outright)
Yulia Putintseva (OK, she may be Bratintseva but she is the youngest player in the top 200 and the only 1995 vintage player so I think she deserves a WC)
Annika Beck (she's stormed into the top 200, aged only 18)
Donna Vekic (only 15 and she's almost top 250 thanks to some superb ITF results)
Margarita Gaspariyan (aged 17, 15 consecutive ITF wins and coached by the beautiful Sergey, so what's not to like?)
Saisai Zheng (Chinese teen, storming up towards the top 200)
Anna Chakvetadze (of all the former top players, I think she needs and deserves a WC leg up)
Paula Ormaechea (South America's brightest young talent)

QWC
Bianca Botto (one of these players who is better than her ranking because she does not play that much, a striking ITF win last week)
Maria Teresa Torro-Flor (coming back from injury, her ranking isn't what it could be but she has already been doing really well in ITFs)
Alexandra Kiick (she's been doing really well in ITFs this year and zooming up the rankings)
Anastasija Sevastova (just hitting form but too late to repair a devastated ranking in time for the next two slams)
Irina Khromacheva (now top 250 and still only 17)
Ayu Fani Damayanti (restricted schedule means she is underranked and deserves to make a GS qualies at some point)
Timea Bacsinszky (she needs some matches and points so maybe GS qualies would be a good start)
Carina Witthoeft (promising young German)

I'm a Brit but if I was in a non nationalised Grand Slam, lets say in a country where tennis isn't played, Gabon for example.

1) Alisa Kleybanova - Just the inspiration that she is
2) Jelena Dokic - So vintage but such a talent
3) Anna Chakvetadze - Former top 10, cannot be ignored.
4) Yulia Puntiseva - Brat she may be, but her skill and potential cannot be doubted.
5) Laura Robson - Lefty and still a teen, on her day can push world class players
6) Sesil Karantcheva - Give her chance, drug aided or not, still impressive tennis at RG aged 16
7) Alona Bondarenko - Forever injured but has pedigree and was once near the top.
8) Place reserved for a player coming out of retirement/long lay-off. I'm talking if Hingis woke up and decided to play Wimbledon. Think Clijsters US open.

QWC
1) Agnes Szavay
2) Timea Bacsinszky
3) Taylor Townsend
4) Ashleigh Barty
5) Chalena Scholl
6) Donna Vekic
7) Alexandra Steveson
8) Storm Sanders
