Neither of them was on red clay, but Serena has bigger chance of losing against some random journeywoman than Sharapova. Maria's only chance of winning RG is to avoid Serena along the way = major draw collapse in her favor. She may beat Li, Radwanska and whoever else, but she's not going past Serena

Agreed, Maria probably has a better chance of winning the tournament because she won't lose early and Serena could with an off day. However, if Serena and Maria play, Serena will win.

Serena is a pretty strong favorite, but there are a few others who could win as well, including Maria. She's probably 2nd favorite, but doesn't have that much of an edge on Vika, Sam and Na, all of whom will have to hope they avoid peak Serena. I'd be surprised (but not shocked) if the winner was not one of these 5.

According to Bet365 site odds are:

Serena 3.5
Azarenka 4.5
Ivanovic 5.1
Sharapova 7.0

Obviously Maria. I mean she won the 2 biggest red clay titles leading up to RG. I mean that's the 'real' clay right? She took out the reigning RG champ, the #1 player , Kvitova and Stosur.

Maria's the on-paper favorite, considering she won the two biggest red-clay warm-ups and that Serena hasn't been past the quarters of Roland Garros in nearly a decade. Having said that, we all know what the result will be if Serena plays her best.

The prohibitive favorite is Serena. Except for power, Serena & Sharapova are just about equal. No other players have a will to win more than these two. That's what makes them formidable. Serena disrupts Sharapova more than any other player because Serena can power the ball past an opponent without a lot of separation. Shots that most players would get to, if it wasn't Serena blistering the ball past you, are unable to return shots because of Serena's power.

Serena put pressure on Maria by withdrawing from Rome and letting her win. Now we don't have a clear favourite.

Serena is the favorite until she loses. I honestly don't think Sharapova can beat Serena so if Serena loses before she faces Maria, then Maria is the clear favorite. If Maria is in form, Serena is the only player who can beat her.

But, really, RG is always the toss-up Slam for me. It could unfold that neither Serena nor Sharapova might win, even though they are clearly the two best players in the world right now.

Maria is good at clutching moments, which IMO is the worst strategy the player should have (but she hasn't played the same dominant way she's used to, so whatever is good for a fan like me)

Serena in the other hand is great at being dominant from the start, however, she is not so young anymore, so if her body is ready she will be the one to beat for sure (unless she lets her demons loose but from what I see she's gotten a lot calmer now than ever).

For me, Serena is far better favorite to win RG. She is very smart with shots and now is in a very good form. Maria has played many great matches on red clay and she should have great confidence. However, from the final in Rome, it shows that she is not very confident or good tennis-wise when facing players who used to beat her many times. But due to her fighting spirit she overcomes those flaws.

I can't wait to see the draw :)

They're both about equal but Sharapova slightly edges Serena as Maria has won two of the biggest red clay warmup events so is considered as the traditional favorite. But hey, RG is such an unpredictable slam, just look at the list of winners it has produced for the past decade bar Henin  both ReeRee and Maria can lose to some random nobody or a fellow top player, who knows?

vozas

Sharapova, without a doubt. Undefeated on red clay.

Serena remains not only undefeated on red clay (because she withdrew), she actually OWNS all other colors of clay. I can't see anyone but her winning. Maria did a great job winning Rome and Stuttgart but Serena is gonna win the 2012 French Open

BH both wings
May 22nd, 2012, 09:07 AM
In a Sharapova-Williams final, Williams would be the favourite for sure. But that is not necessarily going to happen. Yes, Williams is undefeated on "clay", but Madrid hardly qualifies as clay -- not because of the colour, but because of the completely different conditions and actually hurt real clay courters more than it helps them. Both Sharapova and Williams could be eliminated even in the earlier rounds with an off day. Williams showed a lot of vulnerability against clearly weaker opponents.

I'd say Sharapova has a little bit higher chance of making the final (despite unpredictable conditions) than Williams, but Williams will probably win the final if she makes it.

Irrelevant, as RG is played on red clay(real clay,) not green, blue, purple or pink. Taking that into account, Serena hasn't been good enough to win a single title on red clay since 2002, while Maria has just emphatically won her umpteenth title on the surface. Maria is the RG frontrunner without a shadow of a doubt, I'm just happy my fave can be healthy and in the draw :awww:

Coconut91
May 22nd, 2012, 10:46 AM
On paper Serena is the favorite, but she's more prone to an early upset than Maria or Vika. It will depend on the draw. If she goes down before meeting Maria, Maria will be the favorite, with Vika right behind her with a great chance as well. Then Stosur, Na and Kvitova, but they are either unstable or have very negative H2H against the big favorites. It won't be easy for them.
