Great fight from both players in these tough conditions. Playing through the rain like there wasn't any and the numerous random collapses out of nowhere made this really dramatic. Maria looked so dejected at 6-4 4-0 I have no idea why Li started messing up. Then Martha started making random errors at 4-1 third set.
Maria has now won two tournaments having saved MP in the space of two months.

I think you should give some credit to Maria, she improved greatly on this surface. Of course there are no real clay goats right now and that's not her fault. You can only beat who is in front of you. Maybe if players like Petrova, Kuznetsova, Jankovic, and other "supposed" clay specialists like Errani, Vinci, or Medina Garrigues actually gave a shit then she wouldn't be winning clay titles.

I just have to repost this:
Not that surprising, it's because Na is a queen ballbasher. She has one thing that makes her stand out which is impeccable footwork, but other than that she is a BBB in the truest sense of the word. Hits the ball one way the entire match with no variation. Whether she's up 6-0 5-0 or down 7-6 6-7 0-4, she does not change a single thing. Everything is on the lines or out. Even when she's playing well you always get the sense that shes hanging on by a thread... It's like if the wind starts blowing at 1mph faster all of her GOAT shots that are painting the lines suddenly become instant UEs, and she makes no effort to take some air off the ball, LordRena forbid she plays some smart tennis and allows her equally errant opponent gift her 2 games to close it out 6-4 6-0. It makes rooting for her a chore.
A horrible player, I hope she loses R1 at RG and falls out of the top 10, where she belongs. As for Maria, sort your serve out girl :o

I swear to God, one of these matches I'm gonna have a heart attack :sobbing: With the rain delay I had the Cincy 2010 feelings all over again :o :tape: Li really should have won this in two. And Maria with two points for 5-1* in the third set, that was another howler. WTA at it's best. But it's 7 for 7 in three-set matches for Maria this year and that stat is the only thing keeping from from breaking down to pieces watching Pova struggles. Once again she elbowed her way through some serious crap and won the damn thing. And if we consider Li was a no-show in Miami earlier this year, it's the first really meaningful win over her since RG 2009. Li is one of Maria's nemesis of late (since she announced herself as Top 10 contender) and I always have second thoughts about their matches.
Just like Stuttgart, Pova saves MP en route to the title. About time to make up for some of the clunkers from the past. I reckon that Cincy final remains the last one where she blew a MP herself and lost the match in the end.
I was flattered to see some of usual Maria haters and WS fans to actually care about this final and hang around through the rain delay. I know Rome was irrelevant to Serena fans once she retired, but I appreciate your interest in the sport. And hopefully you're not THAT mad over the end result :wavey:

When Li was on, she outplayed Maria and that was obvious, then Li choked that epic choke in the 2nd set. Maria was just solid enough to take advantage of Li's drop of form in the rest of the match. Good for her but still not the clear fav to win RG IMO.

The match statistics are pretty funny:

SOMEBODY HOLD ME I CAN'T :hysteric: :hysteric: :hysteric:
Yes, Na choked her ass off in the second set (thank you very much), but the way Maria saved MP at 5-6 in the final set was just :inlove:  (How fucking retarded btw that the one MP Maria saved was in the final set rather than in the second set :spit:) 2-time Rome Champion, 26th title, and second title won this year from MP down :worship:
Na and her fans
And Maria is in no way a favorite for RG. Matches like today just remind me how fucking random her form is.
She's definitely not the overwhelming favorite, but winning the two biggest red clay warm-ups has gotta count for something

A lot of drama, but not quality.
Very very disappoiting match from both players in nearly any standards.

based on 2012 performance the top 3 should now be: vika/masha/rena

At least Vulture won Miami. Gollum is going empty handed this year in slams/Tier 1's

Li Na is def choker of the year...4 match pts against Kim at AO, 1 set and a break against Azarenka in Madrid, and now this. As much as I like her as a player and a person, this is why she only has 5 titles and will always have a hard time winning more. Ugh, just so frustrating watching her matches! She really needs to see a sports psychologist and be less of a head case. When she's on, Li Na is such a good all around player to watch. She should really be a threat to win every tournament that she's entered, but then she self implodes! Ugh
Congrats to Maria for again toughening it out. She wasn't at her best, but I think overall she should feel positive by her form. Def a strong contender at RG.
Wonderwall.

What did I watch? :hysteric:
Hilarious match. :rolls:
Peak WTA  but still unbelievable.
It was incredibly nerve-wracking, amazing turnarounds (chokes).
So intense and so dramatic. The tennis sucked most of the time but what a final nevertheless.
I am so happy for Maria :hearts:
but mainly I feel relief that is over.
Feel bad for Li though, after that AO match this year that was another match hard to get over.
Good luck to both in RG. :yeah:

I hope so ..... otherwise I'll just be left with the memory of this shitfest from two players in the top 10 :help: and it might just put me off of tennis.

Sure but she's not the only one is she? If i was forced to support your fav who is also (still) top 10 i would have quit watching tennis some time ago.
Spot on.
:rolls: at petra fans seething on here...it'd have been better if they would just focus on their fav's well being instead of try jumping on bandwagons of certain players and gloating on the losses of other players who are doing better than their fav this season

Maria  Im not worthy, true Rome-GOAT
Li still has a good chance of defending her title though, if she can reproduce the play for the one and half sets she did during the final, im quite positive

I don't get what their problem is either. Kvitova acquitted herself with a lot of class this tourney, playing through her QF despite injury. They should focus on the positives instead of throwing chairs out the window @ Maria and Na's match today

Even you have to admit that surviving Li Na had much to do with Na's brainless gameplan. Down 0-4, she wouldn't have had an easy time eeking a win out against someone who knows how to keep the ball in play, most of her recent conquerors in big events(Azarenka, Radwanska, Pennetta, etc.) Maria's performance was not one to be happy about, although to her credit she has been much better this clay season.

The European clay tournaments, especially Roland Garros, tend to classify all errors as unforced, so I wouldn't read too much into that statistic.

I Luv Kvitty is truly the worst kind of troll because he combines bandwaggonish asslicking with his obnoxiousness. Now he's slobbering all over Serena, but a few short weeks ago...

Playing Kuznetsova, Henin, Capriati, and Stosur in the QF is alot different than playing Sharapova who Serena pretty much owns.
And, I don't believe the likes of Petkovic and Patty Schynder are QF draws that leave you shaking in your boots.

And? She lost all her matches against Sybille Bammer too, right? I am just saying Patty Schnyder in a FO QF is alot easier than playing Henin twice, Capriati twice, Kuznetsova, and Stosur. And, she had significant leads in all those matches except the one Henin lost.
Sharapova took advantage of her easier QF opponents but couldn't beat the tougher ones. Didn't she have to play Henin and Safina in the QF a few times? There goes my point.
