View Full Version : Most Fragile Top Player of All-Time

Pick the most fragile top female player, mentally or emotionally, of the Open Era.

For me the pick is: Hana Mandlíková.

The poll is for a top player either as a Grand Slam winner, having reached the top or near the top.

Hana was such a talented player, but she never reached #1, though she won 4 slams. She did play in a tough era. But she also never could control her emotions and handle her nerves. Her mental game let down her physical game.

Mary Pierce, until she found Jesus and then, herself.

She is the first who come to mind. I, perhaps have forgot others.

Also, Ana Ivanovic & Gabriela Sabatini, two fantastic players who cried herself to sleep with the burden of being #1.

Novotna and Zvonareva pre-2006 make Ivanovic look like Seles.

wozniacki and jankovic...playing style easily beaten by big hitters and that the reason they didnt reach gs final during their no1 reign

Novotna had the game but not the tennis brain..when it mattered! Sveta just loses her mind during points.

For me, Safina! In fact I don't see how anyone wouldn't have her on such a list. The current poll leader is Zvonareva but she'd erupt and mostly get on with it. Safina would visibly wilt.

Maybe he was taking into consideration that during her peak Safina was one of THE biggest fighters on tour(so many gutsy 3 set wins).....so yes she when the pressure got tough she'd wilt but up until that point she was one heck of a fighter

I agree she was a "fighter." But she was also very fragile. There are different kinds of "fighters" -V.Williams, S. Williams, Sharapova all have that never give-up attitude but S.Williams is the least fragile of the three.

Henin. She couldn't live without Carlos. The faces she made to him during the Wimbledon 07 QF, especially after Serena started saving MPs, say it all. But that was just against Serena.

Safina takes the cake. Novotna redeemed herself, Safina never did.

Safina's mental fragility is overated. She's pretty tough outside slams finals. Her matches vs Maria, Elena and Svetlana in 08 anyone ?

Zvonareva at least did something with her career reaching 2 slam finals.
On the other hand there's Nadezeda... She has a HUGE game when it's on and she has failed to use it and win the big tournaments. Big waste.

French 09 final. DF on match point says it all.

Of all the RG capitulations over recent years, that certainly ranks nowhere near the top. It wasn't even a capitulation. Kuznetsova's top level was just superior to Safina's

Safina just wasn't good enough to win a slam in her era. She achieved plenty.

Kuznetsova did not play that well that day. Safina's inability to play the way she had on other days is another sign of mental fragility, too. She herself spoke during the match, "Why am I such a chicken?"
