I hope this happens! Rome is such a better tournament than Madrid. It's far more worthy of being a PM.

Although I LOVE mixed tournies, if they REALLY want 96 player draws, it might almost be better to have:

1) ATP Madrid/WTA Roma
2) WTA Madrid/ATP Roma

Hm. I think that 64 with no byes would be enough.

I'd prefer the current format. But I don't like the players having to play back-back-back days. The quality of the tennis suffer, especially on clay. Also, if a tournament is going to start early as in Madrid, start early. Get more matches going on Sat/Sun which keeps few matches from bunching up on Monday onward.

The men started on Sunday in Madrid.
Any seeded player with no bye should be asking to play on Sunday as that award you more key recovering time later in the week.

In most of the tournaments, players will play their last four matches back-to-back-to-back-to-back. That's crazy.

96 players it way too much for a single-week event on clay and there's not enough room in the calendar to make it a two-weeks event.

i'd love it to be a 96 draw 2 week tournament like IW/miami and be mandatory, be the warm up for RG.

why would they have Rome 96 and Madrid 64?

Control the wind or all 96 players are gonna be blown directly to Roland Garros.

Madrid also wants to be 96 draw

Its just crazy. There is not enough space in calendar for two 2 week events back to back.
And if they want to keep it a 1 week event its just insane and dumbest thing I´ve heard.

Unless they make the men's and women's events on alternating weeks.

Personally I'm all for it becoming a two week event. I don't think losing or moving Madrid would be a huge compromise, either.

They will never do it! Fit and its president are just idiots and, as a plus, I don't like 2-week events at all.

This would be fine if they can cancel that useless fraud PM Madrid...should also stretch the tournament period of play to 2 weeks from 1

Might be a good idea if Madrid is dumped, which I'm all for ! Madrid is a travesty but Rome deserves a IW/Miami format.

lol yet Miami is a hard court event.:)

The clay was blown by the wind to the players and it really affects them when they play.

Donell you are absolutely right, but I guess this was just an unlucky week, since I've always lived here in Rome and it is definitely not a windy city.

May 20th, 2012, 09:24 PM
If they can do it, it would be great, but I wouldn't sacrifice having ATP+WTA in the same week (or 2) just to have more players.

lol I was in Rome in 2009 X'mas and the 1st night I arrived the wind was literally blowing me up to the sky

I can't sleep at night cuz the pension I stayed was in an old building (I can't even believe how old that building is) and the window was making strange sound the WHOLE NIGHT, just like the scene in those terror movies:sobbing:

The 2nd day I found an excuse and changed the place, even though I had a reservation of 5 nights:lol:

Why was it better before ? Because of the empty stands ? :help:

I don't think they were that empty. I just like the history of this event, the mixed format could work though but it would be tough with a 96 player draw on both sides. I like the idea of swapping Rome for Madrid though.

Rome for 96 draw while Madrid shrink to a 32 draw and a premier

DefyingGravity
May 20th, 2012, 11:38 PM
If Rome wants to be two weeks, fine. Then cut Madrid. Unless they're going to move Stuttgart back a week also and Madrid back a week for Rome.

If it helps Rome become the Premier Mandatory instead of Madrid, I'm all for it. If not, then I think it might be too much tennis right before the French.

In The Zone
May 21st, 2012, 12:13 AM
There's no room in the schedule to make it a two week event. Bigger draws do not mean better quality event. Look at how great Stuttgart was with a 32 draw. Let's keep it 56 with top 8 having byes. Rome clearly outshone Madrid this year - don't fix what's not broken. Just make Rome the mandatory and we will be all good.

96-player draw means that R1 is essentially the last round of qualies. So just start qualies a day earlier.

If either tournament were to become a 96-draw event, it would be Madrid, not Rome. Money talks, and Ion Tiriac has more of it than whoever owns the Rome tournament. Heck, he probably has more money than Italy, period.

Yes but Madrid finals should be on saturday then. And Rome should start on saturday too. With Madrid's finalists hitting the court on Sunday or Monday.

I'd be all for a longer clay season, which is what would be needed to make this work. If they can extend the clay season by about 2 weeks and upgrade Rome that'd be great.

It's easy to make a 2 week event...Just move Fed Cup SF to the week after Wimbledon like we used to have, keep a clay european MM the same week and then you got an extra week before Roland Garros.
