View Full Version : How long until Eurosport stops showing tennis altogether?

No more men's tennis at all for quite some time now. Live WTA is becoming more and more rare. No one watches it so they put it on the Eurosport 2 channel, which you have to pay extra for with most providers. They can't show Wimbledon. They've lost the Roland Garros rights. Love it or hate it Eurosport is still by far the most popular sports channel in Europe. What does it mean for tennis that they'd rather show some kind of local car racing competition than a P5 WTA final?

Who did they lose the rights to? How will you watch RG and Wimbledon?

They've never had international Wimbledon rights.

I don't think it's going to die out. I'm an American so maybe I'm not the best person to say, but I find tennis far more popular in Europe than in US as far as coverage goes. Even though there aren't as good early round coverages, it's still suffice.

Obviously there is football/soccer that usually reigns more supreme, but the fact that more and more WTA tourneys and stars are European makes me think that ES coverage won't die out.

They showed everything last year, now they offer two hours and then put some poofs on bikes on for four hours. Seriously, 120km of guys riding bikes?

It's Eurosport, not Eurotennis  They must show other sports live, not only tennis.

Well they will show RG nonstop on both channels this year so I'm not worried for now.

they lost Roland Garros rights? According to Danish TV, they just bought the rights for doubles because of high demands. And they'll show men's tennis from Queens and one place more I don't remember right now. And for me, ES and ES2 is in the same TV package, so if a match is on one or the other, doesn't bother me. They even aired tennis on both channels simultaniously earlier this week, which I found amazing. Don't remember that happening before except for Grand Slams.

Over the last years it was always good on the women's side.

The only problem is the weekend where they can't show the semifinals and finals live sometimes because Motorsports or other sports are equal important.

On the men's side they show Queens and the Grand Slams.

I think they should show more of the tournaments they show (and the finals LIVE!) but do we really need a live coverage of Brüssel?

That kinda would suck,

In NZ we hardly get any Live Tennis.

The best we hope for weekly is a half an hour snap shot of the ATP Tour.

Any tournaments that do get live coverage on our Cable network are played via Eurosport.

Actually, Eurosport has broadcasting rights for RG until 2014, for Australian and US Open until 2017.

It's Queens + Eastbourne + GS for ATP matches :)

Eurosport is just gonna broadcast RG, since when have they lost the rights?

They have excellent GS coverage, and I watch Wimbledon on the BBC which is even better than ES :p

The Premier Mandatory coverage is bad though.

Eurosport has to look for the balance sheets.
ATP claims too much. WTA we will have to wait and see.

Nobody knows exactly the interdependencies between
the single Eurosport countries and ES1 to ES2.

I think that some events (motorsports) are paying ES
for the coverage.

in Russia Eurosport 1 is a free cable channel , Eurosport 2 is payed as a part of extra package.

Wimbledon rights in Russia are sold to NTV+ , it is commercial satellite channel.... For instance, in 2004 the only match which was broadcasted free was Sharapova- Serena Williams, right for the final were repurchased about an hour before the final

Wimbledon coverage in Russia is awful

Yup - Eurosport are indeed showing RG. So much for ITV claiming they were hosting it 'live and exclusive.'

I hardly ever watch it but I was half-watching the Champions League final and Courier was proclaiming how it was exclusive to ITV in the promotion video. Think I'll be sticking with Eurosport. :p

Go find another sport where they show 28 events a year.
They only really cut on the men's events that they used to show on ES2. In the last 10 years they haven't really shown any men's tennis. They only really cut the Dubai men's tournament in full, right? I don't really remember them showing much more than Doha, Eastbourne and Queen's in recent years besides a random final/semi-final in a MM tournament

I'm sure a lot of events/sports do. Curling did it openly, with a card saying "Sponsored by the World Curling Federation" or something at the end of the broadcasts of that absurd "sport".

ES stopped broadcasting ATP MMs when the ATP came up with the 250-500-1000 points system a few years ago. I believe the rights for all the ATP 500 events are now sold as a single package that ES clearly can't afford. They show Queen's as it's still an ATP 250.

British eurosport is fine. I mean they show mens doha, mens eastbourne and queens, and then the warm up french tournie, and sometimes st petersberg as well.

That might not be a bad thing. As much as I love Eurosport, Sky's ATP coverage is brilliant, always HD with a multi court option - doubles too!

This has been true all season, but I think this can be fixed if Foxtel picked up Eurosport 2

Also in Australia we don't get Men's action on Eurosport but that is shown by ESPN but we don't get the WTA on ESPN.
