Of the 4 universally recognized mug #1s who goes down as the greatest player of the 4. I say Ivanovic due to her combination of a slam win and 3 slam finals.

Great thread!! This is why I love GM.

I was always kind of surprised by Safina and the Woz being no. 1, like it never seemed right. Ivanovic, I'm surprised she hasn't done more, she can have a really good game. Go with her, and not because of the Slam, but just I think has a more solid game than the others.

OTOH, Ivanovic would never have been no. 1 without Justine just quitting out of nowhere. At least the other mugs racked up the points without anyone ahead of them just walking away.

Still have to go with her, though.

Ivanovic is a big dissapointment. She lost herself completely mentally after her maiden slam win and #1 ranking, and lost all momentum and confidence of her career. She is trying to come back now but it is a long road back. Still she achieved more in 13 months than the others did their whole careers which makes it a no brainer for me.

Fail.

Ivanovic is in a league above those slamless number ones.

How is it fail. Even with a slam Ivanovic will still be remembered in the same category as those other three more than she will be in the league of even Mauresmo and Clijsters, probably the next 2 weakest #1s but light years superior players to this quartet. I do agree Ivanovic is the best of the 4, but the gap down to the other 3 is much smaller than the chasm up to Mauresmo and Clijsters, and many #1s up above them.

What about a poll of the worst one-slammers in the open era?

Hmmm that is a good one. O Neill would win by a landslide though so perhaps it is wise to elminate all 1 time Australian Open winners before 1980, and all 1 time slam winners at Roland Garros during the WTT boycott from 1976-1978, so the slightly less muggy winners atleast have a fighting chance in the poll. With everyone included there are alot of good options though, despite that O Neill would probably go unchallenged, except maybe by Barbara Jordan:

O Neill
Jordan
Melville
Durr
Myskina
Majoli
Barker
Ruzica
Jausovec
Na
Schiavone
Stosur
Ivanovic

All will go down in history as "weak" 1 slam winners. The only strong ones in the Open era are Martinez, Sabatini, and Novotna.

Caroline. I like her game. You think she is a retriever but when u really watch her game you can see how talented she really is by getting a lot of balls back.(LOL..SHE KNOWS HOW TO GET BALLS BACK BUT NEEDS TO MOVE FORWARD IN THE COURT MORE) If she works on her game and continues to develop she'll win a slam. Safina was always overrated to me she moves so slow. Ana the same way..never saw anything special in her game. Jelena is she would develop her serve and net game I can see her winning more titles.

1. CAROLINE,I CAN SEE HER GAME IMPROVING. I DONT THINK ANA AND THE REST CAN REALLY ADD ANYTHING TO BE BETTER. JUST MY GUT. TIME WILL TELL..

Safina showcased the highest level of tennis out of the four during their respective peaks IMO, so I vote for her. Ivanovic's BH is too much of a poor shot for me to vote for her.

Ivanovic is clearly #1 of these 4. She has a slam and has been to the same # of finals as Safina - but has a W (over Safina).

Agreed re: Safina's dominance. She was by far the most dominant and spectacular to watch of the 3 (Safina, Wozniacki, Jankovic - slamless #1's) when they were at #1.

Ana Ivanovic. She has had a very disappointing career since than but she still made three slam finals and won a slam. Also Ivanovic is playing the best out of all three that still play. She may not be playing amazing and beating top players but she is not on her way down in the rankings.

Either Ivanovic or Safina. I don't think it's fair on Safina because her career was seriously cut short due to injuries. Ivanovic just had a brain injury, and beat Safina in her 3rd Grand Slam Final while it was Safina's first. Safina had to play former Grand Slam Champions in her next 2 Finals.

Ana played GOATPova in the Australian Open that year, and Justine the year before that in her slam finals.

It's not fair to say that either one was the worst #1. They accomplished more than most people who have won only one slam.

Ivanovic is out of reach of the other 3. The poll should have been only for the latter, in which case I think it would be Safina 1st and Wozniacki last.

For me it is close between Ivanovic and Safina... Ivanovic has the most successful career of course, but Safina, to my subjective eye, was a better and more dominant player at her peak than Ana was at hers - since the question was "best player" not "most successful", I voted for Dinara.

While very accomplished players in their own right, I do not really feel Jankovic or Wozniacki are in the running in this debate.

This poll comes out basically right. Ivanovic >> Safina = Jankovic >> Wozniacki. The only real question is Safina vs Jankovic. None of the other 3 are at Ana's level, and none of the other 3 are down at Wozniacki's level.

I agree Safina is better than Jankovic. I am surprised they are so close in the poll a bit. It must be Jelena getting credit for her play vs the Williams, what do you think?

That would have to be the only difference. Safina did beat Serena and Henin on red clay, though and she defeated Clijsters at Cincinnati - albeit, a just returning Clijsters. Jankovic can compete with them both. But Jankovic plays to the level of her opponents. Even now - look at her. When she loses, it is always deeps in a third set - whether it's Sorana Cirstea, Petra Martic, or Venus Williams (barring Charleston 2012 - LOL).

She is not my favorite and her fans are batshit crazy, but you can't ignore Ivanovic's 3 Slam finals, converting one to the W

Safina is a solid second, 3 Slam finals as well, and it's too bad she couldn't get one of those French Opens

I love Jaja but I think she was in over her head :hysteric:

And the less said about the #1 ranking during the last couple of years, the better.

VIP may have a slam, but ever since then her results have been nothing short of an embarrassment for the tour, and proof that her results from Berlin 07 - RG 08 were the exception, and not the rule.

Safina arguably had the most game of all 4, but not enough to win a slam. She was never a choker, she always just ran into somebody better in the latter stages of slams. Unsurprising that it was the sheer physicalness of her game that meant she could only sustain a career at the top of the game for about a year and a half.

Junkovic will be most remembered for her H2H against V&S, and her wannabe drama queen antics. She mainly hogged her way to the top of the game.

Nobodniacki doesn't deserve to be included in threads like this.

Most of you chose Ivanovic. Although she can claim a GS to her resume, chances are very good that she will never hold up a GS trophy again. Even though Woz never won a GS, she certainly has produced more favorable results than Ana. Plus, Ana is not mentally tough. As far as Caroline is concerned, I'm convinced that her loving relationship with Mcllroy is hurting her tennis play. We all have to make choices, and it seems that Woz is perfectly happy to enjoy both pleasures !

When all at their peak.

1) Ivanovic
2) Jankovic
3) Wozniaki
4) Safina

However I think for sheer consistency Wozniacki has had a better career. Almost a whole year consecutively at number one. OK she whored a lot of points. But you still have to win matches to be a successful whore.

Ivanovic won a weak slam (Karin Knpp was seeded 32) her game isn't that great, and she couldn't cope after winning a slam.

Maybe the other three didn't win a slam but I think if they had it would have made them not broken them like it did Ivanovic.

And who knows there is still time for Woz to win a slam. Her game could return like Zvonareva's did early 2000 success then reappeared in the late 2000's. Maybe in 2/3 years Wozniacki will be a contender again. Actually, she could be a contender later this year and even next weak.

My vote goes to Jelena.

I don't know why Ana is on this poll, she's a slam winner therefore in a different league altogether. Having said that her results outside of that slam win are pretty much on par with these guys, really.

As for the other three, I chose Jelena first simply because she has been much more competitive with the top players of this/these eras, even against her Masters.

Why laud Dinara so much when she completely sucked against the 'best'? You can clobber the rest of the field but when you're faced with the almighty players and let them snatch your wig as easily as if they were facing an ITF journeywoman qualifier in R1 then you lose abit of credibility. I chose to measure by 'games won' as it's more indicative of how competitive individual matches were.

I agree which is why I chose Wozniacki!! Safina had mental breakdowns and a good 6 months. She's toast and gone now. Dont know why shes even mentioned here. Ana is a plan A player who reached her potential. She won a slam..but that doesnt mean she's gonna get faster and quicker. Infact she'll come up against players who have what she has and can move quicker.
Jankovic is hardheaded..to improve. She is like Hingis refuses to work on her serve.

My money is on Caroline..she has this sort of old school game that has much room for improvement. :bounce:

Folks get off Ana's dick. She won 1 slam and that's about it. She has every right to be in this poll. It's not who hasnt won a slam yet but who is the better player. Ana sucks and her results have proved it. Now just cut it out..Ana..sucks! She's gorgeous but her game is sucky. :P

They've all got things going for them. I put Ana at #1 because of: 3 Slam finals, 1 W, some big titles, the #1 ranking - even if she never wins another, her "peak period of play" resulted in the biggest rewards.

Safina has 3 Slam finals, more than JJ and Caro. JJ has the better match wins/record against top players. Caro has more titles, longer time at #1 than either. So it comes down to respecting bigger highs, or a more consistent time at the top.

I'd be tempted to go Ana > JJ > Caro > Safina, but that seems a little weird. I just can't imagine Dinara as "better" historically, or on a day-to-day basis, than the other 3.
